MC seals six shops, razes building
Jalandhar, January 30 The owners of six shops, which were sealed today, had been served notices to make house tax payment almost 15-20 days back, failing which their premises were sealed by the officials under sections 137 and 138 of the MC Act. Assistant commissioner D.P. Bhardwaj revealed that the defaulters were to make a payment of Rs 75,000 individually. While the municipal corporation had issued notices to 60 buildings in the past 15 days, cases pertaining to 10 buildings were taken up today, he said. Since four of the 10 defaulters had paid the money, the remaining, who failed to budge, had to face the wrath of the corporation. The buildings sealed include three godowns in Green Model Town, a godown in Urban Estate, a workshop at Model House and a computer centre in Chandan Nagar. Meanwhile, the town planning section demolished an under-construction commercial complex on Mall Road. municipal town planner Murari Dutt Sharma said the building was coming up on a residential site. While the owner of the building had just completed the construction of the ground floor, the JCB machines pulled down the structure. MC commissioner C.S. DC leads staff in remembering Gandhi
Jalandhar, January 30 Addressing a gathering of employees from various departments of the district, deputy commissioner Ajit Singh Pannu said the nation was grateful to all the martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice to break free of the colonial yoke. “They gave their today for our tomorrow and we should never forget this,” he added. The Father of the Nation too dedicated his life towards freedom struggle and had to remain behind bars for many years. Gandhi emerged as the rallying point for the masses and participated wholeheartedly in all the disobedience movements he started, Pannu said. “In this era of commercialism, we should take a leaf out of the book of the Mahatma who lived simply and espoused the cause of non-violence all his life. Various leaders replicated this philosophy across the world to secure freedom for their countries,” he said. The DC said, “We should take a pledge to come together to rid society of various social evils. It is unfortunate that those evils are yet to banish which were prevalent during the time of Gandhi, notable among them being female foeticide, substance abuse and untouchability,” he added. Nothing could be a better tribute to our heroes than a resolve to do our duties honestly, sincerely and with dedication, he pointed out. Earlier, a contingent of the Punjab police reversed arms as all present stood up and observed a two-minute silence. Others present on the occasion included AC (G) Anupam Kler, SDM Bhupinder Singh, DTO Babita Kler and SP Satinder Singh. |

DIET students block traffic
Jalandhar, January 30 Over 400 students protested against the state government demanding de-recognition of the elementary teachers’ training (ETT) course from the neighbouring states, including those from Jammu. They also demanded that the government should do away with the contractual system of appointment of staff and should regularise it in the state. The members demanded shifting of ETT students from private colleges to DIET institutes in Punjab. They called for bringing transparency in the declaration of results and demanded that the state government should withdraw its decision to privatise government schools. The association members gathered at Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall from where they marched along the GT Road towards PAP Chowk. As the members took nearly half an hour to reach the dharna spot, the traffic moved at a snail’s pace. At the tri-junction, the members stopped traffic on all three sides and raised slogans against the government. Police officials reached the spot and tried to disperse the protesters but the students refused to leave. The officials even snapped the wires of the loudspeakers of the public address system put up there, but the members carried on the protest. The commuters from Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar and Ludhiana had to wait for almost an hour before the traffic could move. |

Anti-Leprosy Day
Hoshiarpur, January 30 This was stated by lepers’ colony president Yado Rao and vice-president Apa Rao Patel while talking to The Tribune. Located on the outskirts of the town on the old Adamwal road, this colony inhabits 35 women, 30 men and eight children. Interestingly, 30 of them are married couples. Constructed by Bollywood producer late Gulshan Rai 30 years ago, the colony has 35 rooms with toilet and water supply facilities. Out of 73 lepers who reside here, only 45 get monthly pension of Rs 250 from the state government. The rest of them have to depend on begging. “The meagre pension that too not regular is insufficient even to buy two meals a day. We know begging is a curse, but we are forced to do it,” said Yado Rao. However, he maintained that some philanthropists did supply cooked meals occasionally, while some donors provide ration. He rued that the lepers were not getting any type of financial aid or grant from the government except free medical treatment and that too at the civil hospitals. “Though a medical officer has been deputed for our medical check up, he visits occasionally,” Yado added. He said earmarking a day for the leprosy is of no use unless the government takes steps to rehabilitate the existing lepers. Demanding a financial aid from the state and the central government, residents of the lepers’ colony said the governments should introduce some schemes to help them earn a livelihood. |

Meal Malice
Nawanshahr, January 30 The rickshaw, loaded with two bags containing 50 kg of sugar and rice, two bags containing 50 kg of panjiri and a tin of dry milk, was ‘seized’ near the residence of CDPO Ravinder Kaur Bhatti on the Barnala road here. The police has taken the grocery items into its custody. Apprehending “theft charge”, Bikker Singh, chowkidar at the CDPO office situated in Heran Jatan Mohalla, who was accompanying the rickshaw, in an affidavit filed with the local police has stated that he had just obeyed the orders of the CDPO who had instructed him to deliver the grocery items at her residence. “But, when I reached her residence, she instructed me to immediately take the grocery items back to the office,” said Bikker. The CDPO, when contacted on the phone, termed the allegations as false and fabricated and said it was a conspiracy against her. She said the grocery items were dispatched for the anganwari centre situated in the town but as the chowkidar could not find the keys of the anganwari centre, he brought the rickshaw to her residence and she asked him to take the
rickshaw back to the office. When her version on the contents of the affidavit submitted by the chowkidar was sought, she said the chowkidar was “intimidated” to file such a statement by the persons conspiring against her. Zila parishad secretary Gurdarshan Kundal said he had asked the local block development and panchayat officer to conduct an inquiry into the whole episode and submit the report within two or three days. |
