Addict hammers wife to death, attempts suicide
Jalandhar, January 21 The couple had got married just five months ago. After killing his wife, accused Gurmukh Singh tried to commit suicide by jumping from the roof of his house. “He sustained injuries in the process and has been admitted to the civil hospital,” said SP (city 1) S.K. Kalia. The accused is said to be a drug-addict and his wife Neelam was against it. On Monday evening, when the couple was having a quarrel over the issue, Gurmukh, in a fit of fury, picked up a hammer and hit his wife. When contacted, SHO of the police station concerned Yogi Raj said a case had been registered under section 302 of the IPC. He said he would be able to tell the exact cause of the incident after recording statements of the family. Meanwhile, the body has been sent to the civil hospital for a post-mortem examination. |

Batala, January 21 According to the information, Soni and his mother Gurmeet Kaur were on their way to fetch medicines when they were waylaid and attacked. The accused, identified as Dewan Singh, Gurmej Singh, Surmej Singh and Bachu, escaped from the spot. Qadian SHO Rajesh Kakkar said the statement of complainant Gurmeet Kaur had been recorded and a case registered under section 302 of the IPC.According to sources, old enmity is said to be the reason behind the attack. The assailants were nursing a grudge against Soni who had been arrested in 2001 for allegedly abducting a sister of one of the accused. However, he was discharged after being found innocent by the court. Meanwhile, the body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination. So far no arrests have been made. Talking to the mediapersons, SHO Kakkar said several police parties had been dispatched to nab the accused.

Kalia said regular search operations were being conducted at the railway stations, bus stand and hotels for the past several months and the search had been intensified recently to nab suspicious persons. Freeze frame: Coldest day of season in city
Jalandhar, January 21 Though for the past 10 days the temperature was above zero degree, the temperature did decreased to -1.8ºC yesterday. Earlier, the coldest day of the season was recorded on December 31, 2007, when the temperature recorded was -3ºC. Defence PRO Naresh Vig said the Adampur meteorology department had forecast a misty and hazy morning on Tuesday and clear, fine weather for the remaining day. It has also predicted cold conditions for another two to three days, he added. Meanwhile, the cold wave in the region has gripped the people forcing them to move out to jackets, caps, mufflers and gloves despite sunny afternoons. Morning walkers witnessed frost on vegetation in parks and lawns, while employees in government and private offices were seen using heaters and convectors to warm themselves. |

Taxman comes knocking at Naatshala’s door
Amritsar, January 21 According to sources, the raiding team, headed by Manjit Singh, ETO, arrived at 6.15 pm in the complex and asked the owner of the Naatshala to deposit 125 per cent tax as the theatre has been making huge profits after the sale of tickets. When the authorities pleaded that the theatre was being run by donations by art lovers and passes were issued free of cost, the ETO said it was not possible to run the theatre on donations.The National Theatre Festival is already going on in the Naatshala in which artistes from India and Pakistan are participating. Punjab Naatshala came into existence with an aim to promote the art of theatre by assimilating art with technology to make it more popular among the masses in the modern world of multimedia. It was constructed by Jatinder Brar, who is a renowned Punjabi theatre personality and has produced many plays. The Naatshala, which is the second-most technically advanced drama theatre in North India and set up with a view to promote Indian culture and heritage, was built with an aim of spreading mass awareness about social evils and dogmas.
