Jalandhar, January 17
District police recovered a revolver and Rs 56 lakh out of the total one crore ransom amount taken by eight criminals to release a city youth Gaga alias Micky after his kidnapping. However the four accused are still at large.

SSP Arpit Shukla said the police recovered Micky’s revolver and Rs 25 lakh from the possession of a ward 26 congress councillor Sukhmeet Singh alias deputy, the kingpin of the kidnapping. Micky’s revolver was also seized from his custody, he added.

Deputy, along with three other accused, had surrendered before the police the previous day, the SSP said, adding Rs 11 lakh were seized from Gurwinder Singh Kind and 10 lakh each from Jasbir Singh and Jatinder Singh Sabhi.

Answering a query, SSP said partial amount of the ransom had been recovered from different places where the accused had kept it. However, despite repeatedly being questioned about it, he refused to name the persons with whom the money had been kept. He merely said this was part of further investigation.

Shukla said action would also be taken against the people who had helped the acccused in any way. Legal action would be taken against all the people whose name figured during the investigation, he added.

Replying to a question, the SSP said the city Honda car used for kidnapping had yet not been recovered. The car belonged to one of the four accused, Prabhjit Singh, reportedly the son of slain police personnel.

Efforts were being made to nab the four absconders, he added.

Hundreds of students led by Sandip Singh, Rajat Sharma, Amit Chopra, Gurpreet Singh and Jasmeet Singh, all presidents of students unions of Government College, DAV College, S. D. College, ITI and Polytechnic college, respectively, staged dharna and blocked traffic at local Prabhat Chowk on Hoshiarpur-Jalandhar road on Thursday for more  than half-an-hour to protest the death of a BA-I student of local DAV College, Suchleen Singh (19) of Kurangna, who died in an accident near his college while alighting from the moving bus.

Earlier, the students assembled at Government College from where they took a procession to the Prabhat Chowk. They were raising slogans against the district administration and general manager, Punjab roadways, Hoshiarpur, for not accepting their demands. After blocking traffic for fifteen minutes, they lifted the blockade for the convenience of the public. But, due to exchange of harsh words with the police, they blocked traffic again.

Later, SDM, Hoshiarpur, Karnail Singh came there and received a memorandum from them, only then they lifted the blockade and normal traffic was resumed.

In the memorandum, they demanded arrangement of government bus service from schools/colleges and other educational institutions to the bus stand, permission for bus pass holders to travel in private buses also, issuance of instructions to bus drivers and conductors to stop their vehicles on all the bus stops, arrangement of compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the deceased, filling up of all the vacant posts by discontinuing privatisation/contractorship system in all the government offices and rolling back of the hike made in fees of school and colleges.

All the union leaders warned the administration that their agitation would be intensified if their demands are not accepted.

12 days after, no headway in KMV murders

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 17
Even after twelve days of the sensational murder of KMV College principal Rita Bawa along with three other persons, the district police failed to make any headway.

Admitting this, SSP Arpit Shukla said four teams headed by two SPs and two DSPs had been trying their level best to solve the mystery behind the blind murders committed right before midnight on January five.

Answering a query, Shukla said the police was working on every possible theory but had failed to get any specific lead so far.

Shukla said the police had also taken the help of an RBI team to ascertain the source of huge amount of Rs 37 lakhs found near the principal’s body. The money which was found in a briefcase lying near the Bawa’s body on the floor of her bed-room had raised suspicion.

The SSP said her two confidants, including cook Kishore Mandal and her security guard Shamsheedin, had been working with her for over 12 years but unfortunately they were also stabbed to death.

Their deaths also made the work of the police more difficult to solve the blind murder, he said, expressing hope the hard efforts of the four teams would bring results in the near future.

The police suspected, from the gathered evidences that contract killers from outside Punjab had been hired to commit murders and at least one person who came with the killers, was very well known to Bawa.

Police sources further said no entry in the register at the college gate was made as the principal might have directed the security guard at the gate to let the visitors come without making any entry.

The recovery of Rs 37 lakh found near her body indicated that the motive of the killers was not robbery.
