‘Killer’ schoolboy was remorseless
Gurgaon, December 12 Anita Solanki, vice-principal of the upscale Euro International School in this suburb of the national capital New Delhi, recalled with a shudder how two class VIII students pumped bullet after bullet into their classmate Abhishek Tyagi who allegedly bullied them mercilessly. She said she was sitting in her office just a couple of rooms away from the site of the shooting when two students ran screaming that a schoolboy had opened fire on Abhishek who was lying in a pool of blood. “I first ignored it but after seeing their pale faces I ran to the staircase,” Solanki said, as the entire country reeled with shock at the coldly planned killing that was more reminiscent of a US school shootout. She reached to see Abhishek on the floor and the killer schoolboy standing close. “When I questioned him what had happened, he felt no fear of his gruesome act and nonchalantly replied, ‘I killed him’,” she added. He offered a reason too, saying that Abhishek often bullied him and had even threatened to kill him and his friend; so they took revenge. The sequence of events is still hazy, but it appears that five bullets were fired from the .32 bore gun. First, one pumped four bullets into Abhishek; he then passed the gun on to his friend who finished the job and fired a fifth bullet. At the end, Abhishek lay sprawled in the ground with two bullet wounds in his chest and one in the forehead. While Solanki and the staff rushed Abhishek to a nearby hospital, the killer schoolboys whose identities are now being withheld here because they are juveniles, were caught. Teachers caught the first schoolboy and locked him in a classroom. The second boy, who had already left the class and was sitting in the bus, was also subsequently nabbed and the police and school chairperson Satyavir Yadav informed. The school had just got over and most children were already in buses ready to go home. Fourteen-year-old Abhishek, too, was on his way out and had climbed down the stairs to the ground floor when he was attacked. The day after, the clues to what may have led to the horrific attack lay scattered around in the three-floored eerily silent school that is closed for two days. On a ground floor classroom lay an unclaimed bag belonging to the first boy who shot Abhishek. It was stuffed with books and had messages like “bad boy” and “ziddi (stubborn) boy” scrawled in blue ball pen ink. But the school authorities had obviously not woken up to the “bad boy” and what he intended to do, despite taking other precautions. According to Solanki, Abhishek was on his way to a classroom for compulsory attendance to ensure that all children board the right bus. But the killer boys did not go for their attendance and waited near the staircase to lay siege knowing very well that other children might be in the bus. The only silver lining in the dark clouds of violence - that nobody else got hurt. “When the duo opened fire, nearly 10-15 students ran helter-skelter to save their lives. Thank god, a bigger tragedy was averted,” said school chairperson Satyavir Yadav. The police said the conspiracy had been hatched four days ago. The first boy stole his father’s licensed revolver and smuggled it to the school after hiding it in his socks. He then went to the first floor toilet and hid it near a window, taking it out just minutes before the incident. The boys have been sent to 14 days judicial custody to a juvenile home in Sonepat district in Haryana. The school is planning to deploy more security guards. And the silence of death has fallen upon Abhishek’s home. — IANS |
All three shared ‘deep friendship’
Gurgaon, December 12 This accident happened very suddenly, the girl told a news channel. Recounting the incident, another boy, younger than the three, said he came to know about the incident when his friend asked him to get off from the swing and follow him. After that I could not sleep at night and also caught cold, the boy said. Yet another student said Abhishek was very gentle and his behaviour was good with every child. School principal Mamata Sharma said the school did not shirk responsibility in the matter but alleged that parents of the accused children acted in an irresponsible manner. “Parents should be extra careful. A child does not have that maturity to understand that weapons are dangerous,” she added.

Demand for fresh BPL survey gathers steam
Jind, December 12 The protesters have appealed to the state government to conduct a fresh survey. Panchayats of at least five villages in the district met the district authorities and the Jan Sangharsh Morcha held a demonstration here today. Expressing dissatisfaction over the new list, residents of Badanpur, Morkhi, Pindara, Nandgarh and Alewa villages gathered at the mini-secretariat and alleged large-scale irregularities in the survey work. They also submitted a memorandum to the SDM, Jind, which was addressed to the Chief Minister of Haryana. Allegations have been made that ineligible families have been included in the list in connivance with influential people of villages while many deserving families have been left out. Many families, which were earlier in the BPL list, have not been included in the new list. A resident of Morkhi village said the survey was incomprehensive, adding that this had been a common problem in nearly every village in the district due to lack of proper monitoring. Activists of the Haryana Balmiki Mahasabha, a Dalit organisation, held a meeting at Nehru Park and voiced its concern over the issue. It asked the government to adopt a fair and transparent method to identify the real beneficiaries. SONEPAT: Residents of the district on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner and sub-divisional magistrates alleging bias and irregularities in the preparation of the BPL list. The allegations of the families are being supported by representatives of the panchayat. So far, people from Badwasni, Baroda, Fazilpur, Parahladpur, Jafarabad, Bhatgaon and many other villages have approached the administration for the redressal of their grievances. The Sarpanch Association of the Gohana development block has expressed dissatisfaction over the new list of BPL families and submitted a memorandum to Gohana SDM Jagdeep Kumar demanding a fresh survey. DC D.P.S. Nagal said there was a month’s time for appeal and interested families could fill new forms. “After verification, the eligible families will definitely be included in the BPL list,” he said, adding that information in this regard had already been given to panchayats. KARNAL: Zile Ram Sharma, a senior leader of the Haryana Janhit Congress (BL) party, here on Wednesday said the removal of the names of people from the below poverty line (BPL) list was a planned move of the state government so that it would not have to distribute the recently announced 100 square yard plots among the poor. The HJC (BL) would demonstrate against this move of the government on December 28 and submit a memorandum to Karnal DC B.S. Malik. “The present government is anti-poor and anti-Dalits. It makes various announcements but nothing concrete is being done on the ground,” Sharma said. |

Dist party units within fortnight, says Bishnoi
Chandigarh, December 12 Building on party cadres is now going to occupy centre-stage. “Post-rally, our entire focus will be on constituting the district units of our party. This will be the second big move following the overwhelming response of the public at the rally. We will build up the cadre polling boothwise and the district units will be in place within the next fortnight,” he says. In the city to submit a memorandum to Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai here today, Bishnoi said the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government had committed excesses by cane-charging his supporters, including sitting MLA Rakesh Kamboj, and mediapersons at Karnal prior to the rally. “We have demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident, immediate suspension of the DC and the SP, Karnal, a CBI inquiry against Chief Minister Hooda for amassing wealth and imposition of President’s rule due to the complete failure of the law and order situation,” he stated, speaking to TNS. Re-emphasising his commitment to promoting work over seniority, he maintained that he wanted each of his workers to lead by example. With Bhajan Lal’s legacy with him, Bishnoi says he was a “viable alternative” to the Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) because the public was looking at a leader with a clean image and vision. “We have nearly 63 per cent voters in the 18-35 age group who want a dynamic leadership in the state. I fit the bill absolutely,” he maintained. While his hands are full with organising the rank and file of the HJC (BL), the “public and its concerns” remain of paramount importance. “When our party comes to power, we will introduce a pension of Rs 300 for one woman in every household among the lower strata. Then, we are keen on bringing legislation which will make it mandatory for the private sector setting up units in Haryana to reserve jobs for those with state domicile. |

After taking a serious note of allegations regarding the attempt to protect him, the Judge on October 15 had asked the SIT head to file his affidavit specifying the details of Yadav’s family and his relations, along with the immovable property acquired by them with effect from January 1, 2005, till September 31, 2007. The Judge had further asked for details of the statement of accounts, along with the income tax returns of Yadav, his family and relatives for financial year 2003-04 onwards. As the matter came up for hearing today, Justice Kant observed: “There is hardly any explanation for not complying with the order dated October 15. In these circumstances, and as a last opportunity, it is directed that the desired information be collected and placed on record before the next date of hearing.” A petition in the matter was earlier filed by Sita Devi of Gurgaon district. She had contended that her husband, his brothers and sisters were owners of prime 60-65 acres in Narungpur village, which was a part of newly developed urban estate of Gurgaon. Two brothers and one sister of the complaint’s husband were deaf and dumb. After going through her petition, the Judge had previously observed: “Prima facie, from the facts which have clearly emerged, it is apparent that there are two sets of persons, who are indicatively involved in misappropriating prime and valuable land, co-owned by the husband of the petitioner and his physically disabled brothers and sisters through various dubious means...” |
