Guwahati, November 5
Mahi’s men performed a clinical job to beat Pakistan comfortably by five wickets with three overs to spare to take 1-0 lead in the five-match Indian Oil Cup One-Day International series at Nehru Stadium here today.

Robin Uthappa cut a Shoaib Akhtar delivery to the third man fence in the last ball of the 47th over to sent the capacity crowd on their feet over the Indian victory.

Man of the Match Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who promoted himself in the batting order ahead of Yuvraj Singh, batted sensibly to build up a match-winning partnership of 105 runs with his deputy to set the stage for the Indian victory in style and comfort. Both the batsmen hit a half-century each.

Both Dhoni and Yuvraj kept their natural aggression in check to keep rotating the strike so that runs are scored sans taking any risk on a difficult wicket which was earlier well exploited by Indian spinners Harbhajan Singh and Murali Kartik.

Sachin Tendulkar though performed brilliantly with the bowl by picking two wickets, failed to live up the expectations to his huge fan following here with the bat. The Rawalpindi Express made short work of the little master who was out leg before wicket scoring only four with the team’s score reading 14 in 2.5 overs.

The Prince of Kolkata, Saurav Ganguly then teamed up with Gautam Gambhir to steady the Indian innings. The due together put 82 more runs before Ganguly was ran out at the individual score of 39. Gambhir played an inning of caution and aggression before he was bowled round the legs by an Afridi googly at 44.

Fall of Gambhir brought Dhoni and Yuvraj together in the middle to weave the Indian victory with elan. Yuvraj was out while trying to hit an Abdur Rehman delivery out of ground. He was caught in the deep by Afridi. The Indian vice-captain compiled 58 runs with six fours and one six.

Next to go was Dhoni on being caught by keeper Kamran Akmal while trying to chase a Shoaib Akhtar delivery outside the off stump. Dhoni scored 63 runs in 77 balls hitting eight fours.

Robin Uthappa (11) and Irfan Pathan (5) remained not out as India romped home by by five wickets.

Earlier, Mohammad Yousuf struck a timely half century to help Pakistan bounce back from sluggish middle overs and notch up a competitive total on a two-paced wicket.

Yousuf remained unbeaten on 83 off 88 balls and was involved in two 50-plus stands with Shahid Afridi (31 off 32 balls) and Misbah-ul Haq (27 off 26 balls) for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively as Pakistan posted 239 for seven wickets.

Electing to bat, the Pakistan team started off well as openers Salman Butt (50) and Akmal (12) put on 44-run partnership taking advantage of wayward bowling by Zaheer Khan in initial overs.

Butt was on song from the start during his 57-ball knock, executing several delightful wristy strokes that elicited got spontaneous applause from the sporting capacity crowd sell-out crowd at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium .

Zaheer Khan, who strayed in line and length initially, was at the receiving end of Butt’s belligerence.

The first wicket fell in the 11th over when Akmal (12) became the victim of a questionable decision.

The run rate slowed down as the Indian pacers got into the rhythm and bowled intelligently not allowing the Pakistani batsmen much room. The visitors found the going tougher when host skipper Dhoni introduced spin by introducing Harbhajan Singh in the 18th over.

The over saw Butt completing his well-deserved half century (56b, 8x4) with a couple to deep cover, but the 23-year-old Pakistani departed off the very next ball following a terrible mix-up with vice-captain Younis Khan. Butt edged to extra cover and set off for a single only to be sent back by Younis. Yuvraj Singh displayed silver-quick reflexes by picking up the ball in a flash and threw it to Dhoni who did the rest.

Murali Kartik was brought on in the next over, and he immediately started getting sharp turns and used the spin-friendly conditions intelligently to keep the Pakistani batsmen under check. Kartik was unlucky not to get a wicket when Sourav Ganguly dropped Mohammad Yousuf with the batsman on 9 and the Pakistani total on 94/2.

Not a single boundary was hit between the 14th and the 34th over. Finally, Afridi ended the jinx by lifting Zaheer Khan over long off for the first six of the innings in the 35th over. He and Yousuf then gradually turned things around with a 59-run partnership of 54 balls.

Afridi charged down the track and tried to send Sachin Tendulkar over the ropes, but the bowler kept the delivery wide, the batsman missed the line and the Indian skipper did the rest.

Joining Yousuf after skipper Shoaib Malik (2) got out in the 41st over, Misbah rose to the occasion with some fine slog hits that helped improve the run rate.

Bowlers did spadework: Dhoni

Guwahati, November 5
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni patted the bowlers for doing the spadework that laid the foundation for the hosts' five-wicket victory today.

India scored a facile win against Pakistan in the series opener here. Dhoni said the bowlers had put Pakistani batsmen under lot of pressure in the match.

"Whenever you play against Pakistan, you need a good start and our bowlers exploited the conditions well. They bowled well and most importantly they bowled according to the field," Dhoni, who was also adjudged Man of the Match, said.

The winning captain had special word of praise for spin twins Harbhajan Singh and Murali Kartik who were impressive today.

"Well, they have been doing it consistently. In the last series (against Australia) also, they did really well. Their performance has contributed to the team's success," Dhoni said.

Harbhajan conceded just 29 runs in his 10 tidy overs, also scalping the important wicket of Pakistan vice captain Younis Khan.

Though left-arm spinner Kartik, whose figure read 10-0-36-0, went wicketless he was unrelenting and difficult to score against.

Dhoni also singled out Yuvraj Singh for praise after sharing a 105-run partnership with the left hander who struck 58.

"Yuvi is a tremendous player. We needed a left-right combination in middle and that's why I promoted myself up.

"The pitch was doing a bit for spinners. We ran well and knew that once we settle there, we can score as many runs as we want. We knew that even if we don't get runs for even five overs, we will get those later on," Dhoni said.

His Pakistani counterpart Shoaib Malik rued the dropped chances and insisted that 239 was a defendable score.

"It was a defendable score on this surface but we dropped too many catches. Also, they got a good start and that made all the difference today," he said.

Malik said notwithstanding the defeat early in the series, players' morale was not down.

"We are struggling a bit in fielding. But we have learnt a lot from this game. There are still four games to go and team spirit is okay. Players are working hard," Malik said. — PTI

A well-deserved win for India
Zaheer Abbas

Zaheer AbbasIn the end, it was the discipline of the Indian batsmen that spelt the difference between them and Pakistan in the first one-day international at Guwahati today.

Needing to chase 240, India may have lost Sachin Tendulkar early, but the calm manner in which the top and middle order went about their job ensured that Pakistan were slowly, but firmly shut out of the match.

On winning the toss, Shoaib Malik did the right thing by opting to bat, but Pakistan were undone by their inability to put together any significant partnership. It was largely the efforts of Mohammad Yousuf - who has been in supreme form in recent months - that Pakistan were even able to reach 239, a total that was at least 30 to 40 runs less than what they should have put on the board.

After an early loss of Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket, Sourav Ganguly and Gautam Gambhir did well to build the foundation for what turned out to be an easy, but well deserved win for India.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh then took the game away from Pakistan by keeping it straight. It was this 105-run partnership for the fourth wicket that really sealed Pakistan's fate.

Malik said after the match that they had learnt a lot from the match and I hope he will be talking to his batsmen on the need to keep their cool and build partnerships. That is the only way they are going to beat this Indian side that is high on confidence.

Not to mention the number of quality batsmen in their ranks, the very fact that Rahul Dravid was not even missed today sends out an ominous message for Pakistan.

Today, India were the better team in almost every department. In the morning, they kept the pressure on the Pakistan batsmen almost all the way with the spinners making good use of the conditions. Not helping matters was the way set batsmen like Salman Butt and the skipper himself got themselves out.

It was Yousuf once again who came to the team's rescue and he must be congratulated on the way he played. Also helping India's cause today was the inability of the Pakistan captain to put any sort of pressure on the batsmen in the afternoon.

The pitch may have had the odd ball that bounced awkwardly, but Malik gave the Indians too much of room to play themselves in.

After Shoaib Akhtar got the prized cap of Tendulkar, Malik should have kept the pressure on. A couple of overs from Shoaib and Umar Gul before the new batsmen had settled in could have yielded better results for Pakistan.

Taking Shoaib and Gul off the attack was a defensive strategy. And once Pakistan went on the back foot, there was no way back for them, even though India lost a couple of late wickets. By then, the match was all but sealed.

There is plenty for Malik and his boys to learn from this game ahead of the next and very important encounter at Mohali because if India goes on to win Mohali also Pakistan would have probably lost the script. I only hope they have learnt their lessons from this match. — (News Watch Asia)

Mohali ODI: Tax exemption opposed
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 5
Entertainment tax should not be exempted for the one day international cricket match between India and Pakistan to be played at Mohali on November 8. This was stated here today by several sport organisations.

Former minister and life president of the Punjab Olympic Association, Umrao Singh, former member of the Indian Olympic Association, P.S. Kumedan, president of the Punjab Shooting Association, Gurbir Singh Sandhu, office-bearer of Volleyball Association, Raj Kumar, Rowing Association, Prabhjit Singh, and others have urged finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal to direct the authorities concerned to charge entertainment tax on the tickets sold by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA).

Umrao Singh has also spoken to Manpreet Singh Badal in this regard telling him that cricket is not an amateur sport but a professional one in which revenue of several hundred crores of rupees was involved.

Exempting it from entertainment tax would be against all prevailing rules and regulations of the state. He said the money collected as tax should be put in a common pool to develop other sport in the state.

Kumedan said the PCA had developed the art of roping in heavy politicians to get several benefits from the state. Earlier, it got concessions in form of tax exemption from the Amarinder Singh government. Now it was trying to get close to politicians who call the shots in the present Punjab government.

Sandhu said the PCA should be asked to return Rs 40 lakh which it had taken on loan from a state sports organisation in 1989. He said that there was record of the money being taken on loan by one senior functionary of the PCA.

Muralitharan hurled with ‘chucker’ taunts

Melbourne, November 5
Even before Sri Lanka's cricket series against Australia gets underway later this week, spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan has encountered first sledging remarks from local fans and passers-by on the streets of Adelaide.

"Some people have just asked for autographs and have been nice, but there have been one or two people who have shouted 'chucker' in the street and during the game in Adelaide," he said.

"They are just younger guys, and I don't really pay much attention to it," he was quoted as saying by the 'Sydney Morning Herald".

Muralitharan, however, said he was satisfied with the preventive measures taken by the Cricket Australia for the two-Test series and was hopeful that it would be devoid of the unpleasantness of the past years.

"I don't care if people say things to me during games, but it is a problem if they are throwing things. I met some of their (CA's) security people and I am happy with what they told me. Hopefully, it will be a good series," he added. — PTI

‘Post-India, Australians not invincible’

Melbourne, November 5
Their recent losses to India seems to have dented Australian cricketers' confidence as middle order batsman Michael Clarke has made it clear to the home crowd that the new-look team was not invincible and fans should not have "unrealistic" expectations from the young Test side.

Clarke, who last week declared his ambition to be Australia's next Test captain, said the team's defeats during the recent one-day series in India and the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa were an indication that it was unrealistic to expect the side to dominate world cricket as it did in the previous decade when Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Damien Martyn were a part of the set up.

"I think the Australian public has taken the Australian cricket team's form for granted because we have had so many great players and they have performed so good for 10-15 years," Clarke said.

"I think it is unrealistic now and I think that has shown recently. We didn't win the Twenty20 World Cup. We only won 4-2 in the Indian one-dayers and that was a tough series," he was quoted as saying by the 'Courier Mail'.

"I hope we win every game we play, but the reality is it can't happen."

Australia has not been beaten in a home Test series since its 1992-1993 loss to the West Indies, and it has lifted the past three World Cups, remaining undefeated in the past two editions.

The side won a world-record 16 Tests in a row between 1999 and 2001, and captain Ricky Ponting and his predecessor Steve Waugh have the highest winning percentage of any Australia skipper who has played more than 10 Tests.

Clarke predicted the baptism of fire would start against Sri Lanka and India this summer.

"We have two very strong teams coming here and we have to give credit to other sides in the world who are playing very good cricket," Clarke said.

"I believe it's going to be very different this summer to past summers. It's going to be very tough. But I'm really looking forward to the new generation of youth coming through." — PTI

Jyoti finishes tied 9th, Jeev tied 25th

Sotogrande (Spain), November 5
Jyoti Randhawa settled for the tied ninth place with a final round of three-over 74, while Jeev Milkha Singh's one year rein as the Volvo Masters champion came to an end with the Indian finishing tied 25 in the elite tournament.

After rounds of 73 and 70, Randhawa looked primed for a top five finish but once he reached the halfway stage at the Club de Golf Valderrama, thing did not go his way and he carded back-to-back 74s to total seven-over 291 to share the ninth spot with Thomas Bjorn and pocket euro 84,800.

Jeev was less impressive and he finished the way he had begun, with a round of five-over 76. He tallied 16-over 300 to get richer by euro 38,800.

Randhawa had an average round which had three bogeys, two birdies and a double bogey as well. Randhawa's putting was not up to the mark and he needed 31 putts - his highest this week - that included couple of three putts. — PTI

New Delhi, November 5
Former champions Mahindra United will take on Churchill Brothers in the final of the 120th Durand Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Wednesday.

The final will be a repeat of 2001 when Mahindra United had triumphed over Churchill Brothers in the latter's only title clash in the Durand Cup.

In the semifinals played here tonight, Churchill Brothers edged past Air India 3-2 while Mahindra United got the better of Salgaocar 4-2 via tie-breaker.

The Mahindra-Salgaocar match produced no goal during the regulation time and 30 minutes of extra time play. And in the tie-breaker, Salgaocar's hopes suffered a numbing blow when their captain Rocus Gomes blazed over, making the job of Mahindra United custodian and India player Sandeep Nandi that much easier.

And Mahindra were ensured victory when Salgaocar's Shylo Malswamtlunga "emulated" his captain by shooting over.

Yusuf Yakubu, Harpreet Singh, Douhou Sey Djidja Pierre and Sunil Kumar were bang on target for Mahindra United while only Felix Chimaokwu and Joe Rodrigues could find the target for Salgaocar.

Though Mahindra United held the edge during regulation play and extra time, their forwards could not convert their chances, thanks largely due to the fine goal-keeping by Marcus Basumatari of Salgaocar. Salgaocar, champions in 1999 and 2003, mostly played second fiddle, and the quick fuse of some of their players almost created volatile situations in the middle.

Mahindra United, who were champions in 1998 and 2001 and runners-up in 1990 and 2000, thus moved up for the second time in the tournament through the tie-breaker route. They won over Sporting Club de Goa via tie-breaker to enter the semifinal.

Earlier, in the first semifinal between Churchill Brothers and Air India, some exciting action was witnessed with Churchil twice bouncing back to neutralise Air India's lead to create a 2-2 deadlock at half time and slotting in the match-winner midway through the second session.

Air India forged ahead in the seventh minute when off a free kick taken by Nirmal Chetri, Narendra Meetei took possesion and drove home. Ten minutes later, Churchill equalised through Gourimangi Singh. Air India regained the lead through Santosh Koli, following a free kick, in the 27th minute, while Mboyo Iyomi drew parity for Churchill in the 34th minute.

Thereafter, both the teams went into a defensive, slow mode till captain Odafe Onyeka Okolic found the mark in the 31st minute on resumption. Defender Raju and medio Mboyo Iyomi fashioned the move before putting Odafe through, who sidestepped defender Uttam Singh, drew out the custodian to cleanly place the ball to give Churchill victory.

Dravid leads Karnataka reply

Rahul DravidMumbai, November 5
Rahul Dravid rediscovered his batting form with a typically solid and unbeaten knock of 77 to help Karnataka reply strongly in the second innings after the visitors conceded a big lead to holders Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy Elite Division Group A tie today.

Dravid, who occupied the crease in his well-established manner for 209 minutes and faced 178 balls, struck ten fours and two successive sixes off his first innings conqueror Ramesh Powar as Karnataka made 195 for one, after trailing Mumbai by 142 runs in the first innings.

Dravid had made 40 in Karnataka's meagre first innings tally of 195.

In the morning, the home team, overnight 302 for seven, lost their remaining three wickets for the addition of 35 runs and were all out for 337.

At stumps, the visitors were 53 runs ahead with a day left in the four-day tie at the Wankhede Stadium.

Dravid, omitted from the Indian one-day team for the first two ties against Pakistan, put on 126 runs for the unbroken second wicket with opener K.B. Pawan who dropped anchor to remain unconquered on 76 in 302 minutes with seven fours and a six. — PTI

Kaul puts Punjab on top
Ashok Sethi

Amritsar, November 5
The hosts Punjab were in commanding position at 372 for nine with 38 runs ahead of the visitors at stumps on the third day of the four-day Ranji Trophy cricket match against Andhra Pradesh today.

Uday Kaul hit 144 runs and was involved in 183-run partnership with skipper Pankaj Dharmani for the fourth wicket, who missed his ton by 6 runs.

Determined fightback by the overnight unbeaten batsmen Uday Kaul (79) and Pankaj (63) carried the innings forward by keeping their cool. Both the players bore the brunt of the new ball by Andhra Pradesh taken after 85 overs.

Showing great concentration, Pankaj guided his young partner Uday. Both consolidated the innings with some classy on drives and thwarted the rival bowlers.

Just before lunch, Pankaj went for a drive against off-spinner Mohd Faiq and was trapped leg before wicket at 94. He achieved his personal milestone and emerged the highest scorer in Ranji Trophy from Punjab, overhauling Vikram Rathore’ record of 6494 runs. His tally of scores stands now at 6497 runs in 90 Ranji trophy matches.

Uday and Ankur Kakar were then involved in 59-run partnership. At stoke of tea, Uday’s marathon innings of 144 came to an end through an excellent run out by B. Sumanth. Uday occupied the crease for 8 hours and 45 minutes scoring 16 fours facing 384 balls. This was his second century for the team.

At close, Punjab were 38 runs ahead with one wicket in hands.
