India, Pak renew rivalry today

Guwahati, November 4
Pakistan renew their cricketing rivalry against arch-rivals India with a five-match one-day series here tomorrow with two young captains leading a highly talented but unpredictable teams.

The political turmoil back home would no doubt weigh heavily on Pakistan players' mind as they go into the first one-dayer seeking to take an early advantage in the battle of nerves and skills.

The series will also be a test of character for the captains Mahendra Singh Dhoni of India and Shoaib Malik of Pakistan, who have shown a remarkable composure but any contest involving the traditional foes is bound to put that extra bit of pressure.

Besides, Malik will also have to manage without their pace spearhead Mohammad Asif, who pulled out of the one-day series owing to his elbow injury, and the experience of former captain Inzamam-ul Haq, who recently retired from the international cricket.

India would also be without their senior batsman Rahul Dravid, their batting main stay so far who has been dropped for the first two matches of the series.

With the talks of 'phasing out process' in the Indian cricket, other two ageing warhorses Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly would also be under pressure as the hosts would rely on their strong opening partnerships.

The seasoned Virender Sehwag would also be keen to regain his old magic, particularly as his inclusion in the team in place of former skipper Dravid triggered a lot of a debate.

Sehwag, who boasts of a 300 plus score against the Pakistanis, would look for a success with his bat against the attack which includes speedster Shoaib Akhtar returning to the team after a long gap.

There is lot of interest in cricketing circles about who comes out in the number three batting slot, with skipper Dhoni himself expressing his willingness to bat at that position sometime back, and the followers of the game would be waiting with baited breath to see the mystery unravel.

Dhoni, who shot into the limelight with a scintillating hundred against Pakistan at Visakhapatnam, has always had a good record against the neighbours, and the sell out crowd at the stadium would be looking forward to another cracker of an innings from the talismanic Ranchi-based cricketer.

India would be keen to wipe off the disappointment of its series defeat against Australia, Pakistan would be licking the wounds of their narrow loss against South Africans and would look to comeback hard at the hosts.

But the series opener at the 23,000 capacity Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, where India have won three and lost three one-dayers so far, puts Pakistan on unfamiliar terrain as this is their maiden visit to this part of the country.

For the records, Ganguly is close to a personal landmark in bowling, as he is only one wicket away from claiming his 100th victim in one-dayers.

Rookie Praveen Kumar has been one of the most consistent bowling all rounders in the Indian domestic tournaments over the last few years, but it remains to be seen whether the selectors opt for a rookie like him in the pressure game.

The tourists have a formidable batting line up, with the likes of Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Yousuf and Misbah-ul Haq capable of pulverising any opposition on their day.

Salman Butt, who has always relished playing the Indians than any other team, and vice captain Younis Khan are also vital cogs in the visitors' scheme of things.

Teams (from): India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt), Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Robin Uthappa, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, Praveen Kumar, Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, Harbhajan Singh and Murali Kartik.

Pakistan: Shoaib Malik (capt), Younis Khan, Salman Butt, Imran Nazir, Yasir Hameed, Mohammad Yousuf, Shahid Afridi, Misbah-ul Haq, Fawad Alam, Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Akhtar, Umar Gul, Sohail Tanvir, Abdul Rehman and Rao Iftikhar.

Umpires: Ian Gould (England) and Amish Saheba.

Tough choice between Sehwag, Gambhir: Dhoni

Guwahati, November 4
It will be a toss up between the Delhi duo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir when Team India picks the final XI for the first cricket one-dayer against Pakistan here tomorrow, said captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Gambhir has been in good form in recent past, while Sehwag also enjoys an impressive record against Pakistan and Dhoni said it would be a tough call when the final eleven is named tomorrow.

"Sehwag is batting well at the nets. He is middling the ball and is in good nick. He is fielding well too.

"Gambhir is also batting well and it will be a tough choice between him and Sehwag," Dhoni said today.

Dhoni felt both the sides were evenly matched and whoever handles the situation well would have the last laugh.

"The Pakistan team has a lot of players who can both bat and bowl. It is similar to India. The team which exploits the conditions better tomorrow will win."

Dhoni parried queries on the imposition of emergency in Pakistan and said, "I am not the right person to answer the question."

Asked whether the Pakistani players would be under pressure due to the turmoil back home, he said, "It's up to them but I hope they are mentally tough."

Though he looked confident about the side's batting and bowling departments, Dhoni admitted there was ample rooms for improvement in fielding and running between the wickets, which have been India's perennial problems.

Though the sides squared up in the Twenty20 World Cup, Dhoni would be leading India for the first time in a one-day series against Pakistan even though he did not see anything special in it.

"I have played a lot of matches and captaining against any team is the same," he said.

Asked about the playing XI, Dhoni said the line-up would be decided tomorrow. — PTI

‘Pak attack strong enough’

New Delhi, November 4
Undaunted by the presence of heavyweights like Sachin Tendulkar in the Indian line-up, Pakistani seamer Sohail Tanveer said his side's bowling attack was good enough to rattle the hosts even without spearhead Mohammad Asif in the ODI cricket series starting tomorrow.

"If you have faith in your abilities then you can achieve anything, no matter how tough the opposition. I cannot afford to be intimidated by big names like Sachin (Tendulkar) and Sourav (Ganguly) and allow their presence to affect my performance," Tanveer, who is on his maiden trip to India and will face the veteran Indians for the first time, told reporters here in a media interaction.

"Definitely we will miss Asif but even without him, I think our bowling is strong enough to trouble any line-up in the world. We have a nice combination of seamers and quickies," he added.

Tanveer, however, admitted that taking wickets on the sub-continental tracks is one of the toughest assignments for a bowler but felt Pakistani bowlers were more likely to do well here, having grown up playing on such pitches back home.

"It is difficult to bowl on the tracks in sub-continent but since we have also played our domestic cricket on such pitches, we are well-prepared for the task," he explained.

Enjoying his first trip to India, the 22-year-old said he was looking forward to the challenge of taking on Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men in their own backyard after the thrilling matches the two sides played in the Twenty20 World Championship.

"There is lot of excitement whenever we play India because of the involvement of the fans. Besides I have always wanted to come to India so cricket has fulfilled that wish of mine. I hope to have good time both on and off the field," Tanveer said.

The left-armer, whose wrong-footed action became a talking point during the Twenty20 World Cup, said even he was amazed as to how strange he appeared while bowling.

"Honestly, I have not developed this action. It is natural. And even I was taken aback a bit when I first saw myself on TV but I never intended to make my action look strange," he grinned.

Excited about opening the attack with Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar, Tanveer said the comeback-pacer would be Pakistan's trump card in the series.

"Shoaib showed that he is in very good form when he took those four wickets against South Africa in the last ODI. He will definitely be a key player for us," he said.

On the Indian attack, Tanveer said the hosts' current bowling line-up was perhaps one of the best in recent times.

"India have a very good bowling line-up. I don't think I have seen a better Indian attack than this. Earlier there used to be one strong bowler but others were mediocre but the current three-four bowlers are all very good," he said. — PTI

India have edge on Pakistan
Zaheer Abbas

Zaheer AbbasIn all the years Pakistan and India have met on the cricket field, no series has been without its own, unique pressure and the one that starts tomorrow at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati promises to be no different.

All the five matches in the one-day international series as well as the three Test matches promise to be closely fought, simply because that has been the nature of every India-Pakistan series, excluding a few aberrations. Having said that, I would tip India to start as the favourite for a number of very good reasons.

For one, even though India will be without the services of a class player like Rahul Dravid, there is a great sense of balance about this Indian side. In Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, India have two cricketers who have, literally, seen it all and understand very well what it is like to cope with the pressures of playing Pakistan, even if it is at home. Backing them up are a number of very talented batsmen led by Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag and the captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

In contrast, the Pakistan batting bears a brittle look. Let us not forget that the ODI format is one that favours the batsmen, and in this sense, I feel that Pakistan are lacking. Other than Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan, this team does not really have the sort of depth our squads of the past used to have in the batting department.

These two are the only ones that Shoaib Malik can really rely on to deliver the goods. Shahid Afridi is a good player but unfortunately he is not very adept at applying his mind and playing according to the situation, which to me is a very important factor.

In the bowling department, Pakistan will definitely miss Mohammad Asif. Despite the fact that he was not able to bowl at full pace in the series against South Africa at home, he would have been a key man for his captain but because of his elbow problem, he has had to stay back at least for the first three matches of the ODI series.

Umar Gul, Rao Ifthekar and Sohail Tanveer will thus have to shoulder the burden of the attack against an Indian team that is both confident and has won its last two matches against a top team like Australia.

Inversely, this will also put immense pressure on Shoaib Akhtar. He has only played one full match since his comeback from suspension and even though he did take four wickets in the deciding game of the ODI series against the Proteas at Lahore, I would say Shoaib still needs some more time before he proves that he is back to full fitness. Let us just say, wait and see how he goes.

For their part, the Indian bowlers look a lot more settled. They have played a lot of cricket of late and have a number of options both with the new ball as well as in the spin department.

In particular, I am impressed with the way Irfan Pathan has made a comeback to the national side and with the work he has been doing since then.

India though, will certainly miss the experience of Dravid at the top of the order. He has been a stalwart for them and did very well to lead India to a series win in England at a time that made it seem highly impossible.

At the same time, I would say that India now have a number of very good young players whose time of reckoning has arrived, even if in a tough series against Pakistan.

Overall, I would say that while the matches will be well-contested, India hold the edge. As I said earlier, there is a definite sense of balance around this team brought about by the presence of men like Tendulkar and Ganguly that will help the younger men. A lot also depends on the sort of wickets that have been prepared at the five ODI venues because that could, in a crucial manner, nullify the advantage Pakistan have in the form of their bowling options. — (News Watch Asia)

London, November 4
William Gallas scored an injury-time equaliser for Arsenal to draw 2-2 with Manchester United yesterday and stay unbeaten in the English Premier League.

Gallas’ shot crossed the line before it was pushed out by Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, with the linesman awarding the goal.

“The referee interrupted the game and I thought he had given a free kick against us for offside, so I had a surprise because the ball was in,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 83rd minute to give Man United a 2-1 lead. Gallas had scored an own goal in first-half injury time before Arsenal levelled through Cesc Fabregas in the 48th.

Arsenal stay on top on goals scored with 27 points - the same as United - but the Gunners have played one game less.

Tottenham drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough in the first league match in charge for Spurs manager Juande Ramos, Chelsea beat Wigan 2-0 and Liverpool struggled up front in a 0-0 draw at Blackburn.

With City idle, Chelsea moved into third with 24 points, followed by Portsmouth and Blackburn and City with 22 and Liverpool with 21.

Manchester United led 1-0 when striker Wayne Rooney received a cross from Wes Brown and his shot from close range was deflected in off Gallas’ right arm.

Gallas had his team’s best chance in the first half, a header which was saved by the legs of Van der Sar in the 36th.

Fabregas scored his 11th goal in 16 games to make it 1-1.

Emmanuel Adebayor had a shot saved by Van der Sar and Bacary Sagna crossed the loose ball for Fabregas to side-foot inside the corner.

Fabregas’ 58th-minute free kick was saved by Van der Sar, while Rooney headed wide in the 64th.

Frank Lampard put Chelsea ahead in the 11th minute and Juliano Belletti made it 2-0 in the 18th, capping off a solo run with a goal.

Chelsea’s seventh win in a row brought their goal tally to 12 goals in its last three games.

Ramos didn’t get much time to enjoy his first win at Spurs on Wednesday, a 2-0 victory over lower-league Blackpool in the League Cup.

Darren Bent gave Spurs the lead against Middlesbrough in the 35th minute with a low drive into the bottom corner.

Defender Luke Young levelled in the 52nd minute with a long-range goal into the top corner.

Spurs have eight points from 12 games, with Middlesbrough one point ahead.

Portsmouth was three goals up at Newcastle inside 11 minutes. Noe Pamarot scored in the eighth with a long-range shot, with Benjani Mwaruwari adding his eighth Premier League goal of the season a minute later. John Utaka made it 3-0 in the 11th.

Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell scored an own-goal in the 16th minute. Portsmouth goalkeeper David James blocked a shot from Newcastle midfielder Charles N’Zogbia and a follow-up strike from Michael Owen went in off Campbell.

Niko Kranjcar finished off Portsmouth’s 4-1 rout in the 71st minute to help the club to their first win at Newcastle in 58 years.

Everton scored two goals in injury time to complete a 3-1 win over Birmingham. Ayegbeni Yakubu had put Everton ahead in the 10th, and Olivier Kapo levelled for Birmingham in the 80th.

Carsley scored with a long-range shot and then headed to James Vaughan who scored Everton’s third. — AP

Durand Cup
Salgaocar shock JCT 2-1

New Delhi, November 4
Salgaocar Sports Club put it across fancied JCT 2-1 to set up a semifinal encounter with Mahindra United in the Osian’s Durand Cup football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here today.

Anil Kumar (seventh minute) and Shylo Malswamtlunga (31st) found the net for the Goan team, while international Sunil Chettri (45+) reduced the margin for the team from Punjab.

Despite their best efforts, Sukhwinder Singh’s boys could not get the equaliser in the second half.

Mahindra needed a penalty shootout to prevail over Sporting Clube de Goa 5-3 after the teams were locked goal-less in 120 minutes of play.

NP Pradeep, Manjit Singh, Harpreet Singh, Mohammad Rafi and Ghanaian Yusuf Yakubu were successful for Mahindra. Kenyan Bonface Ambani, Micky Fernandes and Bibiano Fernandes scored for Sporting, with Samananda Singh missing the second of those attempts.

Tomorrow’s semifinals are both Mumbai vs Goa affairs as Churchill Brothers take on Air India and Mahindra face Salgaocar.

The result would be a boost for Savio Medeira’s Salgaocar, who have regained their spot in the top division of the national league for the coming season.

JCT did most of the attacking but Salgaocar reaped rewards for capitalising on their chances.

They took an early lead when Anil Kumar tapped home a cut back from Nigerian Felix Chimaokwu. JCT goalkeeper Karanjit Singh had left his goal to stop the pass, resulting in Anil having an open goal in front of him.

The setback spurred JCT on and Baljit Saini came close when he hit the post from inside the box.

But they were caught on the break when a through ball from Jerose Oliveira found an unguarded Malswamtlunga inside the penalty area and his shot went in off the upright.

JCT, five-time winners of the third oldest football competition in the world, were desperate for a goal before the break and Chettri answered the call with a successful header off a cross from the right wing from Saini.

But try as they might, the second did not come their way as Salgaocar largely concentrated on defending their lead.

JCT did not help their cause either by going for long-range shots which did not bother keeper Marcus Basumatari.

Their Brazilian striker Eduardo da Silva Escobar, who scored four in the previous round against Assam Rifles, was a major disappointment.

Sporting Clube de Goa had the woodwork to blame as Samananda Singh’s penalty kick came off the crossbar, with all other efforts in the tie-breaker being on target. The result was a repeat of the one in the quarterfinals of the Federation Cup which also was decided in a similar fashion.

As is their strategy, Mahindra brought on substitute keeper Subhashish Roychowdhury for the tie-breaker and the move paid dividends. This had worked during the Federation Cup in Ludhiana with Roychowdhury getting his team over the line against the same team as well as Dempo Sports Club. — PTI

Armaan races to victory

New Delhi, November 4
Indian racing sensation Armaan Ebrahim put up a superlative performance to win the Formula Renault V6 Asia race in Zuhai, China.

Starting third on the grid for the 20-lap Grand race, the 18-year-old shot into the lead on the first corner and never looked back from there.

Armaan opened up a three-second lead by the fourth lap, which extended to six seconds by the 10th lap. He passed the chequered flag with more than six seconds to spare.

The official practice went well for Armaan as he was quickest in the first session and second fastest in the final session.

In qualifying, Armaan clocked the fastest time in the first session. However, in the second qualifying session, he could not find the same grip level with new tyres and finally finished fourth with Japan’s H Yoshimoto qualifying on pole.

“The Grand race was very important for me to do well as I was very keen on matching the pace of the very experienced Yoshimoto. I got a great start and made it to the lead with keeping my complete focus on lap time consistency. I pushed initially and then maintained a steady pace to record a comfortable win,” Armaan said after the win. — PTI

Queensland humble Sri Lanka

Brisbane, November 4
Sri Lanka’s preparations for this week’s first Test against Australia suffered a blow today when they lost by four wickets to Queensland at the Allan Border Field.

Chasing 142 for victory, Queensland reached the target for the loss of six wickets to bring an end to dismal few days for the tourists ahead of the first Test in Brisbane starting on Thursday.

Clinton Perren was 62 not out at the close, with man-of-the-match Ashley Noffke unbeaten on 21.

Queensland had earlier bowled Sri Lanka out for 226 in their second innings and appeared to be cruising to victory when they went to tea at 36-1.

But while the Sri Lankan batsmen failed to come to terms with the grassy wicket, the pace bowlers kept them in the match.

Farveez Maharoof (3-33) took the only wicket before tea when he dismissed opener Jimmy Maher for 12 with the score on 35.

Michael Kasprowicz (3-29) and Noffke (3-21) set up the exciting finish, each taking three wickets to bowl the tourists out for 226 in their second innings, despite a feisty 84 from Chaminda Vaas.

Russell Crowe to buy franchise in IPL

Melbourne, November 4
Hollywood star Russell Crowe is all set to own a team in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Twenty20 extravaganza planned by BCCI and backed by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

According to 'Sun-Herald', the Academy Award winner -- cousin of former New Zealand captains Jeff and Martin Crowe -- and businessman Peter Holmes a Court, who jointly own the South Sydney Rugby League Club, are about to make this unusual business foray by buying a franchise in the IPL.

"If the football club decides this is something they want to get involved with, then the Souths name could be spread," Holmes a Court was quoted as saying.

Rabbitohs, as the club is better known, has already entered a global partnership with English soccer club Leeds United and the sides are scheduled to play a trial match in Florida next year.

Crowe, who won the best actor's Oscar in 2001 for his starring role in "Gladiator" and went on to act in movies like "A Beautiful Mind" and "Cinderella Man", is a sport-loving guy who supports Leeds and roots for Michigan Wolverines football team.

Meanwhile, former New South Wales cricketer Neil Maxwell, who is well versed with this new competition, hailed Crowe's move and said, "Having Australian business involvement in an IPL franchise would be tactically a good move by the IPL.

“Within 20 years I see the IPL staging its own one-day games and playing in different parts of the world, whether its Hong Kong, Dubai or even the United States or China."

Already a handful of Australian cricketers have signed up for the IPL and the list includes Ricky Ponting, Mike Hussey, Andrew Symonds and Brett Lee, apart from the retired duo of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne. — PTI

Kapur finishes tied 8th
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, November 4
Three bogeys on the return nine saw Shiv Kapur finish tied eighth and pocket $89,000 as Angel Cabrera of Argentina won the $4 million Barclays Singapore Open title fending off a spirited Vijay Singh by one stroke on the par-71 Serapong greens of the Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore today.

Kapur started well, playing a par game on the front nine. But the return nine saw him conceding three bogeys in a row on the 12th, 13th and 14th for a three-over par 74 and a final two-over par score of 286.

Gurbaaz Mann played his worst game on the last day to finish tied 46th for a prize money of $20,800. Gurbaaz started badly playing a double bogey on the very first hole. He birdied the second but conceded a hat-trick of bogeys on the third, fourth and fifth to be four-over-par 40 on the first nine. His bad luck continued on the return nine as he lost strokes on the 14th and 16th for a six-over card of 77 and an overall aggregate of 12-over-par 296.

SSP Chowrasia tied 23rd with an eight-over-par 292 and pocketed $40,800, Gaurav Ghei was tied 46th with Gurbaaz Mann, and Arjun Singh finished tied 68th for a prize of $10,200.

Vijay Singh, who started the day six off the lead, mounted a brave title charge with a new course record 67 but came up just short at the end against US Open champion Cabrera.

Vijay reduced Cabrera’s overnight four-shot lead by half at the turn, thanks to an outward 32 which included an eagle and three birdies. The lead became one when the big Argentinean bogeyed the 10th.

Cabrera kept his nose ahead after both players bogeyed the 13th and Vijay, playing in the group ahead of the overnight leader, tied the Argentinian with a birdie on the last after missing a 20-foot eagle attempt.

But after smashing another monster drive down the par-five 18th fairway, Cabrera easily hit the green in two with a six iron and two putts later, he had his hands on the coveted Barclays Singapore Open trophy.
