Won't let Murali surpass Warne: Ponting
Melbourne, October 25 The task of taking nine wickets to surpass the record of Warne's 708 wickets does not seem too hard for the wily bowler in next month's two-Test series but Ponting says he is determined not to let it happen in Australia. "He needs nine wickets to pass Warney's world record and I want to make it pretty clear that it would be nice if he left Australia not getting those nine wickets," Ponting was quoted as saying by 'The Australian'. "If that's the case, then we've done a pretty good job. He's also made it pretty clear over the years that he feels Australian batsmen play him better than any other team in the world. In saying that, and in our conditions, hopefully we can keep him under wraps," he added. Ponting also played down apprehensions that there would be crowd trouble when Muralitharan plays his first Test on Australian soil after 12 years. The Aussie skipper said he was confident that spectators would behave themselves even if Muralitharan overtakes local hero Warne. Win target, not world record: Lanka Sydney: Sri Lanka vice-captain Kumar Sangakkara believes off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan will be fired up to pass Shane Warne's Test wicket-taking world record in Australia but said a successful tour is the top priority. "It means a lot to everyone in Sri Lanka that Murali is going to Australia and trying to break the record there," Sangakkara wrote in his column on a cricket website. "He's going to be as excited as a schoolboy. But Murali also realises that his getting those nine wickets is only part of this tour. The bigger picture is to beat Australia. Everything else is related to that." Lankan officials to meet CA Melbourne: Fearing a hostile reception for off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan at the Australian grounds, Sri Lankan team officials will tomorrow meet Cricket Australia (CA) to take stock of the arrangements being made for crowd management. Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss said though the matter would be up for discussion in a meeting tomorrow but Muralitharan remains unaffected by it. "There is a meeting on Friday with Cricket Australia, and I'm sure it will all come up then. The Australian crowds will probably try to put him off his game, but he has heard all that before," Bayliss was quoted as saying by the 'Age'. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene said his team would not resort to any "silly" extremes while dealing with Australia's on-field aggression.

Challenger Series
Ahmedabad, October 25 India Red lost wickets at crucial junctures. Joginder Sharma took three wickets while leg spinner Amit Mishra took two wickets for India Blue. Man of the match Suresh Raina helped his side overcome a poor start, when they were reduced to 41 for 4 in swinging conditions. Powered by a brilliant knock of 92 by middle-order batsman Raina, India Blue set up a respectable total of 246 runs in 50 overs. Raina’s enterprising knock of 92 runs, which was studded with seven boundaries and two towering sixes, helped India Blue score 246 runs in 49.3 overs. Raina was well supported by lower middle-order batsmen Niraj Patel, Joginder Sharma, Amit Mishra (who remained not out), and Romesh Powar, who contributed 35, 27, 29 and 21 runs, respectively. Earlier, India Blue captain Virendra Sehwag won the toss and elected to bat. But, the openers and higher middle-order batsmen failed the team and India Blue were 41 for the loss of four wickets at one stage. India Blue received the first jolt on the very first ball when opener A. M. Rahane was clean bowled by Praveen Kumar for nought. Even Sehwag, who is aspiring to return to the national side, returned back on an individual contribution of just nine runs and the team’s total on 23. For India Red, Praveen was the most successful bowler, taking four wickets for just 42 runs in his 10 overs. S. K. Trivedi claimed three wickets for 52 runs in his 10 overs. — UNI Scoreboard India Blue: AM Rahane b Kumar 0 Sehwag c Badrinath b Kumar 9 Asnodkar c I Sharma b Trivedi 19 Karthik lbw b Kumar 0 S Raina c Kohli b Trivedi 92 NK Patel c Kaif b Ojha 35 Joginder c Kumar b Trivedi 27 A Mishra not out 29 Powar lbw b Kumar 21 V Mahesh lbw b Mundhe 1 RR Bose b Sharma 3 Extras (lb 1, w 7, nb 2) 10 Total

Dhoni: We should play aggressive cricket
Ranchi, October 25 Dhoni said, “Individual performance does not matter and the entire credit goes to Team India for the victory in the World Cup.” To a query about pacer Sreesanth's aggressive behaviour on the field, Dhoni, without naming anybody, said it was quite natural that people would comment on it but the team would not give in to such “tactical pressure” and not give up its instinctive playing. Speaking about the role of senior players in the team, Dhoni said every player was well aware of his responsibilities and presence of senior players “lessens the pressure”.

BCCI admits excessive cricket causing burn-out
Kanpur, October 25 BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said although burn-out was an issue with cricketers of all countries, the board did not want the Indian players to be exhausted before important matches and was taking steps for the same. "That is why we have increased our pool of players to 35 from 20 and introduced an additional category 'D' after A, B and C. With the new category, there will be an option for players if they are injured or need to be rested," Shukla said. "We are trying to have options for all kind of players in the new pool," he told mediapersons after inspecting the Green Park stadium which will host the India-Pakistan match on November 11. Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had recently told Australian mediapersons that his team might be "tired and exhausted" due to excessive cricket before its tour Down Under later this year.

Woolmer ingested poison: pathologist
Kingston, October 25 Ere Sheshiah, whose original finding in March that Woolmer was strangled launched a far-reaching murder inquiry and sparked feverish speculation that it was related to corruption in international cricket, said he stuck by his findings. "In my opinion, Woolmer died from asphyxia due to manual strangulation associated with cypermethrin poisoning," said Sheshiah, who said the chemical is used widely in many countries where cotton is grown such as Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Woolmer died on March 18 when he was found unconscious in his Jamaican hotel room the day after Pakistan were embarrassed by Ireland in a cricket World Cup upset. Sheshiah said that cypermethrin can cause symptoms including "salivation, vomiting, diarrhoea and muscular incoordination," which may have accounted for the scene of disarray that medical personnel found at Woolmer's room. Sheshiah, whose procedures in the post-mortem have been criticised by three other pathologists asked to review the case, said the police pressed him to offer the conclusion in the case before he received the results of the toxicology report. The three other pathologists, South African Lorna Martin, Britain's Nathaniel Cay and Canadian Michale Pollanen, have all testified that Woolmer appeared to have died of natural causes, probably related to heart disease. Sheshiah, 65, was expected to testify further today in the inquest presided over by coroner Patrick Murphy and 11 jurors.

Lee defends Indian crowd’s behaviour
Melbourne, October 25 “Personally, I actually like the controlled aggression. We know that through world cricket, we have a line in the sand that we can’t overstep. If you overstep that line, well then you get penalised for it. It’s all about passion. It’s all about playing for your country,” Lee said. Indians might have locked horns with all rounder Andrew Symonds in the series of confrontations, but Lee said the on-field verbal duels were in right spirit. “The way that India have come back and fought really hard and gave a bit of a mental barrage, and also a bit of a verbal barrage, they have been saying it in a right way. It hasn’t been a problem,” he was quoted as saying by The Age. Australia won the series 4-2, but the tournament was marred by racial abuse and monkey taunts hurled at Symonds by the Indian crowd. But Lee said Indian crowd simply loved their cricket and a few isolated incidents had generated misleading headlines. “Without being too controversial, you have got to realise that there are two or three persons in the crowd out of 90 to 100,000 people. I mean if you do the odds, the crowd was so well-behaved. It’s the same here in Australia. The crowds here are brilliant and I am sure they are looking forward to some great cricket,” he said. Former Test player Darren Lehmann also backed Australian crowd. “I think our crowd will be really well-behaved. They will applaud good cricket and back their team as they always do. Our crowd have been pretty vocal but that’s no different to anywhere else you go around the world.”

J-K Ranji selections raise eyebrows
Srinagar, October 25 While Services discard Sarabjit is not eligible for selection as per the JKCA rules, Dev, who has represented Jammu and Kashmir at various levels, also cannot appear for the state this season as he has not played club cricket last year, sources in the JKCA said here today. Several JKCA working committee members are unhappy with the way the one-man selection committee picked players by "flouting rules." The JKCA management had earlier requested the BCCI to appoint a selector and the Board deputed Sanjay Sharma for this purpose. "How can anyone, irrespective of his cricketing credentials, select a state team by seeing performance of the players in the nets just for two hours? That is exactly how the team was selected this year," the sources alleged. "According to the constitution of the JKCA, the working committee should elect a four-member selection committee every year to pick the state teams," the sources said, adding the procedure was not followed this year. They also alleged that some prominent batsmen, who had scored significantly in club matches last season, were not included in the state team. Sources said Kanwaljeet Singh, who had a reasonably successful stint at the English county this season, has been excluded from the 18-member squad. Another batsman, who scored five centuries last season, from a valley-based cricket club, was not considered for selection, they said. "How can you ignore such talented players and draft in those who are not even eligible to play for the state?," they added. They are also unhappy that of the 18 players selected to play for the state, only six hail from the Kashmir valley. Top JKCA officials were not available for comments. — PTI |

WWF contests postponed; upset wrestler gets violent
Ludhiana, October 25 The much publicised wrestling events, organised by Universal Wrestling Stars, for which 15 wrestlers including four women were in the city today, were postponed indefinitely. Organisers, who were unwilling to furnish details, forwarded a small note stating that the wrestling events that were to be held on October 26, 27 and 28 at Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala were postponed due to technical problems. Mediapersons, who waited for almost an hour for the wrestlers to arrive, were shocked in disbelief when Nikita, a Russian wrestler, soon after coming to the venue started abusing Indians, took off his coat and shirt and threw a table on the mediapersons. "You ugly Indians! You cheaters. I want to kill somebody," the wrestler roared. Despite pleadings by others, he went on and challenged those present to fight with him. It was only after the police force in heavy numbers arrived on the venue that the conference resumed. After he was pacified by other wrestlers, Nikita was sent to his room. Apologising on behalf of the wrestler, Tiger Jit Singh, the Indian wrestler, said, "They had been preparing for over three months for this event for over six hours daily. Just five minutes ago, they learnt about the cancellation which has upset them and me too. I apologise on their behalf." |
