SC to examine ordinance on colonies

New Delhi, October 8
The Supreme Court Monday decided to examine the central government’s ordinance granting 15,000 unauthorised colonies in New Delhi immunity from demolition and other punitive measures till the end of the next year.

A bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat issued notices to the union urban development ministry, the Delhi government, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and others, and asked them to reply by November 1.

The bench, which also included Justices C.K. Thakkar and L.S. Panta, was hearing a petition by the Delhi Pradesh Citizens’ Council, which challenged the legality of the September 15 ordinance.

The petitioner said the government issued the ordinance to negate the apex court’s August 27 order. By that order the apex court asked the government to stop commercial activities in the residential complexes within three weeks and put the unauthorised colonies on a par with other authorised colonies in the capital.

The ordinance also granted immunity from demolition and other punitive measures to the buildings in unauthorised colonies, like Sainik Farms and various slum clusters.

The bench passed its August 27 order following an unprecedented courtroom drama, which witnessed Justice Pasayat pitted in an unsavoury row with central government counsel Vikas Singh on the question of the court’s power to order closure of the commercial activities in the unauthorised colonies without hearing the four million affected people. — IANS

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Delhi Pradesh president Harsh Vardhan held the Chief Minister and the transport minister responsible for yesterday’s Blueline accident. The BJP has further demanded their dismissal and registration of charges of criminal negligence against them.

Harsh Vardhan has alleged that in the leadership of the Chief Minister, the transport ministry has become totally corrupt and is beyond the control of the court or the government itself. The party has demanded immediate arrangements of alternative transport system in the Capital.

“A policy should be framed where adequate system has been provided to give sufficient compensation to the people, who die in road accidents,” said Harsh Vardhan in a press statement.

The party has mentioned that the bus was challaned six times earlier, but was still plying by paying bribe and then getting a fitness certificate. “Even after many assurances, the insensitivity of the government can be clearly seen,” he said. “When the RWA members went to meet the Chief Minister, she refused and kept speaking on behalf of the bus operators,” Harsh Vardhan added.

A roadways staff member was killed by some people who slit his neck in Tehsil complex just opposite SDM’s office in Dadri. His body was found in an advocate’s chamber on Sunday morning with his private parts severed.

Police, who have recovered three liquor bottles, three glasses and a diary from the spot, feel the victim had consumed liquor along with others before he was killed, apparently by some people known to him.

PROFILE
Anuradha seeks new horizons
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 8
As a performer, teacher, and choreographer, Anuradha Nehru wishes to share her extraordinary joy in dance, striving for new and effective ways to communicate the beauty of Kuchipudi to diverse audiences through new, vibrant, and creative choreography.

Her critically acclaimed performances in India, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, and the US have distinguished her as one of the leading Kuchipudi soloists in the world. She has taught for over 20 years in the United States and produced outstanding young classical dancers who are now dancing professionally in their own right.

She comes to the Ananya Dance Festival organised by Seher and beginning at the Purana Qila from October 11 with a class of her own and would present her most recent production—Navarasa, or the Nine Moods.

As a performer, Anuradha has been critically acclaimed around the world. Her stage presence and sophisticated aesthetics, whether in movement, costumes, or light design, set her performances apart from others. While her training is firmly rooted in the Kuchipudi style of her guru, Vempati Chinna Satyam, she relishes dialogue with other artistes of different genres, constantly nourishing her desire to seek new horizons for Kuchipudi.

These experiences as a solo performer internationally have contributed to her innovative choreography. Most recently the production Navarasa (The Nine Moods) premiered in Washington DC in 2005.

The Washington Post wrote, “Nehru uses Kuchipudi, the deliciously graceful yet rhythmically pungent South Indian classical form, as the expressive base from which she urges her eight dancers onto an epic and expressive quest.”

Anuradha’s work in Kuchipudi has had a particularly deep impact on the Indian diaspora in the United States. She has trained several professional dancers who have gone on to distinguish themselves as soloists.

She has been recognised by the Governor of Maryland for her “dedicated efforts to promote and preserve the classical dance form ‘Kuchipudi’ for future generations”. She is also a recipient of the ‘Teacher Recognition Certificate’ from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts for encouraging and supporting students who have been recognised for exceptional artistic achievements.

She is the artistic director of her Bethesda-based school and dance company, Kuchipudi Kalanidhi and Kalanidhi Dance.

Based in Bethesda, Maryland, Kalanidhi Dance is a company of dancers trained in the Indian classical style of Kuchipudi. Kalanidhi dancers based in Washington DC, see Kuchipudi as an unbroken thread of cultural memories of myth, religion, music, and rhythm that connects them to India.

They have been trained in the rigors of the classical form, and are using this form to explore new and creative ways to connect with diverse audiences in the United States. In this endeavor, they are striving to create for themselves a unique voice as young dancers of the Indian diaspora.

Incidentally, Navrasa is the latest in a series of dance performances Kalanidhi has presented in several venues, including the Smithsonian Institution, National Geographic, Asia Society, Indo-Indian Cultural Association of Jakarta, Singapore Arts Alliance, as well as innumerable community-based organisations. The Maryland State Arts Council recognised Kalanidhi’s work by funding its performances in 2004 and 2005.

An important part of Kalanidhi’s mission is to promote dialogue in the arts and nourish creativity through interaction with dancers of other styles and with artistes of other genres. For example, Kalanidhi has worked with modern dancer Astaad Deboo, director Tim McCarthy, the Padma Menon Dance Theater, Mayur Dance Company, Indian Dance Educators’ Association, and Dakshina or Daniel Singh Dance Company.

Anuradha Nehru, artistic director of Kalanidhi Dance, began teaching Kuchipudi in 1992. She offers classes seven days a week, developing new generations of Kuchipudi dancers trained to the highest professional standards. As a repertory company, Kalanidhi Dance upholds these high standards of creativity and performance.

Dress code for Sikh students
Our Correspondent

Ghaziabad, October 8
The Ghaziabad Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee has asked the Sikh boy students to tie turbans and girls to dress in salwar kameez with chunni as headgear. The president of Ghaziabad Gurdwara Committee, Manjit Singh made a special appeal to the management of schools and colleges in the area to ensure this as far as Sikh students were concerned.

“Turban is a traditional symbol Sikh religion which students should wear after class IX onwards. Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Amritsar and Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee have already issued similar appeals, Manjit Singh said.

This tradition is being followed from primary classes in all the schools and colleges being run by Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee in Punjab, Delhi and other states also. The Gurdwara Committee also stressed the need for marriage ceremonies to be performed in a simple way and during daytime only.

The president also appealed to Sikhs for doing away with tendency for holding marriage receptions in the evening and advised them to accomplish the marriage ceremony on Gurdwara premises only.

Manjit Singh was critical of Allahbad High Court Judge S.N. Sriwastava’s recent verdict. He said it was wrong to club all Indian religions like Jainism, Budhism and Sikhism as part of Hindu religion.

The committee condemns such decisions, Manjit Singh said, “Guru Nanak Dev ji had founded Sikhism while Guru Gobind Singh had established Khalsa Panth in 1699. To say Sikhs are Hindu is not only insulting the Sikhs but the great Sikh Gurus also,” the president stressed.
