Elusive Grant

Of the Rs 3 crore grant that the CM had promised and Rs 50 lakh that MP Charanjit Singh Atwal was to donate for Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Adarsh Senior Secondary School, not even a single penny has been spent on the school as yet.

Khatkar Kalan, September 27
Six months have passed since Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal declared that a government school would be set up in this historic village as the state’s first “adarsh school” but the students and staff here are yet to avail any new facility.

While the CM had promised on the 75th death anniversary of Bhagat Singh on March 23 this year that the school would function as an “adarsh school” in a year’s time, no such signs are visible till date.

Although the CM had committed that bright, poor students would get education free of cost, the fee being levied from the students here is almost double what any other government school of the state is charging.

Further, the location of the new school building, which is 2 km away from the main road all along the fields, does not suit many students and has rather forced many parents to withdraw their children from the school. Since the old school located on the backside of the martyr’s memorial was short of space, the new school building was constructed on the other side of the road in 1999. The students from the adjoining schools, including Gama, Thadian and Manguwal, have to cover 4 km to reach here.

The high fee structure and location in the interior side has had a fallout on the strength of the students. While the school earlier got more than 1,000 applicants against 500 seats, admission was done on the basis of an entrance test.

The situation now is just the reverse. While the school has doubled its capacity, it has just about 350 regular students from classes nursery to XII.

Nearly 150 open school students are also taking classes here.

Although an NRI had donated a bus, the school is unable to ply it for lack of funds. The poor students have been asked to pay Rs 50 as conveyance charges. While the NRI had donated Rs 10,000 for initial diesel expenses, the amount lasted a few months only.

The school already carried the name “adarsh” with it since its inception in 1999. The school already has more than 15 classrooms and a couple of toilets. There is a requirement of more rooms as the school intends to introduce medical, non-medical and commerce streams for classes XI and XII.

The school is equipped with Edusat but it has not been functional owing to incomplete apparatus. It has 11 sets of computers but there is no teacher for the purpose. A science teacher takes computer classes.

Principal Renu Bhatti says, “I have put in a request for slashing the fee and starting of three new streams for the senior secondary classes.”

Amritsar, September 27
Patriotic fervour marked the musical evening held here today to mark the birth centenary of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh.

Renowned Punjabi singers Hans Raj Hans and Jaspinder Narula rendered Sufi and pop songs on the occasion.

With the pristine building of Khalsa College in the backdrop, it was a treat to watch the artistes sing and dance to passionate cheering by a large crowd which savoured every moment of the performance.

The programme began with the play “Aazadi De Parwane” on the ideology of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev.

The performance was complemented by rare pictures of Bhagat Singh and other martyrs.

The play also featured songs like “Mera rang de basanti chola” and “Pagri sambhal jatta”.

Well-known playback singer Narula kicked off her performance with the song “Amritsar-sifti da ghar”, a song composed by her father.

It was followed by “Ai mere watan ke logon” sung on an emotional note and “Dama dam mast kalandar” as an ode to saint Shehbaz Kalandar.

Aptly titled “Shan-e-Watan”, the music-filled show also made a subtle effort to put across the message of unity and patriotism.

It was telecast live on Punjabi TV channels and Doordarshan would show highlights of the programme.

The atmosphere can best be described as electrifying as Hans struck an instant chord with the audience enthralled with his hit Sufi numbers.

The crowd went berserk the moment Hans Raj Hans stepped on to the stage.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was the chief guest. SAD acting president Sukhbir Badal and information and public relations minister Bikram Singh Majithia were also present on the occasion.

Jalandhar, September 27
Acting on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the district administration exhumed the body of George Mathew (45) after nine months of his death from the Ladhewali cemetery here today.

Mathew was reportedly residing alone in Kaki Pind and died in Aligarh on December 29 last year, said additional SHO of Sadar police station Harbhajan Singh, adding that he was working somewhere in Ludhiana.

The body was exhumed on the high court’s order dated August 30 this year on his NRI sister Suman Sohanta’s petition, said SDM Bhupinder Singh, adding his sister had suspected some foul play behind his death.

After exhuming the body, the police took it to the local civil hospital where a four-member board of doctors led by pathologist Dr Davinder Singh conducted a post-mortem examination on Thursday evening, said medical superintendent Dr Ranbir Singh while talking to The Tribune.

However, they could not reach at any conclusion about the cause of Mathew’s death and decided to send available organs to the forensic laboratory in Patiala for chemical examination and the heart to the medical college in Amritsar for that purpose, he added.

Dr Ranbir Singh said the body was again handed over to the police after conducting a post-mortem examination.

When contacted, Harbhajan Singh said the police gave the body late in the evening to Suman Sohanta for reburying it. Suman had reportedly come from England to get his brother’s body exhumed to know the exact cause of his death.

‘Congress will expose double-speak of govt’
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, September 27
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Rajinder Kaur Bhattal has said that her party would go to the people to expose the double speak of the Akali-BJP alliance.

En route to Amritsar, she talked to mediapersons at Rama Mandi Chowk during a brief stopover.

The government had failed on all fronts so far. People had already started feeling the pinch of the steep rise in the prices of essential commodities and all sections of society were feeling cheated in voting this alliance to power, she pointed out.

Taking a dig at the much-touted “sangat darshan”, she said all the people were getting was a “free darshan of the ministers and bureaucrats.” Commenting on the one-person, one-post principle in her party, she said it was the prerogative of the high command to ask its leaders to shoulder additional responsibilities.

“I am trying to justify their faith in my abilities,” she added.
