Handwara SP Haseeb Mughal said two of the accused, Azher Ahmad Mir, alias Billa, and Mohammad Sadiq Mir, alias Saada Choor, were from Langate while two, Jehangir and Suresh Kumar, were from other states and worked here. Jehangir is from Bengal while Suresh is from Rajasthan, he added.

The girl was waylaid by the accused when she was on her way to home from school. They took her to nearby orchards where she was raped and killed on July 20. They had concealed her body in bushes. As locals found her mutilated body, outrage swept across the valley and once the suspicion of the involvement of migrants arose, as the police was questioning many of them, the case took a political dimension with some separatists out to make exploit by demanding exit of outsiders from the state.
