Rajouri, August 31
Massive protests were witnessed in the town here, with members of the majority community alleging failure of the district administration in tracing out a minor girl allegedly kidnapped by a boy of other community.

Relatives of one Nahida Kouser, daughter of Lal Hussain of Saranoo, along with members of a particular community, alleged that the girl was kidnapped by one Pawan Kumar, son of Paras Ram of the same village, when she had gone to fetch water from a spring on August 9. They alleged that even as relatives of the girl lodged a first information report (FIR) against the boy and his relatives for kidnapping, the police had failed to ascertain the whereabouts of the missing girl.

"The relatives of the girl had registered the case on August 10, but 15 days have passed and the police is yet to ascertain the whereabouts of the missing girl. It (police) had arrested the relatives of the boy, but even they were let off after being picked up for questioning", said a protestor. "If they fail to trace the girl, we will have no other option but to launch an agitation".

The members of the particular community even blocked the ever-busy Abdullah Bridge and disrupted the traffic for hours together. They raised slogans against the SHO, SSP and DC for their failure in the case.

It was only after DSP, Headquarters, K.S. Jasrotia assured the protestors that before Monday the police would trace the girl.

Meanwhile, the head priest of the Jamia Masjid here also warned the administration of dire consequences in case it failed to trace the girl.

Srinagar, August 31
The state’s legislative assembly witnessed noisy scenes and scuffles when three Panthers Party members were asked to remove the red gowns after they entered the House. Prior to this they had staged a mock assembly near the Clock Tower in the Lal Chowk today morning in protest against the last week’s suspension of their senior colleague, Harshdev Singh, for the remaining session.

The three members of the Panthers Party, which has already withdrawn its support to the ruling coalition, were asked by deputy speaker, Mohammad Akbar Lone, to take their seats after removing the gowns. They refused to do so and continued their protest against Harshdev’s suspension. At this, Lone ordered marshals to evict the members, which led to the scuffle between the marshals and the protesting members who were also joined by a few National Conference members.

All three members, Balwant Singh Mankotia, Faqir Nath and Yashpaul Kundal, demanded the Chair to immediately revoke Harshdev’s suspension, as it was the last day of the session. Leader of Opposition A.R. Rather said the plea that was submitted a week ago had not been taken up so far. The House was later adjourned till 3.30 p.m. and resumed after the Friday prayers and a lunch.

The legislative assembly was adjourned sine die by speaker, Tara Chand. Earlier, four Bills were passed with a voice vote after brief discussions in which members from both Treasury and Opposition Benches participated.
