JNU students strike today
Charu Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 8
The JNUSU has announced a university strike on Thursday as students held a march on Wednesday, protesting against the university administration's order of imposing a fine of Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 each on six students and two students respectively JNUSU general secretary Sandeep Singh said, "Such punitive measures and fines are unwelcome and go against the spirit of the agreement with JNU administration. Our point is that no student is singled out and punished for a gherao, which was collectively led by the JNUSU and UGBM and was attended by over 600 students. We will not allow students to bear the burden of fines for a collective protest on workers' rights."

The JNU administration revoked rustication against 8 students in keeping with an agreement reached on July 12, which was followed by a 13-day hunger strike by students. On the basis of an appeal submitted by each student, the university administration had agreed to reconsider the punishments. These students would then be allowed to take registration this semester. The fines imposed on JNUSU president and joint-secretary continues since they have to submit their appeals, while the fine imposed on JNUSU general secretary has been revoked, after he and other students submitted a letter of appeal in keeping with the July 12 Agreement. Besides, the July 12 agreement can be said to have constituted a moral victory for students at JNU who had protested against the violation of workers' minimum wage laws on campus.

However, students have disapproved the administration's order to impose fines and the revocation order. Dhananjaya, the president of the JNUSU said, "We will not accept the administration's decision to impose fines and revoking the rustication order. According to the agreement, we have regretted and will not accept the violation of the agreement. As a result, we have held a protest march today and are calling for a university strike tomorrow."

BSES raid in Madanpur Khadar
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 8
Eight houses, 200 rooms and 150 KW of power theft. These are not some vague figures. These are statistics from an enforcement raid undertaken by an over 50-strong contingent of BSES, CISF and Delhi Police personnel in the high theft-prone area of Madanpur Khadar, a colony in the vicinity of South Delhi's upmarket Sarita Vihar.

According to BSES, as soon as the raiding team booked power theft cases in eight houses, a mob, including women, gathered there and started manhandling the team members. They threw stones from the rooftops. Several officials, including a BSES photographer were injured.

All of them were taken to a hospital and discharged after first-aid.

An FIR (No 753/07) was subsequently lodged against five persons including Kashmir Singh of Mahilla Mohalla, Mausi Colony at the Sarita Vihar Police Station.

A BSES spokesman said that routine raids were being undertaken in the area to curb the menace of power theft. Madanpur Khadar has a different kind of power theft. The area has around 40-50 houses each in turn having 30-50 rooms rented out to migrant workers for a monthly rent of Rs 1500-2000 inclusive of electricity charges.

Incidentally, renting of rooms is the main occupation of the owners of these houses.

Each room is supplied with a 1-2 KW of un-metered power supply. Most of the houses in the area blatantly steal power from nearby BSES LV mains and even the ones that have a legal BSES connection, the connected load far exceeds the sanctioned load.

In the last few months, BSES Enforcement teams have conducted over 50 raids in Madanpur Khadar, booking power theft of over 450 KW and slapping penalties of over Rs 52 lakh.

As part of the exercise to minimize the incidence of power theft and improve the quality of its power supply in Madanpur Khadarpur, BSES is streamlining its distribution network using aerial bunched insulated cables using the Low Voltage Distribution System (LVDS), said a BSES official.

Meanwhile, BSES has appealed to the residents of Madanpur Khadar to take legal BSES connections, for which camps are being regularly organised.

Return of Meer's river
R.Jaikrishan
Tribune News Service

Sirhane Meer ke ahista bolo, Abhi tuk rote rote so gaya hai (Speak softly by Meer's bedside; crying, he has just fallen off to sleep this moment).

I heard this couplet a few days after my tenth wedding anniversary. That too after a long liquor session in the baritone voice of a senior journalist.

After a gap of two decades, I have got "Meer Darya hai…" an anthology of Meer Taki Meer's poems in Devnagri script, brought out nicely by Kamna Prasad. Since I am no scholar, won't be able to point out even the transcription errors. The hardbound volume's design is similar to such books still available at Urdu Bazar in the Jama Masjid area.

Its design was so nice that I started reading it. The foreword begins with the title line and goes like this: Meer darya hai, suno shair Zabani uski Allah Allah re tabiyat ke ravani uski. (Meer is a river, hear him recite his poetry and watch the flow).

I didn't realise the fact that I was reading the couplets aloud, till a cackle from a young colleague made me tense. I realised that my smoky office cubicle was no place to read Meer.

Many words in the collection are tongue-twisters for the generation now. A bit of patience can be rewarding as most of such words have been translated into Hindi in the footnotes.

I tried to read the collection returning home in a rattling Blueline bus, but couldn't. Sudden jerks and bumps played havoc with my concentration.

Despondency caused by deprivation and bouts of psychosis made Meer to say: Ultee ho gai sab tadbeerain, kuch na dava ne kaam kiya Dekha, is beemar-e-dil ne akhir kaam tamam kiya. (Whatever I tried turned on its head, there was no cure; see how my lovelorn heart ended my life).

The legendary ghazal singer Begum Akhtar has rendered this ghazal in her inimitable style.

As I reached home, rain had just stopped and the full moon was emerging from clouds. I switched off the tubelight and plonked down on a sofa. I pulled back the curtains and soaked moonlight. I opened “Meer Dariya Hai…" And began reading the following couplet aloud: Uske Faroge-e-Husn se jhamke hai sab main noor Shamm-e-haram ho ya ki diya somnath ka. (Every thing glows with the light of His radiant being. He is the Holy lamp of Kaba or the flame in the temple of Somnath). I felt my personal pain alleviating in the quiet of the night.

I was left wondering was it faith or its loss which had made Meer to say:"

Meer ke deen-o-mazhab ko, pooccho kya ho un-ne to Kashka khaincha, dair mein baittha, kab ka tarq Islam kiya (What do you ask about Meer's faith; he smeared his forehead, sat in the temple and gave up Islam long ago).

Tibetans take to streets

New Delhi, August 8
A Tibetan activist today attempted self-immolation during a demonstration by thousands of Tibetans against China's action in Tibet ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Scores of Tibetans from India and abroad converged here for the protest to show solidarity with 14 Tibetans who have been on hunger strike for the past month demanding accountability from the Chinese government on the situation in Tibet and on whether the missing 11th Panchen Lama is still alive.

The massive public gathering, which included monks, women and children raising anti-China slogans and waving flags, demanded that China allow all the Tibetans gathered to go to Tibet and witness its current state.

They also demanded that China prove it that it is upholding the rights of people living in Tibet.

Tensin, a 25 year-old activist, from Karnataka, sustained minor injuries. The protesters said they aim to tarnish the image of China ahead of the Olympics.

"This is our first demonstration targeting the 2008 Beijing Olympics. We have one year and if they fail to recognise (the protest), we will think of another strategy towards a workable solution," said Kalsang P Godrukpa, president, Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), the organisers of the rally.

"TYC had initiated a hunger strike last month and now we will begin a campaign for Tibetan participation based on Gandhi's tradition of satyagraha. Until there is a satisfactory response from the People's Republic of China (PRC), the movement will continue and the PRC will be held responsible for any eventual consequences resulting from the movement," he said.

The most important demand is evidence to prove that Gendun Choekyi nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama, is alive, he said.

Jhuggi plot scam: Maken trying to cover up, says Vardhan
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 8
Terming the announcement by urban development minister of state Ajay Maken to get the jhuggi plot scam enquired by DDA as ridiculous, BJP Delhi Pradesh president Harsh Vardhan said that it was with the connivance of DDA that Ashok Malhotra and Congress leaders have committed the fraud.

Vardhan said, "If Congress wants to highlight the truth, the scam should be enquired by a retired Supreme Court judge, so that residents of Delhi are able to recognise the faces of the real culprits."

He pointed out though the case was exposed 15 days ago, the CBI did not consider it worth enough to interrogate the Congress legislators, ministers of Delhi government and staff of the Chief Minister, on whose recommendation VVIP numbers were allotted to the vehicles of Malhotra.

Harsh Vardhan claimed that more than 6,000 files have been recovered from Malhotra, which include documents related to plots allotted 16 years ago. He said that citizens of Delhi are aware of the fact that Congress was the ruling Party in Delhi 16 years ago and not a single leader from the BJP is involved in this bungling.

Talking on the issue, he stated the raid was carried out only when there was a dispute between a former councillor of the Congress and Malhotra for their share in the looted money.

Road rage: Hunt on for seven suspects

New Delhi, August 8
The police have launched a hunt for seven youth who had reportedly brutally beaten up a Chandigarh-based lawyer on the Lodhi Colony flyover and then attempted to throw him down from it.

The police said that the description of the suspects had been flashed to all police stations and efforts were being made to trace them. The two mobile phones which the suspects had snatched from the victim have also been put under surveillance.

Vivek Bhandari (42) was beaten up by at least seven bikers on Monday night after a minor accident on the South Delhi flyover. They also attempted to throw him off the Lodhi Colony flyover, the police said. Bhandari was forced to flee from the area abandoning his car. When he returned to the spot, he found that his two mobile phones and car stereo were missing.

This is said to be the fourth incident of road rage in the Capital in the last few weeks. Narender (22) had allegedly beaten to death Arvind, a 28-year-old plumber after an altercation over the right of way.

Meanwhile, the police has cautioned drivers not to lose their cool on the roads in case of an accident but immediately report it to the police. This would help in preventing insane violence, a senior police officer said.

This decision has been taken today at a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) meeting. The meeting was attended by the Delhi Chief Minister, Mrs Sheila Dikshit, who was Chairperson of the DJB, political member Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, MLA of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), NDMC chief Parimal Rai, urban development secretary Rakesh Mehta, chief executive officer of the DJB Arun Mathur and its other senior officers. Ramvir Singh Bidhuri advised the board to exempt the unauthorised colonies and villages from parameter of the ground water bill as residents of these localities depended on the ground water.

The Jal Board has yet not supplied water to all unauthorised colonies and villages. If it is banned for them, they will have no alternative arrangement for water, he argued. This bill is being proposed to ban the use of ground water as water level in the national capital is going down. This water is not fit for drinking. Before being used, it should be treated. The Delhi Jal Board had installed tubewells in several areas to supply potable water.

Before commencement of Sonia Vihar Water treatment plant, Dikshit said that once the plant was completed and got water from Uttar Pradesh, South and East Delhi would get proper supply.
