CM assures violence-free poll
Phagwara, August 7 Addressing a press conference here today, Badal said Bhattal’s fears about the possibility of a mid-term poll, fiscal crisis, withdrawal of various concessions like free power to the farmers, octroi and imposition of heavy taxes were baseless. “Not only would these concession stay but more relief would be given in the agricultural, industry and trade sector,” he added. Urging the public to believe the opposite of Bhattal’s remarks, Badal said the opposition was not playing a constructive and co-operative role. “The opposition should put forth its view in a healthy and positive manner in the interest of state. I have tried my best to strike a cordial relation between the ruling party and the opposition for smooth functioning and development of state. Not only my efforts were spurned by the Congress but, also they stay away from the social get-together, like lunches, during the assembly sessions,” said Badal. Dismissing the claim made by the Congress about leaving Rs 1,200 crore in the government exchequer at the end of their tenure, Badal said the previous government and its leaders had completely drained the state exchequer. “It was on official record that the Congress regime had left Rs 53,800 crore debt. As the war-defeated sides do by destroying everything, similarly Congress leaders did by drying up all the finances as they were sure of their defeat in the elections,” he said further. “We would start a new era in Punjab and make it a model by providing all the modern facilities. It was Congress, which left Punjab in fiscal mess by mercilessly wasting funds. We are now working to bail the state out by generating extra financial resources for completing the development projects,” he said. On Bhattal's threat to gherao the ministers and ruling party MLAs in case ‘political vendetta’ was not stopped, Badal said there was no such thing as political vendetta. “Law is following its own course in the cases registered against some Congressmen,” he said. “We were put behind bars even when there was no prima facie case against us. We will not do that. The legal actions would follow in a lawful way,” said Badal. |
Users will no more have multiple LPG connections
Chandigarh, August 7 Acting on the “one “The decision has been taken to mitigate the shortage of LPG, particularly in winters, and
check its widespread misuse by he automobile industry, HS Bedi, general manager, IOC, who is coordinating the decision with other oil companies, says. In fact, a survey had already been conducted by the IOC and findings fed into a software to weed out multiple users. During the next two months, the multiple users would be issued notices to “surrender” the spare connections, sources said adding that by the end of this year or January next year, the multiple connections would be blocked by the companies. It is learnt that the IOC had started issuing notices to families having more than one connection asking why the “spare connection” should not be blocked. The process of issuing notices will be completed by September and thereafter the consumers will be given time to surrender the multiple connections. During the survey it was found that out of 44.5 lakh LPG consumers in Punjab, about seven lakh were using multiple connections. Similarly, in Chandigarh alone, about 50,000 multiple connections out of a total of 3.20 lakh will have to blocked following the new policy. In Himachal about 8 per cent of the 13.5 lakh connections were found to be multiple connections, the sources added. Besides taking care of LPG shortage, the “surrendered” connections would go a long way in meeting the requirements of those families who were still without an LPG connection, the sources added. |
Stone of bank complex laid at Nawanshahr
Nawanshahr, August 7 Addressing the gathering, he said the SAD-BJP government had initiated effective steps to revamp the cooperative sector in Punjab. Due to the negligence of the previous government, the cooperative sector banks in five districts - Patiala, Ropar, Amritsar, Mohali and Tarn Taran - had virtually been facing closure as the flow of funds from NABARD for these banks was stopped during the rule of the previous government, which did nothing to bail out the cooperative sector banks from the financial crisis. Due to it, the farmers had to face hardships in getting fertilisers and pesticides, consequently affecting the agriculture production, he said, adding that the SAD-BJP government, with a view to strengthening cooperative as well as agriculture sector, had taken up the issue with the Reserve Bank of India and got a sum of Rs 550 crore for the purpose. Besides, the issue of providing hassle-free and adequate credit facilities for the agriculture sector through cooperative societies had also been raised with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The problem of scarcity of DAP due to cut in the supply imposed by the IFFCO had also been solved. The funds for ensuring proper supply of DAP had been deposited with IFFCO by the state government, he said. Jatinder Singh Kariha, Chaudhary Mohan Lal and Chaudhary Nand Lal also addressed the gathering. |

Evidence suggests large deficiencies of equipment in Army unit
Chandigarh, August 7 When the deficiencies were sought to be regularised by the Commander 192 Mountain Brigade in 2005, the commanding officer of 8 Mountain Division Ordnance Unit (DOU) had returned the documents to the brigade raising serious observations and doubting of such deficiencies had actually taken place. The DOU had observed that most of the items were of controlled nature and the loss of some of these could have serious implications on national security. The DOU had also observed the deficiencies could not be regularised unless the statements were supported by the findings of a court of inquiry and the responsibility for the losses, especially secrecy devices, was fixed. Recommending that the extent of the loss also needed to be priced, the DOU had suggested that aspects which needed to be investigated included whether the unit actually had any such deficiency as reflected by the statements sent to it, and if the unit did not have any such deficiencies actually on ground than why were such deficiencies being reported. Security implications of secrecy devices lost or being made surplus also needed to be investigated. Among the observations of the DOU items listed as deficient was that the unit concerned had operated 45 light machine guns with 38 breechblocks missing. Other items listed as deficient included magazines, bayonets, firing pins, adaptors for night vision goggles, night vision binoculars, 20 field telephones and two auto telephone sets, radio batteries and radio battery charges and a number of other parts of weapons and equipment. The defence counsel argued that no court of inquiry was held into the matter and given the situation, no reliance could be placed on the authenticity and accuracy of the documents concerning the record of ammunition. The defence also pointed out that as per ammunition record, 14 Mahar was holding only 604 mortar bombs which were handed over to 4/8 Gorkha Rifles, which replaced it in the Kargil Sector, However on ground 3,400 bombs were found which 4/8 GR took on ledger charge after joint inspection of the ammunition was
carried out. |
