Day after, BJP fails to match its partner
Jalandhar, August 4 During the conference Kalia found himself in an awkward position a number of times, especially while answering questions related to the projects. He was also unable to give a satisfactory reply on why the alliance parties had no common manifesto. The only Akali leader present at the conference was SAD district president Gurcharan Singh Channi, who preferred to remain mum. Among others present were BJP MLA Bhagat Chunni Lal, Rajinder Bhandari, Avinash Rai Khanna, Vijay Sampla and Ashwini Kumar. During the conference Congress district vice president Amarjit Singh Rabi, who was denied a ticked from ward 48, was also welcomed in the party fold. The BJP poll document made run-of-the-mill promises like introduction of a city bus service, purchase of advanced equipment for cleanliness, beautification of Company Bagh and other parks, elevated roads and flyovers, simplification of taxes and other basic amenities, including adequate street lights, clean, drinking water, improved sewerage system and
better roads. It also highlighted state government’s achievements in the four-month tenure. |
Aggarwal’s elevation widens rift in Kapurthala BJP
Phagwara, August 4 The election of Aggarwal by Punjab BJP vice-president Manjit Singh Rai is being termed as against the constitution of the party. Aggarwal was elevated without holding any formal poll even as the other seven candidates did not withdraw their nomination papers. Also, BJP leader from Phagwara Balbhadhar Sein Duggal, who was a strong contender for the post, had support of six candidates, including Akash Kalia, Om Parkash Chawla, Purshotam Passi, Yash Mahajan, Hardyal Singh Cheeta and Umesh Dutt Sharda. He also enjoyed support of prominent RSS leaders Lala Balwant Rai Gupta and Yagya Dutt and Punjab technical education minister Ch Swarana Ram. According to the BJP constitution, first the mandal presidents are elected and then they choose their district president. However, in Kapurthala, only 7 mandal chiefs have been elected till now out of the total 14. Resentment prevails among local BJP leaders, who have expressed their strong protest against the ‘dictatorial’ appointment. Duggal, claiming to be a loyal activist of BJP, first refused to speak. However, after much coaxing he disclosed that the nomination papers were filed on August 1 and the election process should have been completed within 24 hours. Duggal said he had support of six nominees and the latter had withdrawn their names from the fray. Punjab BJP election in charge Vinod Sharma said Aggarwal’s appointment seems to be a result of some communication gap or misunderstanding. The matter would be resolved soon amicably, he added. |
Kundi connection powers Bhattal’s rally
Jalandhar, August 4 During an election campaign addressed by leader of opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal in favour of Gill at Urban Estate Phase-II market, arrangements for electricity in the pandal were made using a kundi connection. Power was stolen by connecting cables with a transformer falling hardly 60 feet away from the venue. Surprisingly, no one including the police personnel, residents or anyone else present at the rally pointed out to the offence. The fact that kundi connection were being used became all the more clear when the generators in the pandal were switched off but the electrical gadgets continued to work. The generators were functioning as there was a power cut in the area. The moment power was restored, generators were put off as they were creating noise. Also, the pandal which was otherwise full to its capacity, primarily had a migrant population filling up the chairs. The ward, which largely comprises of prime areas including Urban Estate Phase-II, New Jawahar Nagar and Civil Lines, does not have as many migrant labourers there. Gill, when asked for his comments, denied having used any kundi connection. “We only used generators for power”, he pleaded. — TNS |
Health dept raid: Traders protest
Jalandhar, August 4 The raiding team reached Mahajan’s shop and asked for samples of the items. Mahajan protested alleging that the raid was being conducted at the behest of Manoranjan Kalia, local bodies minister. He alleged that the raid to harass him because his wife, Suman Mahajan, was contesting as an independent candidate from Ward 37. Mahajan had to contest as an independent since the ward she was eyeing had been allotted to the SAD candidate Ratanjit Kaur Kahlon. Over 400 shopkeepers and their supporters joined in the protest. Agitated shopkeepers were pacified when BJP MLA Rajinder Bhandari reached the spot and assured them that there was no malicious intention behind the raid. Unable to pacify the shopkeepers Bhandari had to call up the Civil Surgeon in front of the protesters and ask him not to take any further action. Denying this, Manoranjan Kalia, when contacted said, “I was not even aware of the incident till the matter was brought to my notice in the evening.” |
