Atta-dal a bluff: Bhattal

Patiala, August 5
The government has converted its atta-dal scheme into wheat-dal. It has gone back on its promise to provide atta-dal on subsidised rates and this is a fraud with poor people of the state. These allegations were levelled by Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, leader of Opposition in the Assembly, at a press conference held at the residence of Samana MLA Brahm Mohindra here today.

Amarinder hits back at ‘chhota Badal’
Amritsar, August 5
Holding the state government responsible for the on-going Sikh-dera impasse, Amarinder Singh alleged that by raking up the issue, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Badal were further complicating the matter, which would deteriorate law and order situation in the state.

The SAD-BJP alliance will capture all Municipal Corporations in Punjab. This was claimed by general secretary of the SAD and MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa before mediapersons at PWD Rest House here today.

3 mishaps in 12 hrs, 6 die
Hoshiarpur, August 5
Six persons, including a woman and a young boy, died on the spot, while 72 persons were injured in three separate road accidents during the past 12 hours in the district.

SAD(A) to hold rally against govt ‘bias’
Amritsar, August 5
The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) will hold a rally in Ajnala against the Punjab government for illegal confinement of its leaders. Baldev Singh Sirsa, senior vice-president, SAD(A), announced that the rally would start from Ajnala and end in Amritsar city.

Congress MP Preneet Kaur today came down heavily on the Akali-BJP government in the state for its anti-Congress attitude and political vendetta. She was in the town to attend a prayer meeting organised on the 76th birth anniversary of late Congress leader and former state Cabinet minister Gurdarshan Singh.

Voltage dip caused grid failure

A sudden voltage dip caused the northern grid collapse yesterday. From the reports received by the board officials here it has been inferred that sudden voltage instability in the 220 kv transmission system caused thermal units to trip that led to grid collapse.

The Punjab Mandi Board is facing shortage of over 1,000 staff members at its 147 grain markets and 1400 sub-yards located across the state. Admitting that there was shortage of staff Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, chairman, Punjab Mandi Board, said here today.

Police clueless in missing BSNL employee case
Pathankot, August 5
Even though a fortnight has elapsed since the mysterious disappearance of a BSNL employee, Usha Khanna, the local police has failed to make any headway in this regard. Though the police has been working on various theories, including elopement and abduction of the woman, nothing concrete has come out as yet.

Couple held with smack
Bassi Pathana, August 5
The local police has arrested Vinod Kumar, alias Happy, and Geeta, both local residents, for allegedly selling smack. The police has seized 10 gm of smack from them. According to DSP D.S. Rana, the police got a tip-off that both had been running the business of selling smack in the area.

The district police registered an FIR today against an independent candidate and his deceased mother on a charge of evading stamp duty. An FIR has been lodged against the late Mohinder Kaur, independent candidate in MC poll Joginder Singh Tony and several others under Sections 420 and 120-B,IPC, and 47,Indian Stamp Act.

Five held for robbery
Gurdaspur, August 5
In less than 48 hours, the police claims having solved the Ladpur petrol station robbery case by nabbing five persons. SSP Lok Nath Angra said five members of the gang were arrested from various hideouts while one was absconding.

10-yr-old boy hurt in accident
Kharar, August 5
Ten-year-old Jagjit Singh, a resident of Santa Majra village, was injured seriously after being hit by a mini truck this afternoon. The incident took place at Daun village when the boy was going with another person on a bicycle.

Local girl Jugnu Chowhan has overall topped MA (political science) examination conducted by Punjabi University, Patiala, securing 1,133 marks out of 1,600 marks. A product of Our Lady of Fatima Convent School, she has been a regular scholarship-holder and has published a poetry book in English, “Shardhanjali”.

MSc-I (IT) at Modi college
Patiala, August 5
Punjabi University has given its formal approval to Multani Mal Modi College to start MSc-I (information technology) from this session. Stating this, principal Dr Satish Kumar Bhardwaj said applications for the course would be accepted up to August 11 and interviews for admission would be held on August 13.
