Jalandhar, July 22
An inter-state gang of kidnappers, including criminals from Punjab, Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh, was involved in the abduction of city trader Ashok Madaan, who was rescued on Saturday, said Adampur SHO Jasbir Singh Randhawa.

The police has arrested four of the accused and at least six more are still absconding, said the SHO.

The arrested persons include Shera’s mother Nirmal Kaur, Kashipur (Uttranchal) resident Narinder Singh, his wife Paramjeet Kaur and their son Jaswinder Singh. They were arrested from Shera’s house where they had detained Madaan.

The six accused who are still at large included Shera, Bittu, Bunty (both UP residents), Soni Sandhu, Baba and Nishan Singh, who belong to Amritsar.

Meanwhile, according to the sources, the police reportedly managed to trace the trader’s location from a ransom call made by the kidnappers to his family from an Andhra Pradesh circle mobile number.

The kidnappers reportedly demanded Rs 25 lakh from Madaan’s family for his release. Soon after the ransom call, the CIA staff located the site where the trader had been kept with the help of service provider and alerted the other police teams, the sources added. In the meantime, the police was in the process of producing the accused before the duty magistrate and seek 10-day remand.

The trader was rescued from Khiala village in Tarn Taran district.

Dispute over village land politicised
Parmod Bharti

Nawanshahr, July 22
The dispute over the common land between two villages falling under Balachaur subdivision - Natha Nangal and Surapur - has started taking political turn as the BSP general secretary and former Balachaur MLA, accompanied with Natha Nangal sarpanch Roshan Lal and other BSP leaders, accused the police of siding with the persons allegedly involved in an attack on Dalits, including women. BSP leaders demanded police action against the accused within 10 days, otherwise they would launch a stir.

Giving details of the incident, Hargopal Singh and Rohan Lal told the media persons that the Natha Nangal panchayat had got a grant of Rs 2 lakh. It decided to construct a brick-lined road on the shamlat land situated near the adjoining Surapur village. The panchayat got the land demarcated by the patwari and started construction work on July 14. Residents of Surapur allegedly attacked the labourers and other persons present at the site. Sohan Lal, Balbir Chand, Kaushalaya, Gurbaksh Kaur and Narinder Kaur were injured.

When the matter was reported to Kathgarh SHO Sulakhan Singh, he instead of taking any action against the accused, misbehaved with women and got the building material removed from the construction site. The matter was reported to the DSP but no action had been taken yet, alleged the BSP leaders.

Balachaur DSP G.S. Cheema, when contacted on the phone, rubbished the allegation of police inaction. The police had taken prompt action to prevent the clash between the warring factions to maintain law and order. As the dispute was concerned with the revenue department, a report was submitted to the deputy commissioner of Nawanshahr. The DC has asked the SDM of Balachaur to look into the matter. The SDM had called both the parties on Wednesday. The petty dispute over a piece of common village land was being politicised by some vested interests just for getting political mileage, he further alleged.
