Don’t ply buses for two days: CM to operators
New Delhi, July 20 The government was compelled to take such a hard decision as there was no let-up in irresponsible behaviour of Blueline bus drivers and operators. She made this announcement at a high-level meeting which was attended by Delhi transport minister Haroon Yusuf; chief secretary Ramesh Narayanswami; principal secretary (Home), Shamsher Sherif; special commissioner, Delhi Police, Y.S. Dadwal; joint commissioner of police (Traffic), Qamar Ahmed; transport commissioner R. Chandramohan; chairman-cum-managing director, DTC, Anshu Prakash; and other senior officers. Another high-level meeting would be convened on Wednesday to examine the situation, she said. The Chief Minister stated that the city-government is concerned about safety and security of the passengers. The government cannot remain a mute spectator. She further directed her government and requested the Delhi Police to immediately initiate a 'road safety campaign' through print and electronic media. Dikshit expressed her deep concern over the loss of lives of innocent persons in incidents of rash and negligent drive of Blueline buses. She instructed the chief secretary and transport commissioner to continue crackdown on Blueline buses and not to allow these buses on Saturday and Sunday. The buses would only be allowed to ply on road after rectification of shortcomings and strict inspection by the transport authority. She directed the transport commissioner, CMD, DTC to augment the fleet of DTC buses on this Saturday and Sunday to overcome the shortage of public transport. The passengers would have enough buses at their disposal and no passenger would face any difficulty, she said. She directed the officers of the transport department to mark a visible sign on those Blueline buses which were found absolutely fit. This would remove fear of the passengers. The conductors of the DTC and Blueline buses should be provided with an electric bell to stop and restart the bus. |

It's hard to rein in Blueline drivers!
New Delhi, July 20 Darshan Jain, 53-year-old Haryana government employee who was crushed to death yesterday by a speeding bus in Peeragarhi area of west Delhi, became 64th victim this year. Even though chief minister Sheila Dikshit has announced a phased withdrawal of the 4200-strong fleet, it did not seem to bring any immediate relief to the common man. Common men and transport experts are unanimous that phasing out the fleet without any alternative plan would only add to the woes of the commuters. They will have to fight to squeeze into the already overcrowded buses as was seen recently. They will be forced to travel perched on the rear bumpers of the buses. The need of the hour is to ensure discipline on road in view of the burgeoning traffic. At the same time they asserted that the government must ensure that the drivers are trained and there is an increase in the number of buses. State transport minister Haroon Yusuf insisted that the government was keeping a 'close watch' on the errant bus drivers and said indiscipline would not be tolerated. He said any bus involved in a fatal accident was being impounded and its permit cancelled. The minister said the government has already invited letters of intent from corporates and cooperatives to operate buses so as to bring improvement in the public transport system. "But all this will take some time," he added. Yusuf said the buses will have to follow traffic rules, while adding that the enforcement drive of the state government would continue. He said the Delhi government has written to the centre to make Section 304 (a) non-bailable so that it acts as a deterrent for the over-zealous drivers. Agreeing that the accidents must be curbed, Shamlal Gola of the Delhi Bus Ekta Manch, an association of bus owners, said after the clampdown, there has been a definite change in the attitude of drivers. The bus owners were taking a serious view of the issue and want the accidents to be curbed at any cost, he said. Admitting that the drivers were overworked, he said ideally a bus must have at least three drivers who could work in shifts. "But here, the drivers have to work in double shifts many times. We have requested the state government to allow us to employ drivers from outside Delhi and train them in good training schools here. We hope to get a go-ahead on this," he added. |

LG to monitor Games preparations
New Delhi, July 20 He took this decision at a meeting held a few days back with the agencies involved in the preparation work for the Games. In the beginning, there were some problems in developing the Games Village adjacent to Akshardham Temple. Now, the issue has been worked out with the intervention of the Central government. A Dubai-based company, MR Group has been given the contract to develop the Games Village. This is a time-bound contract. Addressing a conference, the Lt. Governor said that a meeting would be held after every three months with the agencies concerned to review the development work for preparation of Commonwealth games. The latest report of experts confirmed that the development of Games Village would not affect the width of the river, the Lt Governor claimed. Referring to the measures to prevent Yamuna pollution, the Lieutenant Governor said that with an expenditure of Rs 1,800 crore, the Delhi Jal Borad (DJB) would set up a sewage treatment plant near Najafgarh and Wazirabad drains to treat the drains water. This will also be done in a time-bound manner, he assured. He said that before the commencement of the Commonwealth Games, the Delhi government had to carry out a number of development works like Metro rail and high capacity buses and CCTV camera would be installed to monitor the traffic movement. If any traffic police was found not doing his duty fairly, he would be suspended, the LG said. He said the Delhi government's policy of bread and breakfast would be sent to the Central government for approval. |

GIS unit to streamline power network
Gurgaon, July 20 Talking to 'The Tribune', financial commissioner and principal secretary, power, Ashok Lavasa informed that Gurgaon would be the first district of Haryana to set up GIS plant. He added that this would be a demo plant and after reviewing its progress report, plans would be framed to set up GIS plants in other parts of the state also. He added that for setting up GIS plants, preference would be given to those areas of the state where there was a shortage of land and its rate was quite high. He added that this system was being adopted despite its high cost of installation as it required small piece of land. The cost of setting up GIS plant is higher in comparison to the setting up of the normal sub-station. Sources in the power department in Gurgaon said that a team of experts visited the existing GIS plant of 66 KV in Ajmeri Gate at Delhi today to inspect its working. He added that the electricity department had already cleared the bidding process for setting up of two GIS plants at Sector 43 and 51 in Gurgaon. Sources added that 1.25 acres of land has also been acquired for another GIS plant in Sector 17 near Atul Kataria Chowk in Gurgaon. Besides, some private builders like DLF, Unitech has also approached the government for setting up GIS plants in their new residential projects for proper distribution of electricity. Lavasa added that to meet the growing power needs at Gurgaon around 13 to 14 substations would be set up in the coming two years. He said the power demand in Gurgaon was increasing by 20 per cent. |
