The police today booked two Army personnel at Bandipore, on the charge of attempting rape on a girl in nearby Gujarpati Kunan village on Tuesday afternoon. Demonstration by villagers demanding action against the Army personnel involved forced the police to lob teargas shells and fire into the air to disperse the protesters . Eight persons were injured in the melee while several received bruises when running for cover.

Tension gripped the district town again this morning amid a complete shutdown followed by protests by people demanding action against the Army personnel. The situation was brought under control when the deputy commissioner announced that an FIR No: 122/07 had been lodged at the local police station under Sections 376, 511 and 452 of the RPC against the erring Army personnel.

The trouble reportedly started when two Army personnel in civvies and posing as militants entered the house of Mohammad Rafiq at Gujarpati Kunan, 5 km from Bandipore, on Tuesday afternoon. They had reportedly attempted rape on his 17-year- old daughter, who sensing trouble allegedly for the third consecutive time raised the alarm.

The villagers gathered and caught hold of the two Army men and paraded them to Bandipore town and threatened to take action against them on their own. The police prevented the situation from worsening and resorted to lathi charge and fired into the air to quell the demonstration.

Film fest inaugurated
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, June 27
While the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister inaugurated the first International Film Festival here this morning, media professionals associated with Srinagar Doordarshan Kendra sought the redressal of their grievances for they had been long ignored by the union ministry concerned.

The two-day festival of documentary, short and animation films has been organised by the Films Division and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, after a similar festival was organised in Jammu two weeks ago. Nearly 40 films from outside and eight local films are being exhibited during the two-day festival at the SKICC here.

"Do not play with our sentiments", read one of the banners raised by the Kashmir Media Professionals Association in the audience as Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad began his inaugural speech. They demanded the shifting of the DD Kashmir Channel to Srinagar, which had been functioning from New Delhi since its inception six years ago, and had not been shifted despite union minister Priyaranjan Dasmunshi’s assurances here last year.

Azad said there was need to channel the available talent in Jammu and Kashmir and there was no better place for the film world to shoot different kinds of movies here.

The inauguration took place after the screening of "Little Terrorist", a young boy who happened to cross over to this side of the Indo-Pakistan border while playing. The boy is prevented from the wrath of security forces by an old Hindu and his daughter who finally help him to reunite with his family on the other side of the border. "Almost 99 per cent of the people in the country are like that", commented Azad adding the film had been suitably chosen for the occasion.
