BJP to submit fresh chargesheet today
Shimla, June 27 A delegation comprising senior BJP leaders will submit the memorandum to Governor V.S. Kokje tomorrow evening. Besides listing corruption charges against the government, ministers and senior Congress leaders, the BJP will demand a probe into the charges against Virbhadra Singh and his wife Pratibha Singh contained in the audio CD released by Mankotia. The BJP said the Chief Minister was terming the allegations against him as baseless and was unnecessarily dragging name of the BJP in the affair. “Under these circumstances, it becomes imperative that either the Chief Minister should order a high-level probe by an independent agency or else he should quit the post,” said BJP leader Ashok Kapatia. Pratibha Singh should be suspended from the Lok Sabha as her name also figured in the CD episode. “If BJP MP Suresh Chandel could be suspended in the money for query scam, why should the Chief Minister’s wife be spared,” the BJP leader said. |
Election of Una ZP chief set aside
Shimla, June 27 This order was passed on a petition filed by Balbir Bagga , where in he had challenged the election of Sahota on the ground that the election of chairperson had been materially affected by non-compliance of the provisions of the Panchayti Raj Act and rules. The petitioner said in his petition that he and Sahota had received eight votes each. But the presiding officer declared one invalid vote in favour of Sahota and declared her elected chairperson. The petitioner challenged this election before the divisional commissioner, Kangra, who declared null and void the election of Sahota as chairperson. Taxi operators’ strike today
Shimla, June 27
The action committee today submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner Tarun Kapoor informing him about their decision to keep their vehicles off the road. They will keep their taxis in the stand from 8.30 am tomorrow. They have suggested that the government should issue a separate series with either three number or “T” for taxis which will be allowed to ply only locally. Only the owners of these vehicles will have to get meters installed in their taxis. The other taxis bearing 1 and 2 series will be allowed to operate on long routes and will not have to get the meters. The taxi operators have also conveyed to the government that the rate of Rs 5.60 per km for smaller vehicles and Rs 10 km for bigger vehicles like Sumos and Qualis was too high and unacceptable to them. Moreover, the flat rate of Rs 50 for smaller vehicles and Rs 70 for bigger vehicles with meter down was also too high. The taxi operators also pointed out that Rs 3,400 as meter charges and Rs 400 as installation charges were too high. They said till the government takes a decision on all the issues, they will keep their vehicles off the road. |

Protest against sacking of female staff Baddi, June 27 Throughout the night, Awasthi camped in the unit with over two dozen workers, mostly girls. The management, which found itself in a fix, also had to remain on the premises during the night. According to Awasthi, he was instructed by his seniors to go to the unit and sort out the matter. The management, however, said Awasthi had started causing problems by unnecessarily probing into the cases of the fired female employees. Unit manager Anil Kumar Nijhawan said the legal procedure was followed in the dismissal of the girls. The girls were hampering the work of the unit and were given a month’s notice before being sacked, Nijhawan maintained. “Moreover, an agreement had been signed between the girls and the management a few months back on some common matters. However, the girls breached the agreement and continued to cause indiscipline. Awasthi knew everything but kept on pushing for non-acceptable demands, Nijhawan said. Nijhawan added Awasthi forced the unit workers to stage the dharna using unethical measures. Awasthi and his subordinates did not allow the staff buses to ferry the workers in the evening, Nijhawan accused. After persuasion by the management, most of the workers left with 25 still hanging around, Nijhawan added. Awasthi, however, said the girls were sacked in an unethical manner. The management, in an attempt to shut down the unit, was finding ways to remove its workers, Awasthi said. Awasthi added that his motive was to solve the girls’ case, besides checking on the progress of the issuing of identity cards to the workers. He added that the workers insisted they rectify things on the spot, adding they volunteered to stay back. Labour commissioner B.R. Verma could not be contacted as he was away on a tour. The management has registered an FIR at around 1.25 am, after the situation became normal. |

JP Thermal Plant Bagheri (Nalagarh), June 27 Cutting across political lines, leaders of various parties joined the cause of the villagers. H.K. Saini, local BJP MLA, said the plant would not be allowed at any cost. It was against environment norms and could pose serious damage to the area, Saini maintained. Saini added that if JP needed power they should set up a hydel power project rather than a thermal plant or seek power from the Himachal Pradesh government. Chairman of the Solan Zila Parishad Ram Kumar and senior Congress leader Lakhwinder Rana also spoke during the occasion. Plant director Rajiv Gaur’s speech on measures to control pollution was cut short by protests. The agitated villagers accused the JP authorities of befooling them by making amendments in the project. While showing a map of the earlier project, the villagers said the land now earmarked for the thermal plant was earlier meant for hospitals, schools and other social services of the JP. The enraged villagers even torn papers meant to take their signatures. “We can not trust anyone. The signatures could be used in any way,” the villagers claimed. The public hearing team comprised of member secretary of the Pollution and Control Board A.K. Gulati, SDM Nalagarh Manmohan Sharma and ADC Solan Lokhinder Chauhan.
