NHRC approached on threat to life
in jail
Karnal, June 20 The family fears Rajbir Singh, who has completed over a decade in jail, could be killed in the lockup and ‘shown’ as a suicide case as no bribe was offered to the jail officials to update his behavioral records in the jail. In the last few years more than five prisoners had reportedly committed ‘suicide’ in the high security jail, the family alleged. Talking to The Tribune, here today, Harpal Singh, brother of Rajbir, alleged that the jail officials were not allowing his brother to sign the court papers to pursue the case of his release from the jail. The Tribune possesses the letter written to the NHRC where the family had alleged that the jail authorities were not allowing them to meet Rajbir. He was convicted for the murder of his classmate at Siwah village in Panipat district in 1992. Following a clash in the school, he had killed a fellow student of class XII. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in January, 1995. His new jail record ticket was manipulated and not updated intentionally by an official,'' his brother said. The alleged ticket goof-up was further delaying Rajbir's release, he alleged. The application to the NHRC alleged that the family members had not been allowed to meet Rajbir since June 12 nor any reason was cited for it.
