Srinagar, June 18 He was speaking at the inauguration of legal awareness campaign 2007-08 presided over by Governor S. K. Sinha, at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention (SKICC) here this afternoon. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Justice Ashok Bhan, executive chairman of the NALSA were the guests of honour. Acting Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Aftab Alam was also present, while high court judge N A Kakroo and executive chairman, State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) was also present. A large number of judges, advocates and retired judges of the high court also attended the inaugural function. To provide speedy and inexpensive justice, Chief Justice Balakrishnan said 7000 additional courts were being set up with the appointment of new judges across the country, adding 2.5 crore cases were pending in different courts. Chief Minister Azad welcomed the Chief Justice of India on his first visit to the state after taking over and lauded role of judiciary in legal awareness. There was need for speedy and inexpensive justice, Azad said adding judiciary was doing "extremely well" in the state. "We need equal justice for all", Azad said and asserted there was need to educate people and make them aware of dispute resolution. He suggested a mechanism to provide legal assistance to people at different levels so that everyone had easy access to justice. Justice Ashok Bhan, executive chairman, NALSA, said its aim was to "do our best to society" by providing legal awareness programme to help the poor and create awareness among the masses. He lamented there were issues like oppression against women who were given less wages than given to men. He questioned what was the use of this right when people lacked physical and monetary power to get justice. |
Woman SPO held for carrying Chinese mine
Rajouri, June 18 Defence spokesperson said woman SPO Parveena Akhtar was apprehended by security forces while she was returning from Kirni village in Poonch on June 1 at 3.30 pm. He said the woman was in possession of Chinese anti- personal mine, one 4x2 inch with four led lights device and one nine volt battery. The spokesperson said the woman had been handed over to Poonch police station . He said during questioning she informed she had received the explosive material from Akram and Wali Mohammad, both residents of Kirni. He added both accused had also been arrested for investigation. — TNS |
Hizbul communication centre busted
Udhampur, June 18 Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Doda Manohar Singh told the Tribune a team of Assar police had smashed a communication network of militants. SHO Assar Sameer Jeelani said on a tip-off a search operation in the Nijwan Top area of Assar yielded sophisticated equipment used for communication. Jeelani said two wireless sets, antennas of some satellite phones, aprons of satellite phones and three pre -time devices and remote control of IEDs were also recovered from the hideout. —

Police clueless on theft of AK rifles, carbine
Udhampur, June 18 Besides two PSOs, Kishtwar police today picked up another suspect in this case but failed to get any lead in the case. Rifles were stolen from the house of ex-MLA Inderwal Qazi Jalal-ud-Din, at present putting up at Kishtwar, three days back. Three PSOs of Qazi, identified as Kewal Krishan, Dev Raj and Irshad Ahmed were not inside the house when some unidentified persons decamped with their weapons. |
Three Lashkar militants killed
Srinagar, June 18 On a tip-off the police launched a search at Mirpora Chewdara in the Beerwah area in which the militants were cornered in an open field. The militants opened fire on the security forces that led to an encounter, which resulted in the death of three Lashkar militants. One of them has been identified as Chotta Furqan,divisional commander of the outfit. Three AK 47 rifles, some grenades and a large quantity of ammunition have been recovered from the site of encounter. Unidentified militants shot at and injured Raheel Ahmad Bhat of Mirhama Kulgam at Kanjikulla in Kulgam district yesterday. — TNS |
Panthers anti-Jammu, says BJP Jammu, June 18 ''The Panthers Party, which remained in the government for more than four-and-a-half years, is equally responsible for all anti-Jammu decisions and misdeeds of the government,'' BJP's J and K unit president Ashok Khajuria said at a press conference here. ''The BJP holds the Panthers Party responsible for all actions of the state government which have harmed people of the Jammu region and enabled Kashmir to further strengthen its grip over Jammu and Ladakh,'' the BJP leader stated. Khajuria also dubbed senior state Congress leader Mangat Ram Sharma, along with Bhim Singh, ''Kashmiri spokesmen''. Both these leaders had harmed the cause of Jammu to the hilt, he added. |

BSNL network down for 2 months; villagers protest Udhampur,June 18 Residents vented anger at janta darbar of deputy commissioner, Reasi, Sanjeev Verma who was at the tehsil headquarters to hear grievances of people At the darbar, all villagers complained about the failure of the communication network. They lambasted BSNL authorities for failure to restore network in the area. The deputy commissioner took up the
matter with the chief general manager (CGM) BSNL asking him to restore telecommunication as this belt was militancy hit. Sub divisional magistrate Mahore Tanbir Iqbal Malik told the Tribune residents had been facing hardship due to the failure of the BSNL to restore communication network at Mahore belt. Residents threatened an agitation against BSNL authorities if the network was not restored in two days. Earlier at the darbar, residents alleged mess-up in the distribution of ration meant for poor people. Residents alleged a nexus between dealers and officials of the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution as authorities were not providing ration at village level. Residents also demanded a degree college in Mahore as poor students found it difficult to continue studies due to unavailability of infrastructure in the
tehsil. |
