NC, PDF agree on holding talks with Salahuddin Srinagar, April 8 These include the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference, ruling coalition partners, the PDP and the Peoples Democratic Forum (PDF) and the opposition National Conference. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has hailed what she called NC’s change of heart on the issue of holding talks with the Pakistan-based supreme commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, Syed Salahuddin. She said the National Conference had been trumpeting that the PDP-advocated separatist agenda "when we called for the inclusion of the Hizbul Mujahideen in the dialogue process. It is now vociferously raising the same demand", said Mehbooba Mufti while addressing a public meeting in the Tangmarg area of Baramula district near here today. Opposition National Conference president Omar Abdullah had late last week strongly advocated the demand for holding talks with Syed Salahuddin for finding an everlasting solution to the Kashmir problem. His stand was welcomed by the Hizbul Mujahideen and the like-minded organisations for it would be the only way out along with taking into consideration the viewpoints of other separatist and mainstream political parties. Minister for Transport Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, who is heading the vibrant Peoples Democratic Forum, constituent of the coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir, had also expressed similar views yesterday. He has demanded the inclusion of all separatist political and militant organisations in the dialogue process at a time when India and Pakistan were engaged in the process for a peaceful solution to the Kashmir problem. |

Dul Hasti power project awaits commissioning
Jammu, April 8 Official sources said despite announcement by the NHPC that the Prime Minister had been requested to inaugurate the prestigious project no date had been fixed for his visit to Kishtwar. According to the NHPC authorities,"We have carried out successful trial run of two of the three turbines which generate 260 MW of electricity. The trial run for the third turbine was to be carried out within a day or two so that by the middle of April the project was able to generate 390 MW of electricity." The first trial run of one turbine was carried out on March 17 followed by trial run of the second turbine on March 24. The authorities said Jammu and Kashmir was entitled to receive 12 per cent of the total electricity generated from the project, which came to 50 MW, free of charge and the remaining 340 MW were to be diverted to the northern grid. The project will have the capacity to generate 85 to 95 lakh units of electricity per day which could yield a revenue of Rs 2.60 to Rs 2.80 crore a day. State power development department engineers said here today that the commissioning of the project would not only ease power shortage in the state, but also help "us" in purchasing additional power from the northern grid with less transmission and distribution losses. The engineers said it took over in 1991, but left the work in 1994 unfinished because of militancy related violence and technical difficulties the French experts faced in boring
tunnels. In 1997, the work was handed over to JP Industries which was to complete the project in 2003, but it took four more years. The project has finally been completed at a cost of Rs 4,960 crore when in 1983, at the time of its foundation laid by late Indira
Gandhi, its cost was estimated at Rs 1,260 crore. |
