2 robberies: Rs 11 lakh taken away

Three killed in mishaps

Three persons, including a girl, were killed in accidents in Hoshiarpur district during the past 24 hours.

BSNL add-on scheme
Jalandhar, February 19
Promoting the sales of its landline and WLL connections, the BSNL has introduced an add-on scheme to enable unlimited calls within the Punjab circle of its own network.

2 robberies: Rs 11 lakh taken away

Jalandhar, February 19
A sum of over Rs. 11 lakh was robbed from two cars almost in a similar manner different parts of the city falling under police division number six here today.

Two scooter- borne persons took away Rs. 7.60 lakh contained in a carry -bag after breaking the wheel pane of a car in Model Town market here today evening.

Victim Jagminder Singh of village Variana had just parked his car outside a garment showroom.

He went inside the showroom to make some purchase.Two scooter-borne persons took away the bag containing the money after breaking the wheel pane.

One of the suspects was wearing a helmet, said eyewitnesses. Jagminder Singh had reportedly taken the money from a party after registry of a piece of land.

In another incident, a sum of Rs. 3.5 lakh was robbed from Ram Singh’s car in GTB Nagar after breaking the wheel pane. Ram Singh was working in a petrol pump and had parked his car in GTB Nagar.

Three killed in mishaps

Hoshiarpur, February 19
Three persons, including a girl, were killed in accidents in Hoshiarpur district during the past 24 hours.

According to the police, a bus crushed Sarita (7) of Rajwal village while she was crossing road at Talwara on Sunday.

In another accident, a student of Class XI, Rajiv Kumar of Sector 4, Talwara, was got drowned in the canal of Mukerian Hydel Channel on Saturday. He suddenly fell into the canal while he was going to school. The body was recovered from the gate No. 1 of Canal Power House.

Sukhwinder Singh of Miani succumbed to his injuries on his way to hospital on Sunday. His motorcycle rammed into an electric pole near Santpur Gursaian due to which he was injured.

Suicide

Parveenpal (28) of Jahanpur committed suicide by jumping before a train near the Bhangala railway station on Mondau. The Railway Protection Force has sent the body for postmortem.

Fire

Fire broke out in the shop of Madan Mahajan at Mukerian town on Sunday night.

According to the police, the entire stock in the shop reduced to ashes. Short-circuit in electric wires was stated to be the cause of the fire.

Demand

Mr Tikshan Sud, MLA, has condemned the vandalism at Shiv Temple, Rorian village, on the eve of Mahashivratri.

He criticised the administration for its failure to arrest the culprits.

Two murders solved, three held

In a breakthrough, the district police claimed to have solved two blind murders and nabbed three culprits.

The blind murders of taxi driver Harpreet Singh of Athola village and a migrant halwai Rajinder Dass,alias Raju of Rajab village were solved today, according to SSP Naunihal Singh.

While Raju was found murdered in Mustapur village falling under Kartarpur police station on February 17, Harpreet Singh had been missing since January 21.

With the arrest of two Athola residents Maninder Singh ,alias Mintu and Mukhtiar Singh, it became clear that they had killed him after kidnapping him. Later ,they buried the body in a field in village Sidhwan.

The body was exhumed today in the presence of some police officers and a medical team.

Harpreet Singh’s father Jaswinder reported on January 23 that his son had gone missing two days ago. Subsequently the FIR at Maqsoodan police station was registered.

Harpreet’s car was found abandoned near Mehmadpur village on January 28.

DSP (R) Jagmohan Singh and Kartarpur SHO Gurdev Singh have solved Raju’s murder case within two days with the arrest of Suba Singh, a permanent resident of Gajoli in Alwar district of Rajasthan.

Suba had killed him with a knife to loot Rs. 7100, a mobile set and bicycle.

Kale kachewale strike again

Beware of “kale kachewale” gang as its members are active in the periphery of Jalandhar these days. The gang members do not strike at the houses they want but also do not hesitate to attack the victims in case they resist.

The DSP (Rural II), Mr Jagmohan Singh, admitted that prima facie it seemed the same gang had struck at Tajpur village today which committed robbery in Alipur village yesterday.

He said the gang members were seemingly migrants as they spoke Hindi while communicating.

The gang struck at two different houses in Alipur and Tajpur villages at the same time around three in the morning on Sunday and Monday, respectively. Both the villages fall under the Lambra police station.

The gang members attacked family members of Harbilash in Alipur and injured them when they tried to resist their attempt to rob them of.

However, at Tajpur village they did not try to harm the aged Harbhajan Singh as had not tried to resist them and did whatever they wanted him to do.

The victim was alone at his house when the gang struck. His son along with other family members had gone to his in-laws house. The gang members robbed Harbhajan Singh of gold jewellery and other items.

While an FIR under Section 394 of the IPC was registered regarding the Alipur robbery, another case under Sections 457 and 380 was registered.

Mr Jagmohan Singh said the police was doing its best to bust the gang.

Physiotherapy workshop

A three-day workshop on physiotherapy in intensive-care units was organised at the DAV Institute of Physiotherapy which concluded here today.

Over 100 practicing physiotherapists and students participated in the workshop which was conducted by Dr Rajeev Aggarwal, Senior Physiotherapist from AIIMS.

He trained the participants in identifying the bio-chemical and electro-physiological markers of importance in intensive-care units. They were also trained on latest instruments and techniques being applied by physiotherapists across the world.

Dr Jitendra Sharma, Principal, said since the region had emerged as a prominent centre for medical tourism, the role of physiotherapists had increased tremendously. He said the institute was focusing on rehabilitation and critical care of the patients too.

City girl to attend conclave

Deepti Steefi, a student of St Thomas School, a unit of United Christian Institute, Suranussi, Jalandhar, will attend the 51st United Nations Commission conclave on the status of women.

The conclave will be held from February 26 to March 9 at the UN Headquarters, New York, said Ms A. Eliezer, Director Manager, United Christian Institute.

Travel agent booked

The police on Sunday registered a case against travel agent Avtar Singh for cheating Sukhbir Singh.

The complainant gave Rs 6 lakh to the travel agent for sending him abroad. But the agent neither sent him abroad nor returned his money. 

Security beefed

A red alert was sounded in the region following explosions in the Delhi-Attari special train near Panipat.

Railway sources said here today that security personnel onboard various trains and at railways stations across Punjab were put on high alert.

Different security agencies, including the Punjab Police, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and paramilitary forces, were asked to remain alert.

Checking in trains coming from Jammu was stepped up, the sources said. The patrolling on the Pathankot-Jammu-Udhampur rail section was also intensified.

The security in the Delhi-Lahore and Amritsar-Lahore buses was also tightened.

Meanwhile, the Amritsar-bound 2029 Up Shatabdi Express, 2497 Up Shane-Punjab and 1077 Up Jhelam Express were running behind the schedule due to the incident.

Mortuary van

The Nagar Council, Phagwara, has expressed its helplessness to run a mortuary van and decided to hand it over to the blood bank.

The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the council today. The meeting was presided over by the president, Mr Malkiat Singh Ragbotra.

Mr Ragbotra said the mortuary van was purchased seven years ago and it was being operated without any regular driver. He said the council also passed a resolution to set up a three-member committee, headed by him, to run the affairs regarding the sale of council property or giving it on lease or rent.

The other members of the committee are Mr Pawan Sharma Pappi (Congress) and Rakesh Duggal (BJP).

Austrian troupe performs

The Indo-Austria Friendship Association (a chapter of the IAFFC) in collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum, Embassy of Austria, the Nehru Yuva Kendra, Hoshiarpur, and the BSF organised a programme on the BSF campus, Kharkan, near here, last evening.

The objective of the cultural show was to promote friendship, understanding and international brotherhood.

Radha Anjali, in-charge of the troupe from Austria, along with others performed. Radha Anjali is a renowned Bhartnatyam dancer.

The function was presided over by Mr Alok Sinha, Additional DIG, BSF, and Mr Pritam Singh, SDM, Hoshiarpur, was the guest of honour.

Addressing gathering, Mr Sinha appreciated the efforts of organisers and said it would certainly promote the relations between the two countries.

BSNL add-on scheme

Promoting the sales of its landline and WLL connections, the BSNL has introduced an add-on scheme to enable unlimited calls within the Punjab circle of its own network.

The scheme, “Lage Raho BSNL De Naal”, will be introduced from February 20 for a limited period, said Mr Gautam Lal, officiating General Manager, BSNL, Jalandhar, and Mr Rajiv Goyal, DGM (Marketing), at a press conference here today.

They said the service could be availed by paying Rs 111 per month over and above the existing plan charges.

Mr Lal said the BSNL had further reduced the roaming charges under cellular services from February 15.

The outgoing calls within the visited area would be charged at Rs 1.40 per minute and beyond visited area would be Rs 2.40 per minute. He added that the incoming calls during roaming would be charged Rs 1.75 per minute.

He said there were other promotional schemes for government employees and students. There were nearly 2.6 lakh landline subscribers in Jalandhar vis-a-visa 95 lakh mobile phone subscribers.

Regarding the persistent problem related to connecting from Spice to the BSNL mobile, Mr Goel said the error was not at their end.
