Family members of 29 girl students, who were either killed or injured in a collision between the college bus and the train at an unmanned railway crossing at Gumtala village on November 23, are still awaiting the compensation announced by the state government.

Four students were killed in the mishap. While three belonged to Pasla village, one hailed from Gumtala. Those who received injuries belonged to different villages on the periphery of Noormahl.

The Revenue Minister, Mr Amarjit Samra, had announced that a compensation of Rs 5 lakh would be given to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. Besides, the government would bear treatment expenses of the victims.

But it is a matter of pity that neither any compensation nor grant has been released. Even treatment charges have not been reimbursed.

As a result, grief-stricken parents have to take loans for treatment. The situation is even worse in the case of five students, who are still hospitalised.

“All government promises have proved to be hollow announcements. Nothing concrete has been done by the government or the authorities concerned. Nobody has even bothered to reassure us. We are still awaiting the compensation,” said Mr Hashwar Mohammed, brother of Aashia, who was killed in the mishap.

Mr Bhajan Singh, grandfather of Sharandip Kaur, who received injuries, rued that they had to spent money from their pockets for taking the victims to hospitals.

“Politicians and government officials visited houses of victims for about a week after the accident. Thereafter, nobody bothered to redress our grievances,” said Mr Baljinder Singh, brother of another victim.

“The situation has come to such a pass that a Ludhiana hospital has refused to carry on with the treatment of my daughter for want of money,” said a parent.

Anguished parents and relatives have urged the government to release the compensation.

Deadlock ends; safai karamcharis resume work
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 2
City residents can expect some respite now as safai karamcharis of the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation today decided to end their eight-day strike after they were given assurance by the corporation Commissioner, Mr S.S. Johl, this afternoon.

He assured them that no mohalla committees would “victimise” them. They were also assured that the payments reaching them would come through cheques so that they receive the full amount.

The Commissioner said the staff working on machines resumed work keeping in view the nagar kirtan which will be taken out tomorrow to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh. He said the remaining staff had assured that they would join duty tomorrow.

Before ending the strike, the safai karamcharis gathered in front of the Vigilance office in the district administrative complex where they raised slogans against the civic authorities. They demanded hike in salaries, improving grades and regularisation of their services.

The residents faced a harrowing experience in the last eight days as garbage piled up in every nook and corner. The condition of the Rama Mandi area was also pathetic. It was virtually impossible for any one to pass by colonies and markets with congested roads such as those in Kishanpura, Basti Adda, Ali Mohalla, Kila Mohalla, Kot Kishan Chand and Attari Bazaar.

Some of the posh colonies, including Model Town and Defence Colony, were also in a mess.

SDM yet to start probe against Naib-Tehsildar

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 2
The Phillaur Subdivisional Magistrate (SDM), Mr Jagwinder Singh Grewal, is yet to start an inquiry against Naib-Tehsildar Nirjeet Singh, registry clerk Joga and another government employee Kamaljeet.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC), Mr A. Venu Prasad, had ordered an inquiry on December 29 on a complainant submitted by a Jalandhar-based businessman in which he had alleged that he had been harassed by the Naib-Tehsildar and his staff by withholding the registered deed of his land as he had refused to grease their palms.

When contacted, Mr Venu Prasad said that he was awaiting the report of the inquiry being conducted by the SDM of Phillaur.

On the other hand, Mr Grewal told The Tribune that he had not yet started the inquiry as he had not received the written order from the DC. At the same time, he said the DC had told him on the phone to inquire into the allegations.

The SDM further said that he would hopefully get the written order within a day or two and as soon as he got the order, the inquiry would be started.

Meanwhile, talking to The Tribune, the complainant, Mr Rakesh Goyal, said that he had purchased 30 marlas of land at Dosanjh Khurd village in Goraya and applied for registration of the deed on Wednesday.

The complainant alleged that registry clerk Joga had taken Rs 1,380 in excess as registration fee from him as he had asked him to pay Rs 11,700 as registration fee instead of the actual fee of Rs 10,320. When asked, the clerk said that a receipt would automatically be printed on the back of the deed.

Mr Goyal alleged that when the entire process was completed, another employee, Kamaljeet, told him to pay Rs 14,000 as bribe. He further alleged that when he refused to grease their palms, the Naib-Tehsildar issued directions to his staff not to hand over the documents as he wanted to visit the spot personally.

Terming the allegations as baseless, the Naib-Tehsildar said he had withheld the deed to visit the spot as sometimes actual transactions were done at a much higher price instead of the price shown by the parties.

Mr Goyal said he had received his registered deed and the excess money was also returned to him but he wanted the matter to be probed to expose the staff as to how they harassed law-abiding citizens.

Man ‘cuts brother’s tongue’
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 2
A former Youth Congress leader, Mr Raghubir Singh Lully, alleged that his brother and his wife and two sons cut his tongue after a brawl yesterday.

Lully alleged that his nephew had stolen his mobile phone set. When he asked him to return the mobile phone, he refused to do so. At this, he slapped his nephew.

He further alleged that subsequently his nephew along with his father, mother and brother entered his house. While his two nephews held his arms, his sister-in-law pressed his throat and his brother cut his tongue with a knife, he alleged.

Lully further alleged that the police was not registering an FIR and pressurising him to reach a compromise.

When contacted, the SHO of Division No 5, Mr Balwinder Singh Kahlon, claimed that Lully had cut his tongue himself as he had some dispute with his brother. At the same time, he said the police would register an FIR under Section 324 of the IPC as according to a medio-legal report the wound on his tongue was not grievous.

Lully is reportedly presently on bail in a case of attempt to murder. He was also an accused in a double-murder case. However, later he was acquitted in the case by the court.
