BJP yet to finalise candidates for three seats

Hoshiarpur, December 31
Although the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has announced its candidates for the Shamchaurasi, Garhdiwala, Mahilpur (all reserved) and Tanda for the Assembly elections, its alliance partner, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has yet to finalise its candidates for the Hoshiarpur, Mukerian, Dasuya and Garhshankar seats of its quota.

The decision on sharing the Garhshankar segment is yet to be finalised. Both the BJP and the SAD are staking their claims on this seat. Garhshankar is the home constituency of Mr Avinash Rai Khanna, state BJP chief. Although the BJP has contested unsuccessfully from this segment many times, Mr Khanna lost this seat in 1997 and won it in 2002. Thekedar Surinder Singh Bhulewal Rathan, district president of the SAD had also contested unsuccessfully from this segment in 1997 as an Independent. He secured more than 12,500 votes which helped the BSP candidate, Mr Shingara Ram Sahungra, to retain the seat second time. He defeated the joint candidate of the CPM and the Congress, Mr Darshan Singh Matto.

Mr Khanna, after becoming the MLA, contested the last Lok Sabha elections from the Hoshiarpur constituency by resigning his Assembly and in the byelection from this seat, Mr Love Kumar Goldy, a Congress nominee, defeated Mr Mohinder Pal Mann, joint candidate of the BJP and the SAD by a sizable margin of votes.

On account of winning opposition candidate from this segment, the required development was not done in the backward and kandi areas of this segment. After winning the byelection, Mr Love Kumar Goldy had got implemented various development schemes, including potable water supply, construction of roads, installation of deep tubewells for irrigation, etc.

The Congress has yet to finalise its candidates for all the eight segments of the district. The aspirants for the party ticket have started lobbying for the ticket. The District Congress Committee is a house divided.

Mr Love Kumar Goldy, Mr Pankaj Kirpal, chairman of the Market Committee, Garhshankar, and Mr R.S. Pathania, Director, PSIDC, are aspirants for the Congress tickets from Garhshankar, whereas Mr Rakesh Ahir, Deputy Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, who has resigned from his post, Dr Dilbag Rai, former Senior Medical Officer, Mahilpur, and Ch Ram Rattan vice-president, PPCC, are seeking the ticket from Mahilpur.

Mr Sham Sunder Arora, chairman of the Market Committee, Hoshiarpur, Mr Naresh Thakur, former minister, Mr Kuldip Kumar Nanda, former president, DCC, and Mr Arun Dogra, district president of the Youth Congress, are the main aspirants for the party ticket from Hoshiarpur.

Mr Pawan Kumar Adia, chairman, Improvement Trust, Hoshiarpur, Mr Sohan Singh Bodal and Mr Joginder Nath, both former MLAs, are seeking ticket from Garhdiwala.

Mr Romesh Chander Dogra, who has been continuously elected from Dasuya, is likely to get the party ticket this time also.

In Mukerian, if Dr Kewal Krishan, Speaker, Vidhan Sabha, who had successfully contested six times from this segment, chooses not to contest this time on account of his old age, then his son, Rajnish Babby, who is Excise and Taxation Officer, could jump into the poll fray on the Congress ticket.

Mr Ram Lubhaya, MLA, and Mr Sangat Singh Giljian are the main ticket seekers of the party in Shamchaurasi and Tanda, respectively.
