Akalis want CBI probe into Mohali land scam

The Shiromani Akali Dal, joined by the NDA and the CPI, in the Lok Sabha today demanded a CBI inquiry into the alleged Rs 2000-crore “forest land scam” in Punjab and accused Chief Minister Amarinder Singh of being “hand-in-glove” with the culprits.

Govt forcing farmers to sell land to MNCs, says Badal

Criticising the Congress for forcing poor farmers to sell their land at low price for mega projects, SAD chief Parkash Singh Badal said today the Congress government had collected crores for granting permission for mega projects in the state. Corruption would be a major issue in the elections against the Congress. If voted to power we would cancel all deals of mega projects started in violations of rules and regulations.

10,000 teachers join stir, students’ fate uncertain
Chandigarh, December 5
Fate of over five lakh students studying in 484 government-aided schools in Punjab came under cloud with 10,000 teachers of these schools joining the indefinite strike from today onwards.

Pak national killed, 10 kg heroin seized

The Border Security Force today gunned down one Pakistani national who was trying to smuggle heroin in Indian territory and recovered 10 kg of heroin Mr Kailash Chander Jha, Officiating CO 7 battalion, BSF said today morning at 3:15 am, BSF constable Ram Asre Yadav spotted unusual movement on the Pakistani side near border pillar 192/14, 400 metres from Border outpost Jagdish along the zero line of Indo-Pakistan border.

EC ‘turns down’ SAD request

The Election Commission of India is understood to have told a Shiromani Akali Dal delegation that it cannot interfere in the affairs of the Punjab Government until the Model Code of Conduct is imposed on the state.

NRI asks for BJP ticket from Amritsar

Mr Vikramjit Singh Bajwa, a former chairman of the overseas cell of the Indian National Congress, has approached the president of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), Mr Rajnath Singh, for party ticket to contest from the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat.

SAD leaders meet EC
Chandigarh, December 5
A high-level delegation of Shiromani Akali Dal( SAD), led by its secretary-general, Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, met the Election Commission in Delhi yesterday and demanded disqualification of all 37 Congress MLAs from Punjab, who were holding office of profit. It also demanded that model code of conduct should be imposed in Punjab with immediate effect to stop misuse of government machinery and public money by the ruling Congress.

Office of profit issue: Cong MLAs preparing replies

While the crucial meeting of the Punjab Council of Ministers, to be held on December 7, has been postponed to December 15, many of the Congress MLAs today remained busy in getting their reply prepared with regard to the ‘office of profit’ case. They are supposed to file the reply before the Election Commission by December 8.

Majha Akali Dal comes into being, to counter Badal
Amritsar, December 5
A new Akali Dal is being established here to counter influence of Mr Parkash Singh Badal, President, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), in the Majha belt. Announcing the formation of the Majha Akali Dal Mr Raghbir Singh, Secretary, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) said that a 16-member executive, headed by him had been constituted to draft constitution of the party.

CPI to contest 26 seats: Dayal
Sangrur, December 5
The CPI will contest about 26 seats in the coming Assembly elections in Punjab. The final list of these seats will be approved by the state executive of the CPI at its meeting convened on December 15 in Ludhiana. However, the CPI has so far announced the names of 12 Assembly constituencies, including Budhlada, Payal, Amritsar (West), Lehragaga, Khadoor Sahib, Valtoha, Majitha, Bathinda, Moga, Shatrana and Faridkot.

Activists of the Shiv Sena (Bal Thackrey) of Hoshiarpur district, led by Mr Ranjit Rana, president, Mr Chaman Lal, vice-president, and Mr Ashok Sethi, general secretary, staged a protest march from the Committee Bazar to Clock Tower here today to show their resentment against the attack by activists of the SAD (Amritsar) with sharp-edged weapons on workers of the Shiv Sena at Tarn Taran on December 3.

Mann ‘rejects’ HC order
Chandigarh, December 5
The president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), Mr Simranjit Singh Mann, today said he had refused accept a verdict of the Punjab and Haryana High Court with regard to the release of his passport, that had been impounded earlier.

Rs 85 crore sanctioned for Wagah-Attari checkpost
Chandigarh, December 5
The Union Government has okayed a development plan of Rs 85 crore for infrastructure at the Wagah-Attari checkpost. This will include building of new arrival and departure terminals, which will be air-conditioned and have integrated facilities for customs and immigrations officials. The cargo handling facilities, to enable trade between the two countries, will also be augmented.

GCM of acquitted jawans reconvened

The Army today reconvened the General Court Martial (GCM) at Ferozepore of two Army jawans whom it had acquitted earlier for alleged loss of a carbine from unit premises, to reconsider its findings.
