Cane price in Punjab up by Rs 17
Chandigarh, November 21
The Punjab Government today increased the price of sugarcane by Rs 17 per quintal, raising it to Rs 132 from Rs 115 per quintal. For the growers, there will be a net gain of about Rs 68 crore during the current cane-crushing season.

Pathankot comes on aviation map

Pathankot city was today connected with the rest of country with air. The Pathankot civil airport was formally inaugurated by Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel with which the city would now figure on the aviation map of the country.

Akali-turned-Cong men not to get ticket, says Dullo

Muktsar, November 21
The sitting Akali MLAs and leaders, who had joined the Congress in the recent past, should not hope for a party ticket in the coming elections, said PPCC president Shamsher Singh Dullo. He was addressing mediapersons here today.

NRI to script his family saga
Chandigarh, November 21
His grandfather made history in his own way, and now London-based realtor, Narinder Singh Johal, is out to script his family saga in the form of a Punjabi film. Mr Johal is travelling through Punjab, to collect bits and pieces of information, old pictures and meet acquaintances of his grandfather, Mr Bachint Singh Johal. Mr Bachint Singh was one of the first Indians to migrate to the USA and later to the UK.

Ex-Jathedar fires salvo against Sarna brothers

A former Jathedar of Akal Takht, Bhai Ranjit Singh, today fired a salvo against the Sarna brothers - Mr Harwinder Singh Sarna, president of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), and Mr Parmjit Singh Sarna, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (New Delhi),- and described them a 'turncoat'.

Political parties gear up for Punjab elections

Election to the Municipal Council presidents was held under the supervision of Nabha SDM Ashok Kumar Sikka. Mr Gautum Batish was elected unanimously president and Mr Rajnish Mittal and Mrs Davinder Gauraya as senior vice-presidents. The Congress party has again got control of the MC. A controversy was created in MC when its former president Pawan refused to resign.

Militancy hit families block traffic
Pathankot, November 21
Terrorist victims of the area today blocked traffic on the Pathankot Jammu road near Chakki bridge to press acceptance for their demands. Nearly 100 victims sat on dharna on the road at 12 noon raising slogans against the Punjab and Union Government.

Vigilance team raids MC office
Sangrur, November 21
A vigilance team of the Punjab Urban Local Bodies Department, today raided the office of the Municipal Council (MC) here and recorded statements of the employees of the Municipal Engineer branch of the council, besides the statement of executive officer (EO) of the MC, in connection with the construction of a restaurant building and a petrol station on prime government land near Civil Hospital here.

Acquisition of land opposed

“We will not allow our land acquired for Rs 20 lakh per acre and re-sold for Rs 4 crore by the Improvement Trust,” said Mr Jasbir Singh Padhri, Chairman, Khalra Mission Committee, at a press conference here today.

Misbehaviour with cop: Court acquits Kanjhla

A court here today acquitted Mr Gobind Singh Kanjhla, MLA Sherpur, in a case filed against him for obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions and violation of the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act.

60 farmers freed on bail
Barnala, November 21
About 60 farmers were released on bail by the SDM here. Those released are Mr Nirbhay Singh, state president, Kirti Kisan Union and Mr Tarlochan Singh, district president, Ludhiana Kirti Kisan Union.

ADGP Thind gets bail
Patiala, November 21
Suspended Himachal ADGP Bhupinder Singh Thind was granted regular bail by Additional District and Sessions Judge Bhupinder Singh here today. The judge asked Mr Thind to provide personal bond of Rs 5 lakhs and two sureties of Rs 5 lakhs each.

Rs 2,877 cr to be disbursed as loans

The Cooperatives Minister, Mr Amarjit Singh Samra, said yesterday agricultural loans totalling Rs 2,877 crore would be disbursed by 20 Central cooperative banks in the state, out of which Rs 556 crore had already been disbursed.

Strained relations between Jaswinder Kaur and her husband Head Constable Prabhjinder Singh allegedly compelled her to hire Harpreet Singh of 67 Engineering Regiment, Meerut Cantonment, to kill her husband.

One killed, 5 hurt in mishap
Ropar, November 21
One person was killed while five others sustained injuries when a car collided head on with a mini truck here today. Suresh Kumar, a resident of Hamirpur in Himachal Pardesh, died on the spot while other injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital, Ropar.

Kar sewa fraud case: Police custody for three
Tarn Taran, November 21
Mukhtiar Singh, his wife Harjit Kaur and daughter Kanwaljit Kaur of Bakshiwala (Patiala) village — accused in the multi-crore defrauding case with Dera Kar Sewa Baba Jeewan Singh here were remanded in police custody till November 23. (Baba) Amrik Singh prime accused in the case, is absconding.

EDUCATION

Diploma in automobile engineering introduced
Chandigarh, November 21
The Punjab State Board of Technical Education and Industrial Training has introduced an undergraduate diploma course in automobile engineering in 10 polytechnics of the state. The syllabus for the course was finalised yesterday at the meeting of the academic committee of the board.

The Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib, has been selected by the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) for the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan National Award for best overall performance for 2006.
