Boxer-turned-criminal vows to fight social evils
Amritsar, November 19 Revenge made him form his gang, ‘Boxer Gang’. However, after acquittal from different cases which he described as ‘false’, he decided to launch a drive against drug abuse. One case under the NDPS Act is pending against him . Today, Boxer roped in Padam Shree, Kartar Singh, Rustam-e-Hind, a former Director of Sports to launch a drive against social evils . An ‘awareness rally’ was organised on the Amritsar- Wagah road under the aegis of the ‘Naujawan Shakti Dal Punjab’ (NSDP) to mark the occasion. NSDP chief, Boxer said his party had pledged to fight social evils including dowry. He also warned bureaucracy for being friendly with anti-social elements. The newly formed party also declared a ‘war against drug peddlers and smugglers’. Mr Boxer called upon people help make Punjab a ‘drug-free’ state. Another resolution urged the government to award death penalty to those who killed women for dowry. The NSDP also urged the government to implement its Act to end child labour. A resolution, passed on the occasion called for a drive against female foeticide. Earlier, senior Congress leaders like Mr Sukhjinder Raj Singh Lali Majithia , district president (Rural) attended the function where Mr Boxer had announced the formation of the NSDP to reform the youth, in hooked to drugs . Mr Iqbal Singh Tung, a former personal assistant to Jathedar Akal Takht and now State Vice President , SC/ST Cell of the Punjab Congress Committee and Mr Bikram Dutta , a former Secretary Punjab Youth Congress are active members of the new Party (NSDP) , headed by Mr Boxer. Mr Boxer said he had already helped in de-addicting more than 20 youths and his party would open de-addiction centres. He said a drama team would be formed to prepare skits on the plight of drug addicts and their families. |
Land acquisition policy: govt ‘befooling voters’
Chandigarh, November 19 These clauses had been introduced by the Badal government in its first year in office and still existed, he said. RSS holds social unity meet
Amritsar, November 19 A large number of people from various fields, including socio-religious leaders from all walks of life, participated in the meet. They pledged to uphold the principles of inter-faith brotherhood, social equality, nationalism and swadeshi espoused by ‘guru ji’. The participants also vowed to fight the social evils such female feticide, untouchability and drug addictions. The rally urged the government to decisively fight forces of fundamentalism, disintegration, extremism and terrorism which were posing a serious threat to the national security. The speakers while addressing the rally rued the lack of a consistent national policy on security. Speaking on the occasion they corroborated the concerns shown by ‘Guru ji’ about ever-increasing Bangladeshi infiltration into Assam coupled with missionary movement in the North-East India have proved to be correct. The Naxalite activities in eastern, central and parts of southern India have assumed dangerous proportions, they added. Among those who presented their views were Dr Inderjit Kaur (who spoke on damages being caused to environment by pesticides and need for organic farming) and Mrs Laxmi Kanta Chawla (who spoke on female feticide). |
Ramdev on ‘mission healthy Punjab’
Amritsar, November 19 Cautioning the public about the ill-effects of heavy diet, he said it would be his endeavour to send the message to each and every Punjabi to take up yoga regularly for leading a healthier and holy life. Answering a query of the media on the alarming rise of suicides in the Army and paramilitary forces, Baba Ramdev said he had been invited by the military top brass to workout a distressing doctrine for them so that soldiers living in isolated areas do not succumb to pressures. He said he would soon workout a comprehensive document on this and present it to the military authorities for implementation. He said he would also undertake a series of lectures and counselling at various formations after consultations with the Army. Taking to newsmen after addressing a gathering of senior police and civil officers at the residence of the Deputy Commissioner, he said he would invite senior bureaucrats to his ashram in Hardwar to give them lessons about the physical and mental fitness through yoga and meditation. Interacting with the students and the young children at a special yoga camp, the baba gave them a number of tips for improving lifestyles. He also inaugurated Gaggar Mal physiotherapy centre at Dwarke Dheesh temple in the city. |

Singla lays stones of 2 bridges
Bathinda, November 19 Flaying the Akalis on the refinery issue, he said: “All their claims of bringing the refinery to Punjab are lies.” If they were so sincere about the project why didn’t they start it in the five years of their rule, he wondered. Regarding SAD MP Sukhbir Singh Badal’s charge, he said he had family relations with Anil and Mukesh Ambani and he had exploited the same for the state’s interests. While laying the stone, he said the underbridge being built at a cost of Rs 12 crore would be completed in six months. Later, he also laid the foundation stone of a bridge on the Sirhind canal near the thermal plant. He said it would be constructed in three months. |

Sangrur, November 19 An amount of Rs 14.01 crore on the ROB will be spent by the Railways and Rs 4.16 crore by the Punjab Government. The stipulated date for the completion of this ROB has been fixed as November 6, 2007. |

Judge stresses on quality legal aid
Sangrur, November 19 In his key note address at a seminar on “Law and poverty and role of legal aid in access to social justice”, organised by the District Legal Services Authority, Sangrur, in association with the District Bar Association, Sangrur, at the District Judicial Complex here today, Mr Justice Bhan said law and poverty were interconnected. Denial of social justice had to be done away with as early as possible. Earlier, he inaugurated the seminar. He also inaugurated the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum at the District Judicial Complex here. |
8 police officials shifted
Moga, November 19 According to official sources, those who shifted include Dev Raj from Moga City-1, Varinder Singh Gill from Moga South (City 2), Jaspal Singh Dhami from Nihalsingh Wala and Jasbir Singh to Muktsar. The other four sub-inspectors including Raman Kumar from security, Kashmir Kaur, Tehal Singh from Moga CIA and Ravinder Singh from Baghapurana have been shifted to Ferozepore. When the Rs 5 lakh robbery was committed at Baghapurana bus stand on November 6, DIG Firozepore Range Ishwar Chander had reached to Baghapurana and held a meeting with the SHOs of the police stations and other senior officers of the district. — PTI

5.60 quintal antlers seized
Hoshiarpur, November 19 On a tip-off, officials of the Forest Department raided the house and godowns of Pankaj, who runs herbs shop at Pahari Katra here and was supplying the material to manufacturers of ayurvedic medicines. The godowns sealed in the presence of the Duty Magistrate at 10 p.m. last night. In the morning, a fresh order for removing seals and to search godowns was received from the SDM. The forest department seized 5.60 quintal of antlers said to be of more than 200 deer. Antlers are not available in market due to a ban on the killing of wild animals. It is used as an ingredient in the ayurvedic medicine. According to unofficial sources antlers sell at the rate of Rs 70/- to Rs 80/- a Kg. A case under Sections 9, 39, 50, 51 and 57 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 was registered against Pankaj who is at large. |
Staff of aided schools feel let down by govt
Chandigarh, November 19 "For the past several month, the Government has been promising to issue notification to restore the retirement benefits but there was no progress in this regard. We have been expecting that decision will be announced after the meeting of the Council of Ministers yesterday but we have heard nothing in this regard from the Government", said Mr M.L. Chopra,
Advise, the Punjab Government Recognised Aided School Teachers and other Employees Union. The State Government had granted retirement benefits, including pension to teaching and non-teaching employees, of 484 aided schools on a par with their counterparts in government schools by issuing a notification on February 10,1992. All those employees, who retired earlier or on May 31,2003, are getting those benefits. But after that date, about 1,500 employees have retired but they have not been given any such benefit ", said Mr Chopra. Only last

Mr Chopra said in Patiala there were 13 aided schools and in Ludhiana 22 and in Amritsar 24. Even in a small town like Kharar, there were seven such schools and results of these schools compared to the so-called public and other schools were far better, he added. |
Applicants for PTI job cry foul
Chandigarh, November 19 Satvir Singh from Sardulgarh in Mansa District was shocked to read advertisements in the newspapers today which declared the result. It said the cut-off percentage in the general category for male applicants was 58.91. Satvir’s percentage was 62.65. This was also mentioned on the scrutiny form issued at the scrutiny centre set up at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Mohali. He was issued registration no.17556. Gurpreet Singh, also of Mansa, has a percentage of 60.15. His registration no. is 15475. Paramjit Kaur, Kalalanwali, District Sirsa also has a percentage of 69.80. Her registration number is 817. Parabhjot Kaur of Sirsa district scored 69.05 per cent. Her registration no. is 35134. All three have passed the mandatory requirement of Certificate in Physical Education from Kurukshetra University and also the class XII examination. Education Department officials said applications left out due to the some oversight on part of the department would be scrutinised again. “There is no need to panic,” said a senior official while clarifying that a second merit list would be out soon after fresh scrutiny. The C-DAC will also ask all such candidates, who feel that they have been left out, to fill forms on the website and send in their claims. |
Experts highlight modern uses of laser
Jalandhar, November 19 Dr Ravi A.V. Kumar from the Institute of Plasma Research, Ahmedabad, explained the physics behind the free electron laser and noted these as potential high energy sources. Prof Rupamanjari Ghosh from the School of Physical Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, gave a presentation on the monochromaticity of light. Dr R.S. Johal, organising secretary and physicist from the host college, described the statistical theory based on the Lynden-Bell approach behind the single-pass free electron laser. Prof H.S. Bhatti from Punjabi University, Patiala, gave a talk on the frontier area of nanotechnology. He described the novel physical properties of nano-materials and the great impact on technology that such materials will have in the near future. The valedictory function was presided over by the Principal, Dr Satish K. Kapoor. The organising secretary, Dr Johal, said more than 75 delegates participated in the conference. The convener of the conference, Mr N.S. Khaira, Head, Physics Department, thanked the college management for its encouragement, members of the department for their cooperation and students of the MSc class for commendable voluntary work. |
