Jaipur, October 11
Chris Gayle slammed a blistering century as title holders West Indies advanced to the Super Eight stage of the Champions Trophy in style by crushing a hapless Bangladesh by 10 wickets in a qualifying round clash here tonight.

Left-handed opener Gayle hit an unbeaten 104 to see the defending champions cruise past the meagre Bangladesh target of 162 with more than 13 overs to spare in the day-night encounter at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium.

It was Gayle’s 13th one-day hundred and was studded with 11 fours and three sixes.

The Jamaican, playing in his 145th match, made a composed start before launching into the minnows’ bowling. After reaching the fifty-mark, Gayle waded into the opposition attack, lifting two sixes off Mohammad Rafique in successive overs, and then one more of Aftab Ahmed which disappeared out of the ground.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul played the supporting cast with 52 not out in the unbroken opening stand that rounded a perfect day at office for the defending champions.

The result saw Bangladesh go out of the reckoning while also confirming Sri Lanka’s entry into the second stage of the competition.

The Lankans, like the West Indies, had two wins from as many matches but an upset win by Bangladesh today could have made a three-way tie a possibility.

The Sri Lanka-West Indies match on Saturday in Mumbai will decide the order of the teams after the qualifying stage.

The top team will be slotted with Pakistan, South Africa and New Zealand while the side that finishes second will be bunched with India, Australia and England in the Super Eight.

Earlier, Dwayne Bravo picked up three for 14 to slice through the Bangladesh middle order after Aftab Ahmed and Shahriar Nafees had given them a confident start.

Ahmed cracked a scintillating half-century, only to see his knock go in vain with Bangladesh suffering a typical batting collapse on a featherbed of a track.

The right handed batsman, who turns 21 in a month’s time, played a fearless knock of 59 from 55 balls. The youngster creamed the West Indian pacers, Jerome Taylor in particular, to collect seven fours and two sixes.

But Bangladesh, needing a win to survive in the tournament, slipped from 95 for one and were dismissed for 161 with more than three overs to spare.

Gibbs to be questioned today

New Delhi, October 11
South Africa’s star cricketer Herschelle Gibbs will make himself available to the Delhi Police tomorrow for interrogation over his role in the match- fixing scandal which shook the cricketing world in 2000.

The stylish opener, who had avoided visiting India on two earlier occasions fearing arrest, reached Mumbai this morning.

Gibbs is accompanied by two lawyers who will assist the player during the questioning which is scheduled to be held tomorrow.

A high-level team of Crime Branch officials, led by Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjit Narayan, will grill the batsman on “all aspects” of the scandal, which came to light after Delhi Police tapped a phone conversation of the late South African skipper Hansie Cronje during his team’s tour of India in 2000.

Gibbs is likely to be asked who all had come in contact with him and what kind of match related information had been sought from him, Delhi Police sources said.

Gibbs has already served a six-month ban slapped by South African cricket authorities while his team-mate Nicky Boje, also named in the scandal, is still evading questioning. Both of them had answered a detailed questionnaire put to them by the Delhi Police in 2004.

The South African had sought permission from his Cricket Board that he be allowed to join his team-mates later in India since his lawyers were not available at an earlier date.

The team, which arrived on Sunday, is currently based in Mumbai and will play its first match of the Champions Trophy against New Zealand on October 16. — PTI

BCCI to move ICC’s redressal panel
Revenue losses to local associations

Ahmedabad, October 11
The BCCI will move the ICC’s Disputes Redressal Committee (DRC) over the compensation claims made against the world body by some staging associations of the Champions Trophy.

The associations have complained of revenue losses after being forced to cut down on the crowd capacity to accommodate tournament sponsors.

“We are with the associations on this issue. We will take the matter to the Disputes Redressal Committee of the International Cricket Council,” BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah told PTI. Shah, however, refused to give a timeframe for knocking on the doors of the DRC.

“It is not that we will take the step today itself. We will do whatever is necessary at the appropriate time.” Three of the staging associations, the Gujarat Cricket Association, the Cricket Club of India and PCA Stadium, Mohali, have claimed compensation from ICC for having to set up plush air-conditioned cabins providing vantage viewing to house the sponsors as per a directive from the game’s apex ruling body.

The associations have claimed that the spectator capacity at all the three venues had to be reduced to construct the cabin.

As per tournament rules, the staging associations are entitled to the entire gate receipts and do not have access to any other sources of revenue from the event which is organised by the ICC every two years.

The GCA had complained that it had to curtail the crowd capacity by 750 to construct 12 deluxe cabins that could sit 200 representative of sponsors and other guests of the ICC and claimed a compensation of Rs 1 crore from the ICC for organising five matches of the Champions Trophy.

Shah said the CCI has also put forth a claim for compensation as it was forced to reduce the accommodation at the Brabourne Stadium by 600 to make way for the cabins.

The dispute between GCA and the ICC had reached a flashpoint on the eve of the October 8 qualifying match between Zimbabwe and West Indies after association president Narhari Amin threatened not to handover the cabins to the world body and claimed that his stand had BCCI’s backing.

However, the GCA relented following a directive from the BCCI and handed over the cabins to the ICC. The BCCI had then promised to fight the issue on behalf of the associations.

On the vexed Members’ Participation Agreement, Shah said “we have sent them our viewpoint on the issue in writing. And it is now up to them to respond”.

Shah said the matter could be brought up for discussion during the Champions Trophy matches in Jaipur as BCCI’s vice-president Lalit Modi was based there.

The documents sent by the BCCI to ICC runs into 80 pages. “It is important that the matter is resolved for once and for all. Because with the biennial Champions trophy and the quadrennial World Cup, we will have to face such problems almost every year,” he added.

Asked whether the BCCI had given any instructions to the staging associations on precautionary measures in view of the outbreak of dengue in several states, Shah said, “we don’t need to give any. All the associations know about it, and they are taking the necessary steps”. — PTI

Ensure team’s safety, PCB tells ICC

Karachi, October 11
Pakistan Cricket Board has asked the International Cricket Council to ensure its team’s security in India during the Champions Trophy in the wake of the threats from the Shiv Sena.

A PCB official said the matter of the constant threats issued by the Shiv Sena had been taken up with the ICC as the safety of the players was paramount to the Board.

“We know every time our team has toured India this party has made such threats and tried to disrupt our games. But a threat is a threat and cannot be disregarded,” the official told PTI.

He said the Board was in regular touch with its team management in India, which had conveyed that the players were comfortable and in good spirits despite the threats.

“We remain confident that the home Board and ICC are aware of what needs to be done to keep our players comfortable and safe. We are monitoring the situation,” he said.

The Shiv Sena, which has a stronghold in Mumbai where the Champions Trophy final is scheduled next month, dug up the pitch at the Feroze Shah Kotla ground in Delhi during Pakistan’s Test series in 1999.

Shiv Sena leaders have called on the Indian Government not to allow the Pakistan team to play there in protest over the Mumbai train bombings after police claimed that the ISI in Pakistan was involved in the attacks.

Pakistan has toured India thrice since 1999 and last year played a full Test series without any problems.

Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad, who has travelled to India many times and also went there as coach in 1999, however, said Pakistani players should not be concerned with the threats from Shiv Sena.

“It is nothing new they do it to gain publicity. It happened in 1999 also but we were provided President-level state security and had no problems at all,” Miandad said. — PTI

Indian batsmen make merry

Jaipur, October 11
Virender Sehwag slammed a century off 91 balls for India XI but ended up on the losing side in a warm-up match for the Champions Trophy at the Neerja Modi ground here today.

The opposition comprised a few India players as well after the Indian think tank decided to mix the India XI and RCA XI squads to make the practice game more competitive.

Batting first, India XI scored a strong 296 for 5 in 50 overs but RCA XI, which had Mahendra Singh Dhoni (98) and Suresh Raina (78) in its ranks, overhauled the target, making 299 for 3 in 49.1 overs.

However, if the batting of the stars would have left the team management smiling, the form of Irfan Pathan with the ball is surely to give nightmares to Rahul Dravid and Co.

Pathan was spanked severely by the India XI batsmen, giving away 83 runs in 10 overs. He, however, did no harm to his reputation as a batsman, chipping in with a 49.

Harbhajan Singh also scored a cameo 26 not out to contribute to his side’s 7 wicket win.

Earlier, Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar (39) set off their side to a rollicking start. Sehwag was in more destructive mood though, slamming 13 boundaries and two sixes in his belligerent knock before retiring on 107.

Tendulkar, who struck 5 fours in his 45-ball knock, was caught by Pathan off Munaf Patel, who was the most impressive among the bowlers with figures of 10-1-43-3. — PTI

Nagpur, October 11

Rest, who required 114 for a win this morning completed the formalities for their 18th title win in the championship with more than two days to spare.

Gautam Gambhir unbeaten on 64 alongwith Robin Utthappa’s 18, and later Venugopal Rao (two not out) ensured the Rest’s victory in 68 minutes, after resuming at 45 for no loss this morning.

Overnight batsman skipper Wasim Jaffer did not resume his innings this morning due to a stomach injury sustained the previous evening against pace Praveen Kumar.

The only wicket to fall this morning was that Robin Utthappa, who held out to Avinash Yadav off Praveen Kumar.

Gambhir looked in fine nick, executing three consecutive boundaries of pacemen S Srivastava and eventually settled down to see his side through to victory.

India lose 0-3 to Japan

Bangalore, October 11
India were handed another defeat as defending champions Japan came out 3-0 winners in the AFC Asian Cup football qualifying match here today.

Striker Ryuji Bando scored in the 22nd and 43rd minutes while midfielder Kengo Nakamura enhanced the tally with a solo effort in the 82nd minute to overwhelm India in a one-sided affair.

The result did not alter the qualification equations for the Asian Cup in Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam next year as Japan had already booked their spot from the group along with Saudi Arabia.

India were already out of the running for a berth in the championship having lost their first four qualifiers. Japan had defeated India 6-0 in the league match played at Yokohama in February.

Vishakha eases out Parul
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, October 11
Delhi girl Visakha Sheoran created the biggest upset in the women’s section when she forced third-seeded Parul Goswami to pull out of the fray after she trailed 4-6, 0-2 in a second-round match of the DSCL Open National Tennis Championship at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association deco-turf court here today.

A student of Delhi Public School (Vasant Vihar), Visakha relentlessly attacked Parul’s weak spots to make her sweat and toil under the piercing sun, and conceded the tie after she lost the first set and trailed in the second.

The third seed realised that she stood no chance against the aggressive Delhi lass and wisely opted out like former men’s champion Vinod Sridhar did yesterday. Vishakha’s stamina and flair for the game was quiet evident when she progressed in the girls under-18 event too, at the cost of Jilke Nelord with a 6-0, 6-4 victory. Women’s top seed Isha Lakhani had it easy when she disposed of Vishia Chhetri 6-3, 6-2 while second-seeded Sandhya Nagraj ousted Ragini Vimal 6-2, 6-2 with a ruthless display.

In the men’s singles, the run of Chandigarh’s Tushar Liberhan was halted by Arjun Goutham of Karnataka 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 while eighth seed Sanam K. Singh, also hailing from the City Beautiful, was stunned by Manoj Kumar Sewa of Bengal at 6-4, 6-3. Both Liberhan and Sanam failed to seize their chances and wilted when their attacking and quick-footed opponents mounted pressure.

Other results: Men’s singles: Purav Raja b Pratim Parekh 6-3, 6-0; Ashutosh Singh b Wrik Ganguly 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-4; Vishnu Vardhan b Criram 6-2, 6-0.

Women’s singles: Sonal Phadke b Kurva Shroff 6-3, 1-6, 6-2; Parija Maloo b Esha Sanghi 6-2, 6-2.
