520 examined at medical camp

Ludhiana, October 11
The Department of Community Medicine of the local Christian Medical College and Hospital, in collaboration with the Christian Dental College (CDC), organised a medical, dental and eye check-up camp in the Jamalpur locality, here, yesterday.

A total of 520 patients availed themselves of the free medical services, 55 persons were provided free spectacles while about 140 patients were checked for dental problems.

Minor procedures were carried out on the spot and follow-up advice was also given to the patients. The camp, held under the aegis of Hyderabad-based NGO ‘Operation Blessings, India’, was inaugurated by Mr Manmohan Singh, former Sarpanch of the village.

Dr Anoop Benjamin, Deputy Medical Superintendent, CMCH, Dr Mann, Head of Community Dentistry, CDC, Mr Emmanuel, Chief Operations Officer, CMCH, and Dr Paramita, Senior Lecturer, Department of Community Medicine, CMCH, along with supporting staff attended the camp.

Medical camp

Machhiwara, October 11
The Health Department organised a medical camp at Government Senior Secondary School, Hambowal Bet, here today. Around 520 patients were examined at the camp.

According to Dr Sanjay Kapoor, officiating SMO, Machhiwara, a team of nine doctors examined the patients. Among other doctors were Dr Alka Mittal (gyane), Dr Sukhdev Sharma (eye specialist), Dr Baldeep Singh (physician), Dr Anita Arora (paediatrician), Dr Pardeep Sharma (dental), Dr Balvir Singh (surgeon), Dr Sangeeta Singh (skin specialist) and Dr Avtar Singh (orthopaedics).

The patients were given free medicines. Provision was also made for on-the-spot laboratory test.

The camp was inaugurated by Mr Ishar Singh Meharbaan, a former minister of the state.

DMCH library gets wireless Internet

Ludhiana, October 11
The DMCH yesterday launched a wireless Internet system in its library where faculty members could have access to Internet by way of laptops with wireless networking capability. The facility was inaugurated by Dr Daljit Singh, Principal.

Dr S.C. Chopra, Dean, Academics, said the facility would go a long way in updating academic knowledge of the faculty, which would benefit patients.

He said wireless networks were easy to set up and unobtrusive.

Dr Sanjeev Uppal, convener, computer cell, said the users would have to get their laptops configured by the computer cell. The settings would be hidden to maintain privacy. More areas needed to be explored in the near future with wireless networks, he added.

Among others present on the occasion were Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina, Dr Tej K. Kaul, Dr B.K. Jain, Dr H.S. Bains, Dr Promila Jindal, Dr P.L. Gautam and Dr Puneet Aulakh Pooni.

Green Land School paddlers shine

Students of Green Land Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, who represented the district team in the Punjab Schools State Table Tennis Championship held from October 5 to 9 at Hans Raj Stadium, Jalandhar, gave a sterling performance to help their team win title in the boys under-19 category.

According to Ms Baldeep Pandher, Principal of the school, Abhijeet Singh, Sahil Sharma and Manpreet Singh were members of the title winning squad of the school. Two students of this school — Dharminder and Ankush Joshi — were part of the Ludhiana under-17 team that finished runners-up in the championship.

These students have been selected to represent Punjab in the forthcoming National Schools Table Tennis Tournament to be held at Raipur (Chhattisgarh) from October 14 onwards.

Ludhiana shuttlers honoured

Ludhiana, October 11
Ludhiana shuttlers, who made the city proud by winning medals in the 52nd Punjab State School Games which concluded yesterday, were honoured at a function held at the Shastri Hall of Guru Nanak Sports Complex here today.

In these games, the Ludhiana team won the gold medal in the boys u-17 years’ section while finished second in the boys u-14 years’ category.

Ludhiana lads also secured the bronze medal in the u-19 years’ section. Ludhiana district team (boys u-17), comprising Gurattan Singh, Bhavya Dawar, Gaurish Singla, Anad Tiwari and Daljit, gave stupendous performance to clinch the title.

Similarly, Ludhiana eves gave good account of themselves to bag silver medals in all three age groups — u-14, u-17 and u-19 years.

Mr Gianinder Singh Sandhu, District Sports Officer, Ludhiana, and senior badminton coach under whose guidance and training, these shuttlers excelled, was the chief guest during the felicitation function. Parents of the players and coaches of the Sports Department, Ludhiana were also present on this occasion.

Demonstration on martial art

The Indian Martial Arts Association organised a display of wing-chun-king-fu at Sacred Heart Convent School, Chandigarh road branch, here today.

Sifu Zoltan Toth, president of the Wing-Chun-Kung-Fu Association of Hungary and black belt first degree, gave a display of commando technique of Wing-Chu (beautiful spring time) with his assistant, Lazsio. Around 300 students took part in the event conducted by Zoltan.

Zoltan said the international martial arts body intended to promote the art in India as a self-defence technique. “This art is new for Indian students and the association wants to make it popular among the young generation. This is not a sport, but an art,” he added.
