NSS camp at Ramgarhia College

Ludhiana, October 1
A 10-days NSS camp was inaugurated here yesterday at Ramgarhia Girls College, Miller Ganj, here in association with the Shaheed Memorial International Seva Society. Dewan Jagdish Chander, a veteran freedom fighter from Himachal Pradesh, along with the Principal, Ms Harmit Kaur, and NSS volunteers lit the ceremonial lamp to inaugurate the function. The chief guest was Mr Jagmohan Sharma, president, District Congress Committee.

In his address to the students, he expressed happiness over their involvement in various social activities. The NSS programme officers, Ms Rajeshwarpal Kaur and Ms Inderjit Kaur, addressed the gathering and elaborated on the projects taken up by the National Service Scheme. The volunteers pledged to reach out to the masses by organising various social awareness programmes.

The NSS volunteers and students were motivated by the Principal for playing a vital role in the construction of a strong and healthy nation.

After the felicitation function, Mr Vajinder Singh, general secretary of the society, gave a vote of thanks and elaborated on the 40 years of his involvement in social service.

Students bring laurels

Students of Gujranwal Guru Nanak Khalsa College brought laurels to the college as the students outshone in the recently declared results of the PGDCA of Panjab University.

According to a press statement , out of 17 students who appeared in the examination, four students secured more than 80 per cent marks, three students more than 75 per cent marks and five students secured above 70 per cent marks. Ankita Sood stood first in the college by securing 85.1 per cent marks. Nisha Rani secured 84 per cent marks and Narinder Kaur stood third with 83.2 per cent marks.

Principal Tarlochan Singh encouraged the students and teachers of the department for the excellent results.

Students march to highlight water concern

Amloh, October 1
On a call by the save water organisation, Amloh, scouts and guides of Pearl Model School, Kaulgarh, Government Middle School, Sounti, and Government High School, Waraich, took out a march yesterday. Mrs Sadhu Singh Dharmsot, Parliamentary Secretary Home, Justice and Sainik Welfare, flagged off the march from the grain market. It passed through various bazaars and later merged into a seminar at the Ram Leela Bhavan. The students were carrying banners and placards highlighting the importance of water and the need to conserve it. They also raised slogans like “pani bachao - rukh lagao (save water and plant trees).

The Cane Commissioner, Punjab, Mr Mangal Singh Sandhu, was the chief guest at the seminar. He cautioned people about the consequences of the depleting water table. He said if the government and the people did not take corrective steps land in the state would become barren. Mr Sandhu suggested to the farmers to change the pattern of cropping and replace paddy by sugarcane, as the cultivation of paddy consumed more water. Mr Devinder Singh Mand, Assistant Professor, KVK, highlighted with figures the present situation of water in the state.

Mr Gurdev Singh, vice-president of the District Congress Committee, stressed the need to create awareness among the people on such a vital issue. Mr Jiwan Kumar Puri, vice-chairman of the Market Committee, Mr Paramjit Singh Rupal, a councillor, Mr Jaswinder Pal Singh Grewal, Agriculture Development Officer, and Mr Balbir Singh Jaria, a progressive farmer, spoke on the occasion.

Sixteen progressive farmers of the area were honoured. The president of the save water organisation, Mr Arjan Singh, thanked the gathering.
