Monsoon enters withdrawal phase
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 21
The monsoon today entered its withdrawal phase which is almost three weeks late as compared to previous seasons.

The annual, most-awaited weather phenomenon in the country has started withdrawing from some parts of Punjab and most parts of western Rajasthan. The withdrawal line passes through Ferozepur, Churu, Jodhpur and Barmer.

The Met office said the monsoon usually started withdrawing from north-west India from September 1 onwards, but it remained active for three more weeks this year.

It termed the overall distribution of rainfall in various parts of the country this year as good.

The average rainfall was nine per cent in excess of the normal levels in the week ending today. The national average rainfall for the week was 41.8 mm against the normal level of 38.4 mm.

The country as a whole received near normal rainfall with the seasonal average at 834.8 mm against the normal levels of 843.3 mm, a deficit of just one per cent.

Meanwhile, a low-pressure area, formed over east-central Arabian Sea, was expected to move in the west-northwesterly direction.

A western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir was likely to move slowly eastwards, resulting in scattered rainfall over hilly regions and adjoining plains of northwestern parts of the country over the next two days.
