Rs 2.96-cr land fraud in Dera Bassi

Yet another major land fraud has been detected in Chandigarh’s periphery where the property prices have skyrocketed in the wake of the property boom. In this case, the land belonging to an NRI has allegedly been sold by a Chandigarh resident to the New Delhi-based ATS Infrastructure Limited Housing Company by faking his general power of attorney (GPA).

Rain disrupts power supply
Panchkula, September 21
Power supply to large parts of the city remained suspended for long hours today. Following the heavy downpour in the evening, power lines were snapped, affecting supply to Sectors 6, 11, 12 and 21.

Reverted cops planning to move court
Chandigarh, September 21
After the Chandigarh Police passed orders reverting 130 policemen promoted on ad-hoc basis, at least some of them are considering the feasibility of moving court against the orders.

Three festivals planned to promote tourism, culture
Chandigarh, September 21
At least three major festivals have been planned by the Chandigarh Administration as part of the festival bonanza later this year, according to a press note. It will organise the Chandigarh Heritage Festival (October 7), the Chandigarh Carnival (November 25 and 26) and the Chandigarh New Year Festival (December 26 to January 2) to promote tourism and culture.

Setback to breeding programme

The death of two white tigers in Mahendera Chaudhary Zoological Park, Chhatbir, is a matter of concern for biologists. White tigers are rare animals. Nowadays they are seen only in captivity. So they are considered prized possessions in zoos. The Nandankanan Zoological Park in Orissa is home to nearly 25 white tigers, while the Delhi zoo has six. The Chhatbir zoo had only one pair.

The death of two white tigers at Chhat Bir Zoo on Wednesday remained shrouded in mystery with the post-mortem report samples being sent to Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, and the IVRI, Izatnagar (Bareilly), for a thorough examination.

Ram Lila to be staged at 48 places
Chandigarh, September 21
Ram Lila will be staged at 48 places across the city from tomorrow. Following clearance by the Senior Superintendent of Police, the Deputy Commissioner has granted permission to 48 different organising committees to hold Ram Lilas.

Army displays Siachen equipment
Chandigarh, September 21
A motor-cycle expedition from Siachen to Chandigarh, organised by the Sikh Battalion reached here today. As part of their expedition, a road show was held in Sector 17, where equipment used by soldiers in the world’s highest battlefield was displayed for the public.

Chandumajra ready for poll pact

The third front being constituted under the leadership of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Longowal) will play a deciding role in the formation of the next government in Punjab, SAD (Longowal), Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, said here yesterday.

Rally by CITU against UPA govt policies

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a rally in front of the gate of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking. The rally was organised as part of a nationwide mobilisation campaign for the one-day nationwide strike on December 14 against the “anti- people” economic policies of the UPA government.

Nepali woman wards off assailant
Mohali, September 21
A young Nepali woman put up a brave resistance to ward off an alleged attempt of a man to outrage her modesty here last night. The victim, Kamla, who lives in the second floor accommodation in an industrial unit in Phase VII, got injured while trying to save herself. She had injury marks on her neck and hands.

Clerk caught taking bribe
Chandigarh, September 21
Continuing its campaign against corrupt government officials, the UT Vigilance Department today nabbed an upper divisional clerk posted in the Regional Passport Office while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3,500.

Stolen car recovered, accused remanded
Chandigarh, September 21
The local police has arrested a Una resident on charges of displaying a fake registration number on his car. Sources in the Sector 36 police station said the man was arrested on Wednesday. The verification of the documents of the car revealed that it was stolen from New Delhi.

515 cartons of liquor seized
Chandigarh, September 21
The Operations Cell of the Chandigarh Police today arrested two persons on the allegations of smuggling a truck load of liquor from the city to Gujarat. The police said the estimated value of the liquor could be around Rs 10 lakh.

Bid to outrage modesty of colleague
Panchkula, September 21
Thirtysix-year-old Pankaj Sharma, a water carrier in the State Vigilance Bureau, was today booked for assaulting, threatening and attempting to outrage the modesty of an employee of the same department.

Two held for kidnapping minor sisters
Mohali, September 21
The police today arrested two persons on charges of kidnapping two minor girls from Mataur village some days ago. The arrested persons are Raj Kumar and Naresh Kumar both hailing from Bihar. They will be produced in a court tomorrow. According to the police, the arrested persons had taken away 15-year-old and 13-year-old girls by promising them marriage.

1 more held for Varun’s murder
Panchkula, September 21
The police today arrested Arshad Ahmed, a resident of Sector 11, in connection with the Varun murder case. With his arrest, the police have two accused in their custody. During interrogation, Manish Puri, the cable operator who surrendered earlier, narrated the sequence of events as mentioned in the FIR.

Bid to loot liquor shop
Lalru, September 21
An employee of a liquor shop at Kurli, near here, was injured when three unidentified persons fired at him following a bid to loot the shop in the wee hours of today.

Art works displayed on International Peace Day
Chandigarh, September 21
An art workshop, on-the-spot painting and collage making competitions, seminar and display of art works by foreign delegates marked the celebrations of International Peace Day in the city today. The series of events organised by the Educare India, an NGO at the Chandigarh Art Gallery and Museum with the theme “Unity in Diversity : Be a Global Citizen” were aimed at disseminating the message of peace and international brotherhood.

Doctors’ body to certify gastro surgeons
Chandigarh, September 21
The Indian Association of Gastro Endo Surgeons (IAGES) will now begin certifying individual surgeons and laparoscopic centers in the field of laparoscopy. It will also recommend surgical curriculum in laparoscopic surgery to the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Chandigarhians more aware of AIDS
Chandigarh, September 21
City residents are among the most aware persons in the country when it comes to knowledge about HIV and AIDS. A comparative analysis of data collected by the UT AIDS Control Society and all-India baseline figures have shown that 94 per cent of the 600 persons interviewed in the city had a fairly good idea about the disease, its causes, symptoms and ramifications and prevention.

‘Every third 30-plus city resident has hypertension’
Chandigarh, September 21
Every third city resident and every fourth person belonging to slums and rural areas of Haryana aged 30 years and above suffers from hypertension. Tobacco use in the same areas and age group has led to risk factors for cardio-vascular diseases, according to Dr K.K. Talwar, Director of the PGI.

150 to attend programme on transfusion medicine
Chandigarh, September 21
The Department of Transfusion Medicine, PGIMER, will organise its ‘Xth Continuing Medical Education” programme in transfusion medicine on Saturday and Monday. About 150 delegates from the region are expected to attend the programme and interact with faculty of national eminence. Dr KK Talwar, Director of the PGIMER, will inaugurate the programme.
