Non-govt colleges condemn DPI’s audit proposal
Ludhiana, September 10 Addressing a meeting of the representatives of non-govt colleges here today, Mr Satish Chander Sanwalka, President of the Federation of Non-Govt Colleges Managements said the members have condemned the DPI’s move
regarding audit of all accounts of the colleges. He said, “We are against it. The federation had filed a writ in the High Court regarding the release of grant-in-aid arrears and the state government had been asked to issue the same till September 19, 2006. If we do not receive any communication till that date, we will again approach the courts for necessary action”. Mr Rajinder Singh Chinna, the vice-president of the federation, while speaking on the issue said the proposal for audit of all accounts , including that of self-financed courses was not acceptable to them. “We will fight against the move but at the same time we are committed to our own cause of providing quality education alongwith our social and religious objectives. We will fight for our demands. We have been facing several problems in the absence of sanction of new posts by the DPI for the past many years”. The representatives of 40 non-government colleges were of the view that their colleges should be permitted to hire new teachers on contract basis. So that the working of the colleges did not suffer. |
Students get tips on yoga at NSS camp

Ludhiana, September 10 Prof P.S. Grewal welcomed the participants. Prof Parvin Gupta gave an introduction about NSS activities. During the service session, volunteers took the assignment of beautification of college premises. College Principal Dr Malkiat Singh encouraged the students to participate in philanthropic activities and social service. Prof Harblas Heera gave the vote of thanks. Senior group leader Naresh Bhardwaj conducted the programme. Volunteers Upneet Khera, Rohit Kumar, Parbhat Jain, Mandeep, Monika, Nisha, Jasbir Kaur, Sherry and Renu performed their duty as group leaders. Inter-college debate The Commerce Department of Khalsa College for Women here organised an inter-college debate yesterday with an aim to promote interaction and provide a platform for information sharing among various colleges. Teams from seven colleges of the city participated. The debate was held on: “Malls — a boon or bare to economy”, “Motivation — a carrot or stick”, “Entrepreurship — innovation or improvisation” and “Corporate laws — to be imbibed or manipulated”. Prof R.L. Behl, senior lecturer in Arya College, Prof Ashwani Bhalla, senior lecturer in Government College for Boys, and Surita Bhagat from Khalsa College were the adjudicators. First prize was won by Navneet Kaur (GNKCW), second by Harneet Sehgal (GCW) and third by Venu Sharma (KCW). The guests exhorted students to actively respond to their surroundings as society was undergoing transformation. Hence, change was imperative, they added. Principal Dr Varinder K. She said such inter-college interactions provided a platform for sharing information as well as helping students evaluate their standing with regards to their peers in other institutes. Students of Green Grove Public School (Senior Secondary), Mohanpur Khanna, secured first position in the regional-level CBSE Science Exhibition, which was held at APJ School, Jalandhar recently. The school team comprised Harpreet Singh (Class X), Sanpreet Singh (Class X), Harneet Kaur Hara (Class X), Puneetjot Kaur (Class IX) and Amenpal Kaur (Class IX) and was guided by Sanjay Katoch (in-charge Physics Department) and Ruchi Sablok (in-charge of biochemistry). Their working model on “Mobile control electrical appliances” drew appreciation from visitors and was adjudged best model among the 150 models put on display by students of around 100 schools representing states like Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. The team brought laurels not only to their school but the entire state by winning the coveted first position and qualifying for the national-level competition. School Principal Suzy George congratulated the team. |

Bhaini Baringa (Ahmedgarh), September 10 Sandeep Kaur of Dasmesh Khalsa School, Heran village, bagged first prize in quiz contest, while Jaspreet Singh of SGG School Goindwal and Manpreet Kaur of Government High School, Barmi, retained the second and the third prizes, respectively. In chart making competition, Harminder Kaur of Hissowal stood first and Guramrit Singh of Dasmesh School Tahliana Sahib and Sanpreet of Heran village bagged next two positions. Jasbir of the host school stood first in teaching aids competition. Jyoti Kaur of Shaheed Gurinderjit Government Senior Secondary School, Bassian, Tarsem Singh of GSSS, Bhaini Baringa, and Ajai Kumar of Government Middle School, Raikot, bagged first three prizes in elementary theme. In rural secondary, Jugraj Singh of Dasmesh Khalsa School, Heran, stood first and Rajpreet Kaur of the host school stood second. Annt Pal Kaur of SGG Senior Secondary School Goindwal was declared the best speaker. Jasdeep Kaur of Tahliana, Apurvi Tangri of Tagore Model School, Raikot, and Manpreet Singh of the host school bagged first three prizes in the theme “Nutrition and agriculture”. Amritpal Singh of the local school, Gurpreet Singh of Tahliana Sahib and Jasandeep Kaur of Tagore Modern Senior Secondary School, Rai, won top positions in the theme “Industry and environment”. Ravneet Singh of Tagore Modern School, Jatinder Singh of the host school and Prabhjot Kaur of Dasmesh Public School, Tahliana Sahib, were winners in senior section. |
‘Dukhdey Kaleeray’ mocks the land of dreams
Ludhiana, September 10 The play was acknowledged and appreciated by the audience. It inculcated a sense of confidence among the youth who must not think that the promised land is only abroad. The play also tries to present a realistic picture that everything is not as rosy as it is made out to be in foreign lands. |
Art lovers throng exhibition
Ludhiana, September 10 The organisers demonstrated various techniques like collage making, greeting card designing, fabric painting, oil painting etc. Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, Mr Sharma emphasised there was a desperate need to spread creative art in the younger generation. Besides, it will also generate commercial avenues for creative persons, he added. Ms Karuna Mohindra said the main aim of organising the workshop was to provide a platform to young and budding artists to learn from and interact with senior artists. "TAC academy of fine arts is conducting such workshops and exhibitions on a regular basis,” she added. More than 60 participants, including students and teachers, from various schools and colleges participated in the workshop. Meanwhile, an exhibition of paintings by a young artist Bharti Sharma was also inaugurated on this occasion today. It was a display of rare techniques in different mediums and styles. She had also created some beautiful works with the use of comb and knife. |

10 pc people suffer from heart diseases: cardiologist
Ludhiana, September 10 This was stated by Dr G.S. Wander, chief cardiologist, Hero DMC Heart Institute, while addressing a seminar on cardiology, organised by the National Integrated Medical Association here last evening. Besides a large number of association doctors, the seminar was attended by medical professionals and specialists in the field of cardiology. Dr Wander remarked that with increasing incidence of coronary artery diseases, the number of heart failures was on the rise. He discussed in detail the role of new medications like “beta-blockers” and ACE inhibitors in the management of cardiac conditions. The contribution of bi-ventricular pacemakers in increasing the longevity of life in cases of CAD and heart failures was also highlighted in the lecture. Focusing on cardio-pulmonary resuscitation support, Dr Vivek Gupta, an anesthetist at the Hero institute, dwelt upon different aspects of basic cardiac life support and advanced cardiac life-support procedures, which could, at times, prove to be a matter of life or death for critically ill patients. He explained that in the former procedure, the medical professionals had to support the patient without the help of any equipment while in the latter, the cardio-pulmonary care units took care of the patients. Earlier, welcoming the guest speakers, Dr Surendra Gupta, secretary of the association, stressed upon the members to keep themselves updated with latest research in the field of medicine and surgery in both the modern and ayurvedic systems of medicine. “Cardiology being the most important segment of medical care, has seen a lot of advances in the recent years. Innovative high accuracy human-operated and robot-operated surgical procedures have changed the entire scenario of cardiac care the world over,” he observed. Dr Rajesh Thapar, president of the association, along with other functionaries, including Dr Pradip Nagrath, Dr K.K. Sharma, Dr Raj Kumar Sharma, Dr P.P. Singh, Dr Ramesh Mohan Madan, Dr R. Vatsyayan, Dr M.S. Dhaliwal, Dr Anil Kapoor and Dr Navneet Saggar, felicitated the distinguished faculty at the seminar. |

Cricket tri-series live on Zee Sports
Ludhiana, September 10 According to a press release issued today by Zee Sports, each team will play the other two teams twice in the league phase before the top two teams lock horns in the final slated for September 24. All matches will be day and night matches. Zee Sports will conduct its studio show, Cricket Cafe, live from the stadium during the course of the series. The channel will also handle the production of the matches in Kuala Lumpur with its commentary panel which includes Tony Greig, Kapil Dev, Ian Bishop, Arun Lal, L Sivaramakrishnan, Jeff Thomson and Justin Langar. India play their first match on September 14 against the West Indies. |
