National Nutrition Week begins
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, September 2
Various events will be held during the course of the National Nutrition Week being celebrated by the Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) from September 1-7 to make the youth and children aware about the effect of nutrition on their health.

Students from GRD Academy and Partap Public School participated in the inaugural function yesterday. Dr D.S. Uppal, head, TOT Division, and Dr S.K. Nanda, Project Coordinator, CIPHET, elaborated the importance of balanced diet in daily life. Outward healthy appearance is no guarantee against “hidden hunger” or deficiency of vitamins and minerals, they added.

They also advised the younger generation and schoolchildren to avoid the use of junk foods and to eat balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals. In India, importance is given to the nutrition of the male child only, which is not desirable since girls need more nutrition as compared to boys, they pointed out.

A quiz competition was also conducted for the students on food nutrition. The winners from GRD Academy were Paras Bhandari (first), Heena Sharma and Sandeep Kaur (second) and Apurva (third). Similarly, Shiana Prabhakar (first), Bhupinder Kaur (second) and Shamsher Singh (third) were from Partap Public School.

A lecture on food nutrition, its importance and making right food choice by Dr (Ms) Mridula D, was the highlight of today’s events. She emphasised the nutritional composition of various foods, impact on health and its benefits.

The CIPHET facility and its working was shown and explained to the students by Dr D.M. Kadam, Dr D.K. Bharti and Dr D. Dhingra.

The event, the brain child of CIPHET Director Dr R.I. Patil, is being organised by Dr D.S. Uppal and sponsored by the SBI, PAU branch.

Doctor expresses concern over growing AIDS menace
Our Correspondent

Mandi Ahmedgarh, September 2
Showing concern over disquieting revelations made at the XVI International AIDS Conference held at Toronto, Canada recently about India having the largest number of AIDS and HIV positive patients in the world, Dr Sita Ram Shahi, a local Ayurvedic doctor has called upon leaders of various social and medical organisations of the area to join hands with him in fight against the dreaded decease.

The conference attended by more than 24,000 delegates from 170 countries, including doctors, scientists, sex workers and HIV positive persons has also recognised complimentary therapeutic role of the Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Accupuncture, Naturopathy and Yoga.

While talking to the Ludhiana Tribune after returning from the conference, Dr Shahi said he was disturbed over the disclosure that the India, a land of saints and prophets who preached ethics of pious life, was host to 53 lakh AIDS and HIV positive patients.

“It is not only the question of lives of 53 lakh AIDS and HIV persons, we have to protect the rest of the nation for whom they could serve as huge reservoir,” felt Dr Shahi.

It was more alarming that 16 lakh of 53 lakh HIV positive Indians were women. With ever swelling number of HIV positives, India has exceeded South Asia (55 lakh), Niziria (29), Zambia (17 lakh) and Tanzania (14 lakh) during the recent past.

Urging leaders of social organisations to recognise the need of creating awareness among vulnerable sections of society, Dr Shahi said prevention, cure, care and eradication of stigma could be achieved with collective efforts.

Dr Shahi said the Canadian AIDS Treatment and Information Exchange Society had recognised Ayurveda as one of the complimentary therapeutic systems for treatment of the dreaded decease.
