12 students hurt in police action
Srinagar, August 10 Students of Amar Singh College, Wazirbagh, were protesting against the shooting of Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, a final-year student of the college, by the CRPF yesterday. A cameraman of a news channel also received injuries in the melee. The injured were taken to the SMHS hospital for treatment where most were discharged after first aid. Earlier, the students took out a protest march from the college premises to the Residency road, raising slogans against the government and the CRPF. Students of Sri Pratap Memorial College also staged a protest on the college premises and demanded punishment for the “guilty”. The CRPF has claimed that Sheikh was attempting to lob a grenade at its personnel at Dalgate yesterday, but residents and eyewitnesses alleged he was shot dead in “cold blood” after an altercation with jawans of the force. Three CRPF personnel were given one rank promotion and a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh for gunning him down.

2,000 evacuated by Army
Jammu, August 10 Many parts of Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh were reeling under floods due to unprecedented rains that continued for eight days and also because of cloudbursts. A spokesman of the Army said here today that relief camps had been established in Leh, Angling, Phyang, Spituk, Darchik and Chuchuit. Food and medical aid were being provided to about 3,000 people in the hinterland of Dikshni, Hunder, Khalsar, Warshi, Darchik Ganasok, Achinathang, Batalik, Biamah and Slimo. Foot patrols had been launched in several other areas to provide food, water and medicines to the people in isolated and cut-off areas. The spokesman said that over a tonne of food material had been airdropped and some tourists, including foreigners, were evacuated in helicopters. The tourists were marooned in the Zanskar valley along Markha and Sara villages. He said that unprecedented rains lashed most parts of Ladakh for eight days from August 1 resulting in serious breakdown of communication and transportation. The bridge connecting the road from Shanti Stupa to Karzu Palace was badly damaged resulting in the closure of traffic. The bridge connecting Alings village on the western side of Leh airport also collapsed. The Army deployed its men and machines to divert the waters, thus averting a major catastrophe. |
