19 Punjabi youths stranded in Morocco, Jordan
Jalandhar, June 18 Their kin, the families added, claimed that the figure of people stranded in these Arab countries was much higher. The families said the youths were travelling on fake papers arranged by travel agents after charging lakhs of rupees. Now, the families claimed that they were again paying the agents, this time to get their kin back. They said the anxiety increased every time the youths on phone recounted how their legs were swollen with burns from cigarette butts and how tough it was to get a square meal. In a press conference organised by the Lok Bhalai Party, the mother of one Ravinder Singh, Rajinder Kaur, the wife of one Ranjit Singh, Balwinder Kaur, the mother of one Avtar Singh, Surjit Kaur, and sister of one Manjit Singh, Kulwinder Kaur, with all their kin stranded in alien lands, with suffused eyes, narrated their woes. National President of the party, Mr Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, said the youths were often brainwashed by travel agents and even by their kin living abroad. “They make these youths believe what is untrue,” he said. Kulwinder Kaur said Manjit Singh, her only brother, and her brother-in-law were stuck in Morocco for more than one-and-a-half-years and were unable to return. “While my brother-in-law is untraceable, my brother calls after long gaps only to cry about his virtual imprisonment with no passport,” she said. She claimed that the sub-agents had imprisoned him and he was unable to even move around freely. She alleged that even the Passport Office in Jalandhar was not providing them with any certificate to prove that her brother had a valid passport. The story is more or less the same with others too—Kuldeep Singh Rahi from Rishi Nagar, Jaslok Singh from Maini village in Hoshiarpur, Jagir Singh from Kadian village in Batala and Ram Krishan from Mehatpur village in Nakodar. Their families alleged that fake travel agents had taken from them nearly Rs 6 to Rs 9 lakh and sent their sons to Morocco. The youths were now stranded there with no clothes, food or passport, the families alleged. They said the accomplices of these travel agents on foreign shores imprison the youths. They called for government intervention. |
Residential buildings develop cracks
Phagwara, June 18 The inhabitants of three most-effected houses had to vacate their residence buildings fearing their collapse. When The Tribune visited the affected area, the people were seen in a state of shock. Most of the residents were expressing apprehensions that any building could collapse any time. The matter was brought to the notice of the local MLA Joginder Singh Mann early this morning. Mr Mann, Phagwara SDM, Mr Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, Nagar Council President, Mr Malkiat Singh Ragbotra and councillor Mr Pawan Sharma Pappi could visit the affected area in the afternoon only. The residents of the area demanded immediate compensation to the affected residents for the damages to their houses. They also demanded a high-level probe in this connection to verify whether the incident was related with the negligent working of the Phagwara Nagar Council. Meanwhile, the SDM, Mr Dhaliwal has instructed the council officials to give a detailed report to him by Monday. Mr Dhaliwal assured the residents free, fair and transparent enquiry in this connection and said that stern action would be taken against erring officials of the council. However, the residents claimed that the leaked water still continued to seep into the foundations of several other houses and shops in the area. |
Tomatoes still costly
Phagwara, June 18 While the prices in retail market vary from Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg, the wholesale price of tomatoes is between Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kg. “The wholesale prices are still reasonable, as for retail, we don’t have any control on that because it involves extra transportation charges and labour charges,” said a Market Committee official in Phagwara. The prices will come down once the fresh stock from the local farmers reaches the market. This might take one to three weeks’ time. Till then, the prices will continue to soar. “It’s already costing Rs 20 per kg in the retail market. Once transportation expenditure and the cost of rotten quantity is included, the price comes to somewhere around Rs 30 a kg,” Jaspreet Singh, a commission agent, told The Tribune. |
