Jalandhar, May 30
Vice-Chairman of the All India SC/ST Commission, Mr Faqir Singh Vaghela, on a tour of the Jalandhar district, told mediapersons today that he did not come across many cases of atrocities on the Dalits.

Mr Vaghela accompanied by other officials of the Commission also paid a visit to the Bhargo Camp where the Municipal Corporation had recently undertaken an demolition drive. He said he was investigating the alleged cases of atrocities on the residents of the locality during anti-encroachment drive.

He asserted that no official would be spared in case he or she was found guilty in any such incident.

Appealing to the residents of the Bhargo Camp and members of the Sangharsh Committee formed by them to submit details about their grievances to the commission at the earliest, the Vice-President of the SC/ST Commission assured that a notice would be issued to the Corporation and suitable action would subsequently be taken into the matter.

“Nobody, whosoever he might be, will be spared by the Commission if he or she is found guilty during the investigation. We have observed that Corporation did not use requisite sensitivity towards the residents, who had been living in the area for more than 50 years,” Mr Vaghela said.

He also criticised the Municipal Corporation authorities for not taking appropriate action against those “influential” people, who were owners of high-rise buildings and might have violated norms in the process erecting such buildings.

Mr Vaghela also held a meeting with top officials, including the Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, and the SSP, Mr Ishwar Singh.

Earlier, a strong protest by residents of the Bhargo Camp area against the Mayor, Mr Surinder Mahey, forced him to leave the venue of the meeting between Mr Vaghela and the residents at Budhamal Park in the locality.

Slogan-shouting residents alleged that they had to suffer huge losses due to the demolition drive and that the Mayor was responsible for it.

General Secretary of Punjab BJP, Mr Vijay Sampla, former MLA, Mr Bhagat Chunni Lal, BJP SC Morcha’s Mr Kimti Bhgat, President of the BJP’s district unit, Mr Shiv Dayal Chugh, and State President of the SC Morcha, Mr Rajesh Bahga, also came in support of the residents.

Jalandhar, May 30
Chief of the Punjab Mahila Congress and Minister for Social Welfare, Ms Gurkanwal Kaur, and a senior Mahila Congress leader, Ms Kanwaljit Multani, whose removal from the organisation has recently been revoked by the chief of the All India Mahila Congress, entered into long wordy duals, all in the presence of a central observer of the organisation, Ms Meera Singh, here today.

Ms Multani, who is supported by Congress leader, Mr Anil Dutta, also the Chairman of the Jalandhar Central Cooperative Bank, created a sensation when she alleged that she was slapped by Ms Gurkanwal Kaur in presence of Ms Meera Singh, who had come here to attend the Mahila Congress meeting from Delhi.

Ms Gurkanwal Kaur, denying that any such outrageous thing ever happened, instead levelled counter allegations against Ms Multani. She claimed that Ms Multani was “removed” from the post for her “inability to perform”.

The Minister also claimed that Ms Multani had not been reinstated as the district Mahila Congress chief, as she (Ms Gurkanwal Kaur) had not received any communication from the party High Command regarding the revocation of her removal. “I repent that I made her sit at a responsible position,” Ms Gurkanwal Kaur said.

On the other hand, Ms Multani got to the extent of claiming that she feared a threat to her life from Ms Gurkanwal Kaur. “I need security. Anything can happen to me any moment, since I have stood up against a mighty person,” she said.

President of the Punjab Youth Congress (PYC), Mr Raminder Awla, today said that the PYC would work as the frontal party of the Congress in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.

Khaira, Bibi fight over uprooting of stone

Tribune News Service

Bholath (Kapurthala), May 30
The bickering between the political rivals from Bholath constituency, Mr Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Bibi Jagir Kaur, erupted once again when a foundation stone laid by the Akali leader at the nearby Miani Bhagupuria village was uprooted by the district administration officials here today.

According to information, Mr Inderdev Singh, Tehsildar, Bholath, accompanied by Mr Daljit Singh, SDO, PWD, reached the spot with labour and police force in the evening and took away the foundation stone laid by Bibi Jagir Kaur yesterday for the construction of a road between Miani Bhagupuria village and Mand Kulla village that would cost Rs 9 lakh.

Reacting sharply against the incident, Bibi Jagir Kaur said this was an “act of murder of democracy and was an insult” to the people’s representative in the assembly. “I am the sitting MLA from the area. But the foundation stone laid by me was uprooted and taken away by the government officials,” rued Bibi Jagir Kaur.

On the other hand, Mr Sukhpal Singh Khaira, when contacted, said that he had got a grant of Rs 15.67 lakh for Miani Bhagupuria village for the construction of toilets and a dharmshala for Dalits. Besides, he added, he would also work on a water supply scheme worth Rs 31 lakh. He further claimed that the residents of the village wanted to honour him today for this.

“Panicked by my popularity in the area, Bibi Jagir Kaur laid the foundation stone on a road, where the repair work was to be started from June 1 just a day before I was to be honoured by the villagers,” Mr Khiara alleged, adding that, “how can Bibi take the credit for the developmental works being carried out by the Congress in the constituency?”

Meanwhile, Mr Daljit Singh, SDO, PWD, when contacted, said that his department had no role in demolishing the foundation stone laid by Bibi Jagir Kaur, even as Mr Inderdev Singh, Tehsildar, said that he had got the foundation stone uprooted because the PWD department objected to the raising of the foundation stone on their land.
