Pak orders renovation of historic gurdwara
Ludhiana, May 30
In a landmark order issued at the instance of the West Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parvez Elahi, the Evacuee Trust Property Board, Lahore, has decided to repair and renovate the historic gurdwara, Tapasthan Guru Nanak Dev, built by Hindus and Sikhs of Nilibar region in Kothiwal Chak No: 317EB, tehsil Burewala, district Vehari, about 225 km south of Lahore.

Jeweller detained, market closed in protest

The move of the city police to recover nearly 35 tolas of gold jewellery stolen from the house of jeweller Jaswant Rai who was murdered last year, from a goldsmith running a shop in Sarafa Bazaar here this morning evoked protests from the Ludhiana Jewellers Association.

The unprecedented boom in the property prices has led to a substantial number of litigations in Ludhiana. Since there is usually a considerable time gap between the settlement of a deal and the final transfer and registration, a number of sellers have been found backing out as they get better offers in the meanwhile.

Punjab to buy Rs 3,000 crore more power
Ludhiana, May 30
Parliamentary Secretary for Power and Housing Surinder Dawar has claimed that to meet the higher demands for power in the coming paddy season the state government has decided to purchase power worth Rs 3,000 crore from other states. The farmers will get eight hours of uninterrupted power supply from June 10.

Land allotment to club challenged
Ludhiana, May 30
Residents of Rajguru Nagar here have challenged the allotment of 2000 square yards of land to the Rotary Club (North) by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust at allegedly throwaway rate by changing the land use and have sought a permanent stay order.

16 cows die due to acidosis
Machhiwara, May 30
At least 16 cows in the local Baba Bhagti Nath Gaushala died due to acidosis today. More than six cows are still stated to be in a very serious condition. Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, the president of the Gaushala Managing Committee, Mr Sushil Luthra, said this happened due to excess intake of chapatis by the cows.

34-year-old heart patient needs help
Ludhiana, May 30
Surjit Singh (34), a resident of Hassanpur village in this district, is suffering from serious rheumatic heart disease and needs replacement of heart valve. The patient, admitted to Hero DMC Heart Institute here, has a damaged heart valve, which is causing serious problems due to leakage of blood.

Senior citizens demand rent-free telephones
Ludhiana, May 30
The Northern Railway Pensioners Welfare Association has called upon the Union Telecommunication Minister, Mr Daya Nidhi Maran, to introduce a special scheme under which land line telephones were provided to the senior citizens without any monthly rental and no free calls.

Conman held
Ludhiana, May 30
The police has nabbed a conman who allegedly managed to fleece a number of persons by giving them plain paper in lieu of thousands of rupees. Inspector Gursewak Singh Brar, SHO of the police station, told mediapersons that the nabbed suspect, Munna and his absconding accomplice, Ashok, were fleecing people, especially illiterate migrants.

Coloniser attacked
Ludhiana, May 30
A group of about 15 persons attacked a coloniser in Khanna today this afternoon on the Khanna-Amloh road and made an abortive bid to grab his land. The victim, Ravinder Singh, was admitted to Civil Hospital with multiple injures. The police registered a case and further investigations were on.

Delay in VAT refunds condemned

Local industry has condemned the delay in the repayment of VAT refunds by the Excise and Taxation Department. According to industrialists, the department is refusing or delaying payments on the basis of "unconvincing" reasons like non-availability of records of claimants with them.
