DMCH remembers Florence Nightingale

Ludhiana, May 16
As part of a week-long celebrations to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, “The Lady with Lamp”, staff and students of the College of Nursing of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) held a function at Dumra Auditorium here yesterday. The function was inaugurated by the chief guest, Mr Deepak Dumra. A welcome dance was presented by the second year nursing students of GNM.

Dr Jasbir Kaur, Principal, College of Nursing, welcomed the guests and also highlighted the theme of the week-long celebrations “safe staffing saves lives”. She stressed the need for adequate nursing staff to provide comprehensive care and healthy working environment.

Dr Daljit Singh, Principal, DMCH, observed that even though patients came to the hospitals for treatment, they went back homes happily only if they received quality nursing care. Mr Prem Gupta, secretary of the DMCH managing society, dwelt upon the need for quality nursing care in the fast-changing medical care.

Ms Kuldeep Kaur, a lecturer of the College of Nursing, outlined the profile of Florence Nightingle, founder of the profession of nursing, and her achievements. A play on the theme was depicted by students of B.Sc IV (Nursing).

The chief guest presented “Dumra noble trust award” to meritorious students and staff while Mr Satish Sanwalka, treasurer of the managing society, gave away “Savitri memorial scholarship” to GNM students. A monthly G.C. Dhawan scholarship for the best nursing staff for the month of April and May was given to Ms Inderjit Kaur and Mr Harjit Singh.

Among others present on the occasion were Dr Sandeep Puri, Medical Superintendent, DMCH, Ms Uma Aggarwal, Nursing Superintendent, DMCH, Ms G.K. Walia, Principal, GTB College of Nursing, and Ms Shavinder Kaur, Principal, Mata Saraswati School of Nursing.

Following are the recipients of awards and scholarships.

Dumra noble award : Ms Jasmine Kaur Chauhan (B.Sc Nursing I), Ms Manpreet Kaur (B.Sc Nursing II), Ms Tanveer Kaur (B.Sc Nursing III)

Savitri memorial scholarship-2006: GNM I — Ms Gundeep Kaur and Ms Sarabjeet Kaur; GNM II — Ms Malivi Gupta and Ms Gaganpreet Kaur; GNM III — Ms Kamalpreet Kaur Ms and Harmeet Kaur.

Punjab handball squad

The following boys have been selected to represent Punjab in the Sub-junior National Handball Championship to be held at Renukoot, Uttar Pradesh, according to Mr Balkar Singh Brar, honorary general secretary, Punjab Handball Association.

Onkar Singh, Manpreet Singh, Amrinderbeer Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Amandeep Singh, Jashandeep Moudgil, Sonikbir Singh, Tanwinder Singh, Puran Kumar, Kuldeep Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Rajiv Kumar, Rakesh Kumar, Sukhwinder Singh and Gurpreet Singh. Inderjit Singh Sandhu and Anil Kumar will accompany the team as coaches.

Jalandhar win final

Ludhiana, May 16
Vinod Minhas (3 for 4 runs) and Manpreet (52 runs) steered Jalandhar to a convincing eight wicket win over Amritsar in the final of the first Punjab State Inter-District Twenty Twenty Cricket Tournament played at the Punjab Agricultural University grounds here today.

Amritsar were bundled out for a paltry total of 77 runs in 16 overs. Only Hitesh was able to stand his ground contributing 34 runs. For Jalandhar, Punjab Ranji player, Vinod Minhas was the pick of bowlers, claiming three wickets conceding only four runs while Jitender matched him by grabbing three wickets for 26 runs.

Jalandhar achieved the target losing just two wickets in 10.2 overs. Their innings revolved around Manpreet Singh and Amarjit who scored 52 and 11 runs, respectively. — OSR
