First aid training

Ind-swift limited, a Chandigarh-based pharma company gave first aid training to representative of 104 government schools of the city under their corporate social responsibility CSR plan. This is the third phase of the swift health programme for schools. While in the first phase the company provided first aid kits to all 104 government schools, in the second phase doctors gave health tips to more than 20,000 schools.

The programme was inaugurated by Kamla Bains, DEO and Rajesh Minhas, Deputy DEO was the chief guest.

Delhi Area defeat Nagpur Area 7-0

The Delhi Area defeated the Nagpur Area 7-0 on the inaugural day of the Inter-Area Hockey Championship of Maintenance Command, Air Force, held at 3 Base Repair Depot, Air Force Station, here today.

Cpl Anupam Sharma opened the account for the Delhi Area team in the 6th minute and scored another field goad in the 18th minute of the game.

Maintaining the same dominating pressure, it was Cpl Mukesh Kumar who proved to be tough for the Nagpur squad and scored two goals in the 26th and 44th minute, giving lead to the Delhi team of 4-0.

The Nagpur team got couple of chances to reduce the margin but could not capitalise on it. JWO C.S. Narendra scored a field goal in the 38th minute and Flt-Lt Kushulappa despatched the ball during the 42nd and 54th minute.

Earlier, Air-Commodore R.K. Srivastava inaugurated the meet. The matches are being played on the league-cum-knockout basis.

Karatekas to participate in Nepal meet

The karatekas of the DAV Surajpur Karate Academy, affiliated with the District Panchkula Karate Association, will participate in the International Open Karate Tournament-2006.

The championship, in which players from Bangladesh, China, Bhutan, Burma, Sri Lanka are participating, is going to be held at Kathmandu, Nepal, from May 22 to 26.

The meet is being organised by the Nepal Karate Federation, which is affiliated with the Nepal Olympic Council.

The players are Prem Sharma, Saurabh Batish, Om Kumar, Navjot Singh, Hitesh Manocha, Piyush, Varun Sharma, Sarthak Garg, Satinder Singh, Vivek Arya, Himanshu Gautam, Chetan Gautam, Shivang Sharma, Mohit Singh, Prince Saini, Arvind and Gurjant Singh. The team coach is Sukhjeevan Sharma.

Saupins win league match

A brilliant batting performance by Sohnal (40 n.o.) helped Saupins School, Chandigarh, to win the league match against St Xavier's, Panchkula, by seven wickets in Under 14 Hot Weather Cricket Tournament at Satluj school grounds, Sector 4, here today.

Batted first St Xavier's set a target of 120 runs, which the put on in 20 overs at the cost of four wickets. A fine batting show put up by Sohnal and Ashish (29) of Saupins enabled their team to achieve the target in just 15.4 overs.

Brief score

St Xavier's: 120 for 4 in 20 overs (Amulya 25, Nabdeep 34, Anupam Saini 2 for 22).

Saupins School: 121 for 3 in 15.4 overs (Sohnal 40 n.o., Ashish 29, Sagar 2 for 20).

Anron Cycles beat GATES XI

Superb batting performance by Pardeep Singh (80 off 78) enabled Anron Cycles XI to defeat GATES XI by 48 runs in the 2nd Hot Weather Cup League Cricket Tournament at St Stephen’s School, Togan here today.

Brief score: Anron Cycles: 228 for 5 (Pardeep Singh 80, Amit Sharma 60, Tejwant Pahwa 45, Amit Mandholkar 3 for 37).

GATES XI: 180 for 8 (Amit Mandhokar 63, Sukhwinder 42, Ajay Kumar 35, Amit Sharma 3 for 40, Sohi Singh 2 for 27.

Hockey tourney from today

Chandigarh, May 16
A four-day Public Sector Hockey Tournament organised by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd, will kick off tomorrow at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42 here today.

Five teams including BPCL, BSNL, FCI, SSCL and ONGC will participate in the tournament. Many reputed national players will be seen in action during the tournament.

The inaugural match is scheduled to start at 5 p m at the stadium.

Stephen's carrom contest

The 9th St Stephen's carrom competition will start at St Stephen's School, Sector 45, here tomorrow at 9 am.

The tournament is being organised by St Stephen's School under the auspices of the Chandigarh Carrom Association. As many as 231 players, including 74 women, will participate in the competition.
