Train passengers looted; robbers held

Two of the three robbers, who looted some train passengers at gunpoint near Mansa last evening, have been arrested.

Land acquisition: farmers to block traffic

Eight farmers organisations, including the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan), BKU (Ekta-Sidhupur), Punjab Kisan Union, Jamhoori Kisan Sabha, All-India Kirti Kisan Sabha, Punjab Kisan Sabha and Kisan Sangharsh Committee, today held an important meeting and announced their agitation programme to compel the state government to scrap the notification, issued regarding acquisition of 376 acres for the Trident Group of Industries in Fatehgarh Chhanna, Sangherra and Dhaula villages near Barnala.

Three witnesses, who had been summoned to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on the request of the petitioner challenging the election of Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh from the Patiala Assembly constituency in the February 2002 elections, were examined at length by counsel for the petitioner.
