Bhattian murder case: police suspects several persons
Ludhiana, April 9
Fresh investigation into the case of murder of a woman allegedly by her husband in Bhattian village, suggests that he was not alone in the act. The police has reportedly found a number of clues, including some fingerprints, from the spot of the crime suggesting that more persons were present at the spot when the murder was committed.

Sarpanch indicted for fraud in pension disbursement
Mandi Ahmedgarh, April 9
The civil administration has indicted Sarpanch of Kalyan village in Sangrur district in a case related to fraud in the disbursement of pension and has recommended her dismissal.

3.75 lakh children administered polio drops
Ludhiana, April 9
Nearly 70 per cent (3.75 lakh) of the children in the age group of 0-5 from out of a total number of 5.39 lakh eligible children in the district were vaccinated against polio in the first round of the Pulse Polio campaign today.

Polio drops administered at 1,155 booths
Mandi Ahmedgarh, April 9
The district health authorities and the civil administration coordinated to supervise the immunisation programme to provide supplementary protection to the children against polio today. The authorities claimed to have administered anti-polio vaccine to more than 50 per cent of targeted children in the Sangrur district.

MMS scandal: probe points a finger at industrialists
Ludhiana, April 9
Police investigations into the sensational MMS scandal in which a girl of the Salem Tabri area was involved have suggested the involvement of some big industrialists of the city.

Summers have just started setting in but mango—the king of fruits— has already hit the city markets. Though these are not as delicious as these would be during the peak season, people are going bananas about them. The biggest takers are organisers of functions, who procure the fruit for serving the guests.

SBI strike adds to riot victims’ woes

The disbursement of compensation to victims of the 1984 riots, being made from Monday, has been put off for the time being due to the ongoing indefinite strike by the State Bank of India employees all over the country.

The Punjab National Bank Employees Union will participate in the strike by the State Bank of India Employees Union on the condition that similar facilities being demanded by the SBI employees be provided to the PNB employees also.

Test purity of Bt cotton seeds: Chahal
Ludhiana, April 9
Cashing on the great demand by farmers, some unscrupulous seed dealers have been cheating farmers by selling them either non-Bt seeds or adulterated Bt seeds. The government had given a green signal last year to the cultivation of Bt cotton in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan and farmers were eager for Bt cotton seeds since.

Waiver of farmers’ loan sought
Khanna, April 9
The government should come to the aid of farmers in Punjab and write off their debts as they have suffered losses due to an increase in the input costs, said Mr Avtar Singh Janjua, general secretary, RSP, Punjab, in a press note issued here on Thursday.

School owners’ plea to govt
Ludhiana, April 9
The Punjab Private Schools Welfare Association, Patiala, and the Association of Private Schools, Ludhiana, today condemned the state government for its “discriminatory policies” against private schools. Mr Surinder Singh Dhillon, president, Punjab Private Schools Welfare Association, demanded an Act to regulate education in the state.

Autumn camp concludes at Love Dale School

“Preserve Punjabi traditions”

Mr Jagdev Singh Jassowal, a former MLA and chairman of the Prof Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation, has asked the cultural organisations to preserve the rich Punjabi culture, traditions and folk music. It was unfortunate that under the influence of globalisation, the rich folk music was losing its identification.

The SGPC has fulfilled its promise to provide financial assistance to the Punjab cricket team (visually impaired), which will be touring Pakistan to take part in five one-day international matches there against Punjab XI of Pakistan at Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Shekhupura from April 16 to 25.
