Distressed families promised help
Jammu, March 30 The migrants from terrorism-hit areas of Jammu were beaten up by the police yesterday when they came here from Talwara in Reasi and offered to sell their children as they had no means to run the kitchen. As the incident put the government in bad light, Mr Azad invited these migrants to his residence and assured the government would provide succour to them till they were in a position to return to their homes from the migrants’ camp. He said misery of the Talwara migrants is yet another example of fear psychosis and hardships caused due to militancy. Mr Bhim Singh and Mr Balwant Singh Mankotia, members of the legislature, who have been raising voice for relief to them on a par with the Kashmiri migrants, accompanied them to the Chief Minister. The government had suddenly stopped providing relief two years ago to those who had migrated from the terrorism-hit areas of districts of Doda, Udhampur, Rajauri and Poonch in the Jammu division, while the Kashmiri migrants continued to get ration and other material. The government has constructed two-room flats for the Kashmiri migrants, those from the Jammu areas were living in huts in insanitary conditions. The Supreme Court had ordered the state government to treat all terrorism-related migrants on a par, but these directions were not being observed by the authorities. Meanwhile, state’s BJP chief, Nirmal Singh has described the selling of children by the migrants as unfortunate. The incident has exposed the state coalition government as far as the relief and rehabilitation of the migrants in the Jammu region was concerned. He said that while Mr Azad had raised the slogan of a prosperous state, the migrants were forced to sell and mortgage children for a living. He said it was perhaps for the first time in the history of democratic India that hundreds of families came out to sell and mortgage children. The BJP chief said that the healing-touch policy of the state government was aimed at benefiting only the terrorists who had killed innocent persons. Senior BJP leader and a former central minister, Chaman Lal Gupta has criticised the government for inhumane treatment being provided to these migrants. |
PDP election campaign from April 2
Srinagar, March 30 Sources in the PDP revealed that it had already decided about the candidature in the three constituencies. It would not be fielding any candidate against the Congress Chief Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, from Bhaderwah in Doda district. The PDP candidates, according to the sources, include Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari from Pattan, Mr Dilawar Mir from Rafiabad and Mr Javed Ahmad Beigh, nephew of the Deputy Chief Minister, from the Sangrama constituency. However, a section of the state Congress leaders is keen on contesting from at least two seats in Baramula district. The election would be a direct contest between the Congress-PDP alliance partners and the National Conference. This had been made clear by the Mufti here last week. “The relation has been a great experiment,” he said at a press conference, adding that “it is on firm footing.” The Bhaderwah seat fell vacant following the resignation of former Congress MLA and Power Minister, Mohammad Sharief Niaz, to pave way for the election of the Chief Minister, who took over on November 2. Two former MLAs, both belonging to the National Conference, Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari and Mr Dilawar Mir, resigned from the party and their respective constituencies of Pattan and Rafiabad last year to join the PDP. The Sangrama constituency fell vacant following the killing of the then Education Minister, Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone. |
