Hurriyat chief unhappy with Centre over
Srinagar, March 11 The Mirwaiz was addressing a Friday congregation at the Jamia Masjid here yesterday when the two-day Pugwash meeting to discuss the Kashmir issue began in Islamabad. Its former chairman, Mr Abdul Ghani Bhat, represents the moderate faction of the APHC. The faction has already entered into dialogue process with the Central Government over the past couple of years. JKLF chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik, who had separately met the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi on February 17 last, is also among those attending the Pugwash meeting. The Islamabad meet also assumes significance for being held close on the heels of roundtable meeting in Delhi, which, however, was not attended by any of the separatist parties. Those attending the Pugwash meeting include the leaders of mainstream political parties like the Congress, the PDP and the Opposition National Conference. They are Mr Omar Abdullah, president of the National Conference, Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari of the PDP, Abdul Ghani Vakil of the Congress and minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen of the Peoples Democratic Forum (PDF), a constituent of the coalition government. Mirwaiz Umar’s concern over the central government’s laxity over the dialogue process at this juncture is regarded as significant. He has also squarely blamed the ruling coalition partners, the Congress and the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir, for “representing Kashmir” at the Pugwash meeting. “Those advocating the idea of self rule should first join the ranks of (freedom) movement”, Mirwaiz said and blamed these leaders for genocide in Kashmir and thereby “claimed to be the representatives of Kashmiri people”. However, Geelani who described the conduct of such a meeting as “not so helpful,” has sharply reacted to the statement of the Pakistan president, wherein General Pervez Musharraf had opined that Kashmir was a bilateral issue. Meanwhile, the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) has appealed to the civil society of Pakistan and other countries to take cognisance of the “enforced or involuntary disappearances (EID)” in Jammu and Kashmir. |
Pak crackdown on ‘jehadis’ in Muzaffarabad
Jammu, March 11 At least eight top leaders of the United Jehad Council, including chairman Syed Salahuddin, have been arrested. The arrests came when council leaders staged a dharna in the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, protesting against General Pervez Musharraf’s policy on Kashmir. Since the activities of anti-Pervez elements in Baluchistan and Wazirastan had added to the troubles of the Pakistan President, he had ordered the crackdown. Reports reaching here indicated that General Musharraf had been under pressure from world leaders, especially US President George W. Bush, to dismantle terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Reports said some Indian agencies were involved in fuelling unrest and violence in the North-West Frontier Province, especially Baluchistan. General Musharraf’s crackdown on ‘jehadis’ in Muzaffarabad is seen as a part of his attempt to kill two birds with one stone. |
Srinagar, March 11 Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohammad Salim Malik was shot at from point-blank range by militants at Wanigam in the Kreeri area of Pattan around 3.20 pm. Malik, who was shot at twice, died on the spot. The police officer, who was posted in the Crime Branch in Srinagar district, was on his way home after attending to his farms in Tilagam. No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the killing. In another incident militants shot dead a civilian and wounded another while a security man was injured when a bullet came out accidentally from his service rifle in Jammu and Kashmir today, official sources said. Mohammad Yasin Mir and Mohammad Shafi, residents of Ladi village in the Pahalgam area of Anantnag district, were abducted by militants. While the bullet-riddled body of Mir was picked up this morning in the same area, Shafi escaped with gun shot wounds.
