Course on water management begins

Ludhiana, March 7
A five-day training programme on “Efficient water management for sustainable agriculture” was inaugurated by the Dean, Post-Graduate Studies, Dr Darshan Singh, at Punjab Agricultural University today.

Around 20 participants from state directorates of horticulture, agriculture and Department of Soil and Water Conservation are participating in the programme under the niche area of excellence-soil and water management in high-intensity cropping regions.

The participants will be exposed to farm management techniques, use of water saving and irrigation devices, watershed management, improving irrigation potential in poor quality soils and artificial recharge of ground water.

Dr Darshan Singh impressed upon the need for educating farmers about water management techniques since water was a scarce resource and the water table was declining in the central districts of the state.

He said switching over from rice-wheat cropping system to crops like maize, soybean, groundnut and vegetables, will improve the efficient use of water, given the fact that these crops required less water.

Resource persons from the Department of Soils and Department of Soil and Water Engineering were at hand to talk about different water management technologies. TNS
