MCM DAV organises farewell function

Chandigarh March 7
Students of MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, today held its annual farewell function 'lamhe'. Organised and coordinated by the Students' Council, students presented a colorful extravaganza of song and dance for the final year students. Samvadini of BA III, who brought laurels to the college in inter-college and university competition in music, sang a 'lok geet' on the occasion.

The Principal, Dr (Mrs) Puneet Bedi, wished success to the outgoing class and promised them help and support in the future. The president of the Students' Council, Ms Meenakshi Tiwari, thanked the institution.

The main attraction of the function was Miss MCM contest. As many as 24 girls participated in the event. The contest was a test of wit, beauty and intelligence. Munmun was chosen Miss MCM while Amia Mehta was the first runner up, Sonia was second runner up, Neha Iqbal was chosen as Miss Elegant while Iksha was chosen as the Lady of the Day.

Lecture on blood donation organised

A lecture on Blood donation was organised on the 7th day of the 10-day NSS camp of the Shivalik Institute of Education and Research, Mohali. Ms Sukrita D.P. Singh and Ms Kamna Sharma, senior members of the Blood Bank Society, Sector-37, Chandigarh, made a presentation addressing the many myths and fallacies associated with blood donation in order to motivate the youth to voluntarily donate blood. They also threw light on deadly diseases like "Thalassaemia" and HIV/AIDS.

They consented to donate blood at the blood donation camp to be organised on March 9, 2006.

Degrees conferred

As many as 636 students were conferred with degrees during the annual convocation of the Government College for Girls, Sector 42, here today. Prof S.S. Bari, Registrar, Panjab University was the chief guest on the occasion and delivered the convocation address.

Annual function

The annual function-cum-farewell party of the Psycho Society of Government College, Sector 46, was held yesterday. This function was organised by the students of BA II and BA I for their outgoing seniors. Mr Rajesh Kumar, Head of the Department of Psychology, welcomed the chief guest, Principal Dr A.N. Garg, who graced the function. Students of junior classes performed various activities, including dances, poems, jokes, skits, and quiz contest.

Ms Neelu Gupta and Mr Balakaran Singh of BA III were chosen as 'The Senior 2006' and Ms Rupinder Kaur was declared as 'Student of the Year 2006'. The chief guest, Dr A. N. Garg congratulated the winners and gave away the prizes.

Students meet Nek Chand

The junior wing of St. Xavier’s here had a gala time during their educational trip to Rock Garden in Chandigarh today. They were thrilled to meet and interact with Mr Nek Chand.

The students acquaint themselves with the layout of the garden and showed interest in the creative art by the great artist. The children returned with creative ideas to make best use of the waste.

Panache 2K6 from tomorrow

Mohali, March 7
A national-level techno-cultural festival, Panache 2K6, is being held by the Shaheed Udham Singh College of Engineering and Technology, Tangori, near here, from March 9.

The two-day festival will serve as a platform for students to display their hidden talents in various events. A large number of colleges affiliated to Punjab Technical University are likely to participate.

The inauguration ceremony will be performed by Mr J.B.Goyal, Secretary, Punjab Technical Education. The event will conclude with a cultural night in which singer Jasbir Jassi will give a live performance.

Annual day celebrated

Desh Bhagat Engineering College celebrated its annual day. Apart from sports and athletic competitions, the college honoured students who excelled in academics. This was disclosed by Dr Zora Singh, chairman.

The two-day celebrations started with sports, followed by Horizons—2005, a scintillating music-filled cultural evening. Five students were awarded cash prizes of Rs 1,100 to Rs 500. They are Ankit Gautam, Darpan, Parneet Kaur and Shilpa Joshi for excelling in B.Tech first-year university exams. Chandar Das Dubey and Madhu Sharma were awarded trophies for best athletes. Amanpreet Bhogal, Avikaran Singh, Harpreet Kaur, Navjot Kaur and Suman Thapar also won individual prizes for standing first in various sports events.

Punjab history conference from March 18

Patiala, March 7
The 38th session of the Punjab History Conference will be held from March 18 to 20 at Punjabi University, Patiala. The theme of the conference is 'Social Stratifications in Punjab: Politico-Cultural Manifestations'. The session will be divided into four sections, ancient, medieval, modern and Punjabi.

Prof K.M. Shrimali, Delhi University, Delhi, will be the general president of the conference. Prof K.T.S. Sarao of Delhi University, Prof S.M. Azizuddin Hussain of Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, Prof B.D. Yadav of Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, and Prof G.S. Dhillon of Panjab University, Chandigarh, will preside over the ancient, medieval, modern and Punjabi sections, respectively.

Prof Sita Ram Kohli memorial lecture will be delivered by Prof S. Bhattacharya of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The conference provides an opportunity to the researchers of Punjab history to share their findings and interpretations.

Students block Naraingarh bus

Panchkula, March 7
Over 100 students of Swami Devi Dyal Institute of Engineering and Technology today blocked the bus for Naraingarh for over one hour, at the Panchkula bus stand this morning.

Students were protesting against the inability of the Haryana Transport Department to run more buses on the Panchkula- Naraingarh highway. They alleged that lack of adequate transportation facility to their college in Shazadpur near Barwala, they had to walk long distance.

They claimed that though the college did provide for transportation, it was very expensive. "The college charges Rs 14,000 for bus service for a year, while we have to spend Rs 1400 a year if using the state transport bus. There are 500 students from Chandigarh, Panchkula and Kalka who commute to and fro from the college daily. The Transport Department can increase the frequency of buses," they said.

The protesting students blocked the bus moving out of the bus stand, and raised slogans against the roadways staff.

Later, the police was called and only after the roadways staff assured to increase the frequency of buses.

Lawyer jailed for faking SC order

Chandigarh, March 7
A local court today sentenced Amritsar-based lawyer Arun Madan to four years’ imprisonment for faking a stay order of the Supreme Court. The lawyer, who was today produced in the court, is already undergoing imprisonment in Patiala Jail.

Separate case had been registered against him after he was found guilty of faking the stay order of the apex court in a case of auction of property ordered by the Debt Recovery Tribunal.

The cases were registered by the CBI under Sections 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC after an inquiry conducted by the Registrar of the apex court revealed the truth.

Report filed

In the Burail Jail break case, which is being heard in a local court, the CFSL today filed its report before the court. The court had granted bail to Jagtar Singh Hawara, alleged chief of the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), in the case.

Front seeks probe into lawyer-militant links

The All-India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF) today took serious note of the public fight between a militant and human rights activists over the alleged distribution of foreign funds meant for “anti-national” activities.

The links of terrorists with some advocates and the source of funding meant for anti-national activities should be probed in a time-bound manner, Mr Rajesh Sharma, president of the local unit of the front, said here.

The Punjab Government must initiate a drive to arrest the wanted terrorists and release the list of the “police cats”, Mr Sharma added.

H.L. Sibal felicitated

The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association today felicitated senior advocate Hira Lal Sibal, who was recently conferred Padma Bhushan for his service to society.

Speaking on the occasion, Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Mr Justice D.K. Jain said Mr Sibal rightly deserved the recognition for his services in the legal field. He recalled his association with Mr Sibal when he was a young lawyer.

In his address, Mr Atul C. Lakhanpal, president, Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, said he was literally brought up hearing about the achievements of Mr Sibal.

Security officer

The High Court on Tuesday ordered the Chandigarh Police to immediately provide a personal security officer to human rights activist and advocate Navkiran Singh, who is counsel for the Lawyer for Human Rights International (LHRI) in the ongoing PIL relating to alleged land-grabbing and benami land transactions in the villages in Chandigarh's periphery.

Resuming the hearing on the application filed by Mr Navkiran Singh, in which he had referred to the alleged attack on him in the High Court complex some days back, which, he claimed, was at the behest of senior Punjab Police named in the PIL, the Bench of Chief Justice Mr Justice D.K. Jain and Mr Justice Surya Kant also gave two days' time to the UT Police to review the threat to Mr Navkiran Singh's life and submit it report by the next date.

It later adjourned the hearing to March 9.
