Prohibitory orders
: In view of the ensuing annual examinations of matric and senior secondary classes, the District Magistrate on Wednesday banned the gathering of four or more persons within 200 metres of examinations centres. In a press note issued here, Mr Kirandeep Singh Bhullar, District Magistrate, said the ban had been imposed to maintain peace and law and order situation in the area. The ban would remain in force till the end of the examinations.

Rape accused held
: Gurdial Singh, a rape accused, has been arrested by the Dera Baba Nanak police, police sources said. As per the victim’s complaint belonging to Jodian Kalan village, Bhagwant Singh, alias Sukha, had raped her while she was alone and watching television in her room after he crossed over the wall and entered her house.

Courier firm man arrested: The local police has arrested one person working in a courier company for stealing some articles by illegally opening a parcel. The other accused managed to run away. Ajit Singh of Mohalla Daula Nangal lodged a complaint with the police that his daughter living in the USA had sent a parcel through courier but after receiving it was found that a set of pearls and other material were missing from it. Ram Kumar has been arrested. He, in connivance with Rajeev Sarai, Manager of Feedex International Courier, had stolen the articles from the percel.

Centre opened
: A CAD technology training company, CADD, opened its centre in the city on Thursday. It was inaugurated by Mr Simranjit Singh Mann. He said  the advanced courses taught by CADD centre would improve the engineering skills which will ultimately help in improving the economy of the region.

Recruitment week : The Training and Placement Cell of the Punjab Institute of Management and Technology (PIMT), Mandi Gobindgarh, organised a campus recruitment week for the final year students of MBA and MCA. Some national and regional level companies participated. Around 38  companies had shown interest.

Workshop: A workshop on intellectual property rights (IPR) will be organised at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College in collaboration with the Waterfall Institute of Technology Transfer here on Friday.

Students felicitated
: Students of Kirpal Sagar Academy, near Rahon in Nawanshahr, Prithivijit Singh and Simranjit Singh (both 17), who won gold medals in the recently concluded international tent pegging tournament organised at the Polo Club, Patiala, by the Equestrian Federation of India, New Delhi, were felicitated at a function organised at the academy on Wednesday. Biji Surinder Kaur, patron, Dr Karamjit Singh, chairman, Mr M.S. Bedi, Director, staff and students of the academy welcomed the budding equestrians.

Grant announced: Maharaj Brahmanand Bhuriwale Garib Dassi Girls College, Tapparian Khurd, organised the annual prize distribution function on Wednesday. Mr Parkash Singh, Parliamentary Secretary, was the chief guest and Mr H.S. Barsat, political advisor to the CM, presided. Mr Parkash Singh, while lauding the contribution of the Maharaj Brahmanand Bhuriwale Education Trust towards women’s education in the backward Kandi area in the state, announced a grant of Rs 1.51 lakh for the college library and promised to get 10 computers donated from an NRI for the computer lab.

CHANDIGARH

Rate revision: The Chandigarh Government Electrical Contractors Association has expressed differences with the Electrical Circle of the Union Territory over the rates prevalent in the city as compared to those in Punjab. A delegation of contractors has met the Chief Engineer and other officers several times in this regard. They had boycotted tenders for the past two months, a press note said.
