To tide over the persistent perennial financial constraints, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has sought an additional Rs 100 crore from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for its ongoing research projects in the university.

Controversy over naming shopping complex
Khanna, February 23
Naming a shopping complex became the bone of contention for the Khanna Improvement Trust after it came under protest from various Hindu organisations. After naming the earlier complexes as Guru Amar Dass market, Guru Teg Bahadur Market and Narotam Nagar, the chairman of the trust, Mr Ashok Jindal, got the idea to please Hindus and named the fourth complex as Bhagwan Shiv Shoping Complex.

The fact that Manu Sharma and other eight co-accused in the Jessica Lal murder case were let off has created a sense of resentment among all sections of the society. Most of the people have flayed the Delhi Sessions Court’s verdict of acquitting prime accused Manu, son of a Haryana minister Vinod Sharma, in the blatant murder of Jessica at a crowded South Delhi bar seven years ago.

Mann writes to SGPC chief

Mr Simranjit Singh Mann, president of the Akali Dal (Amritsar), has opposed any fresh construction in the Harmander Sahib complex and has suggested that the SGPC acquire another 100 acres for the additional infrastructure needs, including administrative blocks, staff quarters, parking lot, lodging facility for pilgrims and museums and educational institutions.

Activists of five farmers’ organisations — the All-India Kirti Kisan Sabha, the Jamhoori Kisan Sabha, the Punjab Kisan Sabha, the Bharti Kisan Union Ekta and the Khetibari Vikas Front — staged a dharna in front of the Mini-Secretariat here today to protest against the import of wheat and inadequate power supply.

Nickel worth Rs 4.5 lakh stolen
Ludhiana, February 23
In yet another incident of nickel theft in the city, a gang of 10 to 12 persons stole nickel worth Rs 4.5 lakh, besides Rs 50,000 from Jain Manufacturing unit in the Division No. 6 police station area around 2 am today.

Six crop varieties okayed
Ludhiana, February 23
The Punjab State Variety Approval Committee today approved and recommended for release four Bt cotton hybrids, one maize and one bajra hybrid varieties for cultivation in the state.

More land to be brought under wheat cultivation
Ludhiana, February 23
The Punjab State Seed Certification Authority will certify 93,302 quintals of paddy seed during the forthcoming kharif season. According to officials, during rabi season there will be an increase of about 1,900 hectares under wheat as compared to last season. For kharif, the authority certified 94,445 quintals of seed and out of which 90,275 quintals was of paddy.

Electron microscope at PAU

An electron microscope, first of its kind in the north has been installed at College of Agriculture, Punjab agriculture University (PAU). This latest state-of-the-art Rs 3.5 crore Electron Cryoultramicrotomy Microscope has been purchased out of funds made available by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

No 4 Punjab Air Sqn NCC conducted ‘B’ and ‘C’ certificate examinations for the second and third year senior division cadets at Arya College here today. More than 70 NCC Air Wing cadets, including 25 girl cadets, from different colleges took the exam.

Sessions Judge puts off interviews
Ludhiana, February 23
Following the receipt of more than 10,000 applications for 33 posts of clerks, steno-typists, orderly, peons and chowkidars in the District Courts here, the District and Sessions Judge, Mr Harbans Lal, has indefinitely postponed the test and interviews scheduled for March 3.

Exhibition of Tamil Nadu handicrafts begins
Ludhiana, February 23
The 10-day exhibition of craft items organised by the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited began at the Nehru Sidhant Kendra here today. The items included bronze, brass, stone, sandalwood and rosewood carvings, lamps, sculptures, wall brackets, door handles, tableware and lamp shades.

5.39 lakh children to get polio drops on Feb 26
Ludhiana, February 23
The stage is set for the third round of the mop up pulse polio campaign here on February 26. More than 5.39 lakh children from 0-5 years of age would be immunised and some 2,100 polio booths would be put up in the city and rural areas of the district for this purpose. In order to ensure a complete coverage of eligible children, teams of volunteers would go from house to house on February 27 and 28.

UK volunteers add colour to walls at CMCH

Fifteen volunteers from central London have given a reason to the children visiting the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here to be cheerful. The 12 women and three men from Amersham Free Church in the UK have painted and redecorated the paediatrics OPD walls with cartoons during their 14-day visit.
