Jain board to set up educational institutes

Ludhiana, February 5
Mr Kashmiri Lal Jain, president, Mr Sikander Lal Jain, Gen. Secretary and other eminent members of Shri Atma Nand Jain Education Board have announced the setting up of two educational institutions and a prayer-cum-meditation hall at the seven acre piece of land at Hussainpura, opposite Amaltas Hotel on Ludhiana-Jalandhar G T Road, here.

Giving details about the project, Mr Jain said that Atam Vallabh Jain Institute of Management and Technical Studies was being set up to produce BBAs and MBAs to speed up and regularize the industrial growth of the town. “Although Ludhiana is the industrial hub of the state , it has been felt that the town lacks professionalism especially in small-scale and middle-level industries. Besides, the MCAs produced by the institute will help promote the information and technology and fast-growing computer industries”, he said.

The Jain Gurukul School will lay emphasis on character formation of students. It will try to revive moral values based on the fundamentals of jain religion along with the teaching of modern sciences and humanities. A big Vallabh prayer-cum-meditation hall will be constructed to fulfill the spiritual needs of the community in a serene, peaceful and stress-free environment.

The ‘bhumi khanan’ (earth-digging) ceremony will be performed by Mr Sharanjeet Singh Dhillon, member of Parliament at Hussainpura site here tomorrow.

GCW to host lecture series

Ludhiana, February 5
The Department of Commerce, Government College for Women, will host the Punjab Commerce and Management Association (PCMA) lecture series from February 8. The PCMA has started the serried in order to create awareness among students and the faculty about various contemporary issues in commerce and management.

Eminent columnist Col (Dr) P.K. Vasudeva will speak on the WTO and its impact on Indian economy. The lecture will focus on various challenges imposed by the WTO agreement on the various managerial aspects of Indian firms, including its impact on the education, agriculture, industry and services sector.

Prof (Ms) Gurpreet Kaur, Head Department of Commerce, GCW, will be the convener. According to her, Dr Prem Kumar, eminent management expert and Professor at University School of Management, Punjabi University regional campus, Talwandi Sabo, would address the students on the issues of personality development.

The lecture will be presided over by Ms Prabhjot Kaur, Principal of GCW. The college will be the third in the city to host the lecture series. Earlier, these lectures were hosted by the Government College for Boys and Arya College.

While narrating the usefulness of the series, Prof Ashwani Bhalla, Secretary of the association, said these types of lectures provided a forum to the students and the faculty to share their views with eminent experts from industry and academicians and it created better environment for industry-institute interface.

GK test in memory of Kalpana Chawla

“Youth for Nation” organised an Inter College GK Test in the memory of astronaut Kalpana Chawla recently. Prof Rajesh Marwaha, Head of Commerce Department, Kamla Lohtia Sanatan Dharam College and chairman “youth for nation”, while declaring the result said in this competition about 3,000 students from 18 colleges of Ludhiana participated. According to rules, first three positions in Ludhiana district were to be awarded cash prizes of Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs1,000, respectively.

Overall winners of Ludhiana district included Jaspreet Kaur of Guru Nanak Girls College I, Rahul Jain of Government College for Boys II, and Nishant Chodha of SD College III, respectively.

The college-wise winners were: Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town—Jaspreet Kaur I, Mahima Kalra II, Jaspreet Kaur III. SCD Government College for Boys—Rahul Jain I, Anmol Sharma and Ramanjeet II, and Sahil Agggarwal II.

Central Model High School organises annual function

Ludhiana, February 5
The 51st annual prize distribution function of Central Model High School held here today. Dr Harbans Lal, MLA, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab Government, was the chief guest while Mr Malkiat Singh Dakha, MLA, presided over the function.

The students presented a cultural programme comprising welcome song/dance, a skit, dances and choreography. Principal Inderjit Malhotra read out the annual report of the school.

The chief guest gave away prizes to the meritorious students of the school. Besides the parents of the students, the other dignitary, who attended the function were Mr B.K. Rampal, secretary, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, Dr Rajni Bala, first student of school, Ms Amrit Varsha Rampal, Notary Public and Councillor, and Mr Sushil Mathotra, member, Prime Minister Rojgar Yojna Task Force Committee, Ludhiana.

Seminar on ‘Financial Sector Reforms’ organised

The Commerce Department of the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan campus Model Town, Ludhiana organised a seminar on the topic “Financial Sector Reforms” yesterday. Ms Manju Chawla , Principal of the college, welcomed the chair person Dr S.K. Singla, Prof, Head Business and Management Department, Punjab Agricultural University and the resource persons Dr A.K. Vashisht and Dr Karamjit Singh from University Business School, Punjab University, Chandigarh.

Emerging issues and recent developments taking place in financial sectors in India were discussed. Dr Vashisht divided the banking scenario into four parts: Then pre-independence , pre-nationalization, post- nationalisation and post-liberalisation period.

Dr Karamjit Singh emphasised that this era was not facing the ‘problem of scarcity’ but the ‘problem of plenty’ and explained the various reforms.

Seminar on physics

Ludhiana, February 5
The Physics Association of SCD Government College here organised a seminar at the Sahir Auditorium yesterday. Physics teachers from various parts of the state such as Kapurthala, Firozepore, Hoshiarpur and Mahilpur participated in the seminar. Dr Manjit Singh, a senior scientist, presented his paper on laser studies.

Dr Manjit Singh explained the theoretical aspects of lasers and presented the wide-ranging applications of lasers in every walk of life and also in defence. Prof S.K. Chakravarthy, Professor and Chairman, Department of Applied Physics, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, was the other resource person. He presented his talk on demonstrations and displayed the experiments in physics. He gave a live demonstration of many basic principals of physics. Dr Chakravarthy outlined the need for experimentation to the students and teachers present there.

In the wake of over-thrust on theory due to entrance examinations, practical classes were being ignored at many places. Dr Chakravarthy explained the role of experimentation in the overall understanding of theoretical concepts. Principal Dr D.S. Gill was the chief guest on the occasion. The Principal appreciated the efforts of the physics department in giving wide exposure to students.

Prof H.S. Khosla of the Physics Association and Prof Surjit Singh, Head, Department of Physics, while thanking the participants and the resource persons, said the seminar hosted by the association with financial aid from the Dean, College Development Council, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the first of its kind in the recent history of the college. The seminar was the final event of the programme to celebrate International year of Physics after many lectures and a quiz in this session.

22 Indian projects get e-governance awards

Oracle has initiated the “Oracle Excellence in e-governance Awards” and has announced the 22 Indian e-government project as the winners. The awards were handed over by Mr Charles Philips, president, Oracle Corporation, at a function held yesterday in a city hotel.

The awards showcases IT projects that have significantly improved their communities through effective citizen services delivery and excelled at providing innovative solutions to raise the standards of good governance. The award winners were selected from e-governance projects from all over India. These projects were implemented by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), Department of Information Technology and the Government of India.

Dr N. Vijayaditya, Director-General, NIC and Mr Derek Williams, Executive Vice-President, Oracle Asia Pacific, announced the shortlisted projects and presented the awards to the winners at the ceremony. The 22 award-winning projects included rural e-seva project of the Andhra Pradesh Government.

DIMT celebrate Basant Panchmi

Students of MBA, M.Sc (IT), PGDCA, BCA and DCA of the Doraha institute of Management and Technology (MIMT) celebrated Basant Panchmi with fervours yesterday said Dr R.S Gupta, Director, DIMT, in a press note. They were dressed up in yellow clothes to celebrate the season. The campus was also decorated for the occasion.

The competition for flower arrangement, table decoration, kite making and kite flying were held. The kite flying competition was inaugurated by Mr Sukhpal Singh, chairman, DIMT by flying a kite. Ms Umal Kaur, Director, Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Doraha, Ms Jaspreet Kaur and Tapvir Singh, director (administration) Doraha Colege of Education, Mr Japvir Singh and Ms Supreet Kaur also graced the occasion. Book release

Dr S.P. Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, released Humanism in Indian English Fiction, compiled and edited by Dr T.S. Anand, Head Postgraduate Department of English of GGN Khalsa College, at an enclave of intellectuals, researchers, teachers and students of English literature here yesterday. Prof L.S. Bedi, Ms Sushminderjit Kaur and Ms Hargunjot Kaur were associates in the academic venture. The book published by M/s Creative Books, New Delhi, comprised select seminar papers presented at the UGC-sponsored national seminar on the same subject, organised by the college in March 2005.

The dignitaries were welcomed by the chief guest. Dr Anand highlighted the lead role played by the PG Department of English of the college. He said it was the third time that they had not only organised a national seminar but also published select papers of the seminar in book form. It was a unique achievement of the department.

Earlier in the day, Dr S.P. Singh inaugurated painting exhibition of Sardar I.S. Raja. all paintings reflected Sikh ethos, culture and history.
